Neil Peart (pronounced P-eert, ear with a P) tried to give you a history lesson on the drums with his solo's. From African Tribal, to Military, Marching Band, to Jazz and Rock and finishing with big band and swing. He really tried to show you that drums were musical as well. Various tones and intonations. His grip changes were so fast as well. From traditional to Matched and back were crazy. Then, various time signatures, independent limb movement, etc... was just amazing. His Xylophone bit was part of a whole written piece called "Pieces of Eight". He incorporated many of his various songs into his solos. seeing him live was truly incredible. I do not thing there will be another one like him. Always striving to be better, learn more and give 200% each performance even when sick or hurt. His writings are inspirational as well. Keep going down the rabbit hole. Listen to the lyrics as well. keep up the good work.

This performance was from 2005. If you want to see some great drumming from his earlier career watch Xanadu from the Exit Stage Left tour in 1981. In addition to the usual drums and cymbals percussion, he also uses xylophone, bell tree, triangles, wind chimes, tubular bells and Glock blocks to help create the setting/mood. Worth the watch.

Niel Peart was one of the three best drummers of all times according with drums magazines, nicknamed The Professor. He died in 2020 brain cancer. He also wrote the lyrics of Rush's songs. All the sound like brass instruments was triggert by pedals. For me is the Best and inmortal because he don't play drums like others he Made melodic with drums and percussion. RIP yo the Professor. Great reaction

Neil triggers the 'horn' sounds with foot pedals which is why they are perfectly in time. The Big Band music is started by Neil with another trigger.

Several of the tones are triggered with the cymbals, too.

The part of the drum solo -- at about mid point -- where he is playing his drums over a Waltz pattern -- is a little subtle. That is, he is playing polyrhythms. He's playing a different rhythm with his feet than he is with his hands. To the untrained ear, it may sound almost "sloppy" but it's not. It's actually extremely hard to do and he had to practice for years to perfect it. Neil is one of the best drummers of all time, yes. My he rest in Peace (passed away in 2020).

This is called a hybrid kit.....a mixture of accoustic and electronic drums. The bell sound as you described it is actually a xylophone sound played on an electronic instrument which you change the sounds of and it's laid out like a keyboard.

Neil was a huge fan of Big Band music, and when he played at a Buddy Rich tribute concert, he didn't feel that he played very well, at least not as well as many of the top jazz drummers. So he decided to ask those drummers for someone who could help him develop a better feel for the music. Already acknowledged as one of the best Rock & Roll drummers in history, Neil decided to begin taking lessons again, and he eventually changed his playing style. Neil never stopped learning throughout his musical career and the reason he wanted to retire when Rush did after 40 years on the road is because he didn't feel that physically he was able to perform his best and continue to improve. Unfortunately, he died early in 2020 from brain cancer, but I'm so glad that he didn't tour during those 4 years, to be able to spend his life with his family, before the cancer.

When you have the chance, check out the rythm devils: a dou of drummers in the band called the Grateful Dead. Their hard chops are no where on Peart's level - no one is. But they helped create many sounds currently used by different artists. And, with the Dead there was always a whole section carved out for them to branch out into their sessions with improvisation, called drums.

I’ll give you another drum solo, by Jonathan Mover, from Joe Satriani’s Time Machine Live album. Do yourself a favor, just start on track 10, Rubina. Then the next four tracks are one continuous recording from a 1998 show in San Diego. Circles, Drum Solo, Lords of Karma, and ending with an amazing performance of Echo.

You seriuosly need to watch Rush - Xanadu exit stage left live dude it will show you the full array of this bands capabilities. Geddy Lee can sing play bass and pkay synthesized pedals all at one time. Alex Lifeson on other songs can play guitar and pedals together and has done some keyboards and backing vocals as well. There is no other band like these 3 on the planet or through history I guarantee it. God tezt his sole Neil you are so missed RIP, been a Rush fan since their first album seen them 7 times starting in 1975 I still have all of the concert tickets to them and for that matter every concert I have ever been to which is a lot.✌🔥🎹🎵🎸
