Imagine being considered one of the top 3 drummers of all time in almost every discussion yet you go and take drum lessons from a premier Jazz drummer for a year to improve your skills.

What a lot of people don't realize is that after almost 20 yrs of playing rock he took lessons and studied under Freddie Gruber to play Jazz and Swing. RIP Neil you're truly missed.

The Professor always made his drum solos, far more than just a drum solo.

He was and still is the drummer of drummers. A One Man Drumline. He's been one of my most fave drummers since I was a kid. I was only a 9 year old girl when I picked up the sticks for the first time and taught myself to play. Today I'm a 54 year old lady who plays percussions from time to time in my church choir. Thank you Neil for being one of my inspirations since my childhood and RIP Neil.

Jayy, as a bass player myself, it warmed my heart to hear you acknowledge how important the bass and drums are to ANY band. Especially so if there’s only 3 pieces. To be real. The main reason why a band will have a drum solo, is so that the other members of the band can catch a break. Neil’s solo here alone would have been worth the price of admission! Jayy, you probably noticed that Neil wasn’t playing your typical drum kit. I’ve heard some give the opinion that he didn’t need ALL of that. But it all added to (and enhanced) the bands overall live sound. RIP Neil. And thanks so much!

Rush is a band that has been ahead of everything and everyone in music and life. Down the Rabbit hole you went. R.I.P Neil.

Being a drummer I totally appreciate your comment about drummers being ignored. Neil was a god to most drummers. He was a total package. He was the best. RIP Neil.

Neil grew up from the big band Jazz era, like Buddy Rich. He's traveled the world and picked up a lot different cultures of drumming. His older set has evolved through the years before the synthesized drum pads he used gongs, triangles, cow bells, xylophone, chimes, if you hit it he'd make it sing 😉 the earlier comment tells you how he would separate his feet and arms to different cadence. What he didn't tell you was that he relearned how to play different styles of drumming. That's why we call him the Professor.

The music they added was samples of horn stabs actually triggered by Neil hitting the proper piece of his electric kit so it actually was played live by him as you heard it.

Bass and drums set the foundation of music. set up well they allow the rest of the band the freedom to play. Neil was a beast.

And Neil wrote close to 95% of the lyrics for Rush. And yeah to echo what someone else said, this is one of the only bands where Alex, the guitarist, is the most underrated of the three of them. All masters of their craft. Neil was the GOAT for sure and I will argue that both Geddy and Alex are, as well. To see them play live will always be some of my most happiest moments.

Neil peart wasn't just an amazing drummer he was also one of the all time great lyricists, Neil passed away from brain cancer January 2020. Neal was the primary lyricist for Rush. Very humble and soft spoken. He was an avid biker. He often rode his bike between gigs. He will be sorely missed.

He came out of the womb drumming😀😀😀. What a great reaction. You’re right a lot of people do sleep on the drummer and bass player. Not when it comes to rush however. I’m a drummer and was inspired by Neil. I went to a lot of concerts and when there’s a drum solo, a lot of people would go to the bathroom and check out. With rush, the drum solo was the highlight of the show! He was the greatest rock percussionist in the world, and he is missed for sure. RIP Neil!

Believe me when I tell you, For me to see Neil do this live for over 35 years as a fan was absolutely the price of admission just to see Rush. To see Neil do what he did over many tours up close was just absolutely fascinating to witness.

Niel Peart on drums is known as the "The Professor". Because great drummer learn from him. Lol The entire group is fantastic. All 3 of them. Getty on vocals, bass guitar and keyboards. Kicks ass on all 3. The lead guitarist is Alex. An incredible guitarist. So many great solos and little fills while having a unique sounding rhythm.

Check out the live version of a song named “Leave That Thing Alone”. Bass guitar and drums are ridiculous…

My only regret is that from 1979 to 2015 is that I only got to see them 38 times live... I know that there are fans that have seen them many many times more times than that. And they never ever let us down.

Neil's drum solos were not only amazing in themselves but were also an introduction to many different styles of percussion. The nickname "professor" was well earned. My reaction when I saw him perform live was the same as yours: "How does he DO that?".

If he's not your favourite drummer, he's your favourite drummer's favourite drummer! He was in the band called Rush, and he wrote the majority of the lyrics for them. The band itself is three piece, so there was only Neil Peart (the drummer himself), there was also Alex Lifeson, who was the guitarist and backup vocals, and sometimes played the Taurus pedals, and Geddy Lee, the lead singer, bassist, and also keyboardist, and also played the Taurus pedals, sometimes almost the same time. These guys were highly skilled and highly crafted on what they did. Not sure if you have listened to their songs already, but if you haven't, welcome to the world of Rush! They are rock pioneers, and inspired so many. Sadly, Neil left us back in January 2020, but has totally left a legacy for everybody to look back to. Rest in peace, Neil.

The talent to play EVRYTHING in front of him and it not all being in front of him and being able to reach and play and keep rythym, UNTOUCHED talent this man had.

The section where Neil is playing xylophone is from a Modern Drummer instructional record he did in 1985 called "Pieces of Eight". It's a total percussion-oriented composition. I still have it. It still amazes me. And it's on KZfaq, too!

I have said this before. Really proves that Neil Peart's drum solo's were actual musical scores and not just showing off. Glad I got to see him (and the rest of Rush) live a few times before his passing. The Xylophone part was from his complete song called "Pieces of Eight" that he wrote and published back in 1987. He did show you a history of the various genres of drumming from Marching Band, Drumline, to swing big band. He also wrote majority of the lyrics that were so deep, moving and profound. The drummer in the black and white footage was one of Neil Peart's idols, his name was Buddy Rich and he too was an absolutely incredible jazz drummer in his own right..... Extra info: that percussionist you just witnessed not only wrote the music for his band Rush, he also wrote all the lyrics on every album they ever recorded...he died from brain cancer not 2 yrs ago, and the music scene is not the same without him...

Not only was he the percussionist for Rush (I use percussionist since he was beyond just the drummer), after the first album he was the principal song writer for the band as well.

Neil Peart is a drum legend, not to mention an icon in my opinion.

Oh Jayy, now you are touching greatness. When I was in high school in the 1970s the argument was between John Bonham of Led Zeppelin; Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Bill Bruford of Yes or Keirh Moon of The Who as to the best drummer of all time. I would have added Lenny White to the argument but in 1976 (my senor year of high schoo) none of my friends knew who he was. Then in March of 1976 I literally wandered into a concert at Gonzaga University (Spokane, Washington) where Rush was about to go on. I had never heard of Rush let alone heard their music. By the end of that show in 1976 I knew I had just heard the best drummer in the world. It would take most everybody else aout 40 yeats and over a dozen more albums to catch up, but it's nice to see that Neil is being recognized for the talent he brought to Rush. Not just behind a drum kit, by the way. "The Professor" as he is fondly remembered, also wrote 99.9% of the lyrics. And he wrote several books and even penned an article or two for drum magazines and even wrote something for a motoring magazine because of his love of motorcycles and fast European cars including the Ferrari 166MM Barchetta he made famous in the song "Red Barchetta" from the album Moving Pictures. *There's a hint there)

Over the years from 1975 to 2015 I saw his drum solos 32 times live.

Oh my gosh, as a drummer myself, growing up trying to play like Neil, I've felt like giving up SO many times!! Check out "Working Man " from their first live album, "All The World's A Stage!" He does his first live, recorded drum solo in that song! From 1976, and it will blow you away!!

Thanks gorgeous! Neill Peart is in a rare breed of drummers that elevate the drums to an instrument. There not only keeping time, there adding dimensions to the music. Not only is Neill in a class of about 5 drummers that play AND WRITES some of the best lyrics in Rock/prog! Like EVH, his skill transcends playing the drums and goes straight to expression. He doesn't play drums, he expresses his thoughts and emotions directly through his instrument. There are a handful of drummers that perform at this level.. but The Professor is at the head of the class.

That is passion backed by a fiddlestick ton of work. :)

If you get the chance, you really need to see their acceptance speeches to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's on You Tube and is quite special. Neil Peart's speech is intelligent and incisive. Geddy Lee's speech is quiet and humble sounding. Guitarist Alex Lifeson's is..........erm.........let's just say I thought it was the best and most unique speech in the history of ANY occasion! All three speeches totally reflect their personalities.
