It can only be understood in reverse. Chuck Berry was a blues man. But his blues was the foundation of rock which is why some call him the king of rock and roll (people that don't give that title to Elvis). So it is with Motor Head a rock band that influenced the next wave of music that would come to be known as Heavy Metal.

The First time I saw Motorhead live, they played "We Are The Roadcrew", the second & following times they didn't, the second time there was a feedback issue with Lemmy's Mic. Edit: From memory Lemmy initially started out as a Roadie (Roadcrew), so if nothing else he would know how to set things up for a band.

@jaythompson5102 , it was after, but I feel like that was more Heavy Metal inspiration rather than Speed/Thrash metal. It definitely has components, but Motörhead took it to the next level. No disrespect at all to Deep Purple. They were part of the "Unholy Trinity", that gave us Metal.

Lemmy was the lead singer, bassist, writer, band leader. He always said they didn't play metal, just rock and roll, but "we play it louder and faster than anyone else." Lemmy was quite legendary, a mythic figure in rock n roll, consuming vast amounts of jack daniels & speed that would kill ordinary humans. He said he remembered a time before rock and roll, saw the Beatles at the Cavern Club, was a roadie for Hendrix, was the singer on Hawkwind's only hit (Silver Machine), formed Motorhead and then was called the "godfather of speed and thrash metal". Check out the documentary on him. A quick couple of other songs to sample would be Killed By Death, Overkill, Orgasmatron, and 1916 (one of saddest and stereotype busting songs ever).

Motorhead always referred to themselves as a rock and roll band, but they were a starting point for thrash metal because they were so fast and extreme for their time. Teenaged Lars Ulrich, future drummer and founder of Metallica, was the president of the Motorhead fan club in America and even followed them on tour for a couple of months. They were a band that punks and metalheads could both agree on, at a time when you could get beaten up for walking into a club with the wrong hairstyle. The speed metal label is humorous because they were heavy amphetamine users and the word "motorhead" was slang for a speed freak. Motorhead is probably best known for vocalist/bassist Lemmy Kilmister. He was a wild character: a roadie for Jimmy Hendrix, roommate of the head of the Hell's Angels in England, attempted to teach Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols how to actually play bass, wrote highly successful songs for Ozzy Osbourne and other performers, and was so influential to Metallica that the band played as a Motorhead tribute band at his 50th birthday party. Every metal band that was around during his lifetime has a Lemmy story.

Excellent summary. Although, and I could be wrong, but I feel the hostility between punk rock and metal/hardrock fans was primarily a European thing, where the two genres were tightly associated with different socioeconomic classes. At least it seems to me Americans had a more lax attitude about it, even if they followed a similar pattern. A guy like Nikki Sixx was always about both and saw no reason for separation, and he was hardly alone. But you’re spot on about Motorhead uniting us all, on both sides of the pond, in feverish bliss. :)

Lead singer Lemmy was a big Janet Jackson fan and wanted to record a song with her. However, Sony prohibited him to do so. He intended to record a version of 'Black Cat' with Jackson, apparently he said "We can't always get what we want" .... you guys are knocking these reactions out of the park 😀

Lemmy was a fantastic lyricist. Try "1916", "God Was Never On Your Side", "One More F*cking Time" or "Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me". Or why not Ozzy Osbourne's "Mama I'm Coming Home" which he also wrote the lyrics for. They're all brilliant. My favorite Lemmy quote: "Just like there’s a fine line between just fishing and standing on the bank looking like an arsehole, the line is whether the fuck you know what you’re doing when you drink ’cos if you don’t know what you’re doing, you just become a terrible boring drunk. Whereas, if you know when to stop, you become an amazing, anecdotal man of the world. Which is better than being the guy having a shit in the bathtub."

Motörhead is one of the British bands that founded heavy metal rock (along with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden), and "Ace of Spades" is their most iconic song. Sadly, all three from this video have already passed away (RIP Lemmy, Eddie and Phil). By the way: The "ö" comes from German and is called a heavy metal umlaut. It is pronounced like the "u" in burn or the "ea" in learn. 🤘

Wow, taking on a heavy weight, are we? Woo-hoo, turn it up! As others have commented, I too am a hearing loss victim from a couple encounters with Motorhead, the first time was very loud but was opening for Ozzy Osbourne (when he still had Randy Rhodes on lead guitar) in a large arena and we were half way down the side so it was not really outrageous BUT the second time was in the old Agora Ballroom in W. Hartford CT, we were right to the left of Lemmy, against the stage, and as soon as he turned on his amps, we knew we were in for it. A sonic wave just engulfed the floor area, it was intense, scary and invigorating at the same time, us metal heads wanted to experience them in their prime and we got an hour and a half of energy that would not stop, his bass playing is unique, serving rhythm and lead purposes at the same time. I had ringing in my ears for 3 days before it subsided and was a little bit wounded from the experience but luckily still have most of my hearing. More Motorhead! Try The Chase is Better Than the Catch, another banger from Lemmy & Co. Gone but they will never be forgotten, someone is always head banging with them. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

Motorhead is the OG punk/metal band. They combined the British punk rock scene with the rock ‘n’ roll/metal movement that was taking place in the later 70s. So in a sense you can say Motörhead are the godfathers of thrash. Killed by death and Orgasmatron are two great Motörhead songs. You should check them out. I saw them in the early 80s at the Country Club in Reseda Ca. Lemmy was a heavy drinker and now has a statue at the Rainbow Bar and Grill in Hollywood. Met him there more than once

Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead use to always say "We are Motorhead and we play rock and roll"...... but yes speed metal IS a genre and this is classified as speed metal but it's also classified as NWOBHM or New Wave of British Heavy Metal. New Wave of British Heavy Metal often abbreviated as NWOBHM was a musical movement in the late 70s and early 80s.

Lemmy's bass playing is largely overlooked. But I have not heard another bass player that plays like him. He had more treble in his tone, a percussive sound, and played more like a rhythm guitarist than a typical bass player. I am not a musician. But that is how I interpret his playing style. They created a huge wall of sound with only 3 people on stage.

Your quite right Lemmy was a rhythm guitarist who played bass.

If you haven’t already, you should check out “Awakening” by Unleash the Archers. It’s probably the best studio recording video I’ve ever seen. The way it’s shot and edited you really get to see how the musicians play. Great reaction to Lemmy and the boys. Cheers from Texas 🤘🏻😎

Lemmy was a true legend, held in extremely high esteem among his peers, you should watch the eulogy given by Dave Grohl at his funeral, there was an excellent documentary made about him simply called Lemmy, it's a must see.

They’ve all passed on now and they blazed the trail for tons of bands that came along in the 80’s and 90’s. All the lyrics are gambling terms.
