One of the most acclaimed synth pop tracks of all time. This was created utilizing homemade synthesizers and an Oberheim DMX drum machine. They even had a scientist who helped them design a circuit that could make the sequencer and the drum machine talk to one another because that technology did not exist yet. It bridges the gap between 70s disco, 80s electronic music, house music and techno. However when I was 18, 19, 20 years old, dancing to this at the clubs, I had no idea of what any of that meant other than this was my Jam!!! ❤

One thing you should know is that this song was a huge feat of programming. Don't sleep on late 70's/80's synth bands. Depeche Mode, New Order, Gary Numan, etc. There are some songs that rival a lot of the current electronic music. You should check out the German group Kraftwerk. There were the first electronic group to ever hit the mainstream, and some people call them the inventors of Techno (Even though the genre of actual Techno music was invented in Detroit.). Many of the biggest names in Detroit Techno are heavily inspired by Kraftwerk.

The lead singer from Joy Division committed suicide in 1983 (check out their song 'Love will tear us apart'). Instead of breaking up, the other band members formed New Order and carried on writing music. This was a huge hit and the band helped fund a nightclub in Manchester, England called 'the Hacienda'. The iconic nightclub helped spawn many different bands and acts including Happy Mondays, 808 state and The Stone Roses. All huge UK bands, many of them groundbreaking. A young glass collector at this nightclub took inspiration and formed a band with his brother. The young man was called Noel Gallagher and he formed Oasis. There is a little known independent film which tells the story of Joy Division and the Hacienda nightclub and its record label. It is called 24 hour party people. This could be a massive rabbit hole for you if you wish to explore some real gritty UK bands of the late 80's and in to the 90s. Enjoy.

Have a listen to Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Joy Division morphed into New Order after the singer killed himself. This was meant to be the best selling single of all time, i don't think it made them any money though due to the cost of the original 12inch sleeve that looked like a early computer floppy disk. The bassist was Peter Hook who gave that distinctive sound. New Order was originally a band called Joy Division, that change happened after Joy Divisions singer Ian Curtis took his own life. So somewhat spooky story about this song and me, just for the funzies. I like to play around with magick and occult stuff (kinda how some people ghost hunt as a hobby). Well i did a ritual once to essentially create my own demon to work with. After about a week, i decided the safest thing was to do the ritual to destroy it. On the day i decided i was gonna do this, i got in my car to go to work (middle of the night as i worled night shift) and this some came on, start to finish. It was the most out of place thing, as every other song that night was like modern pop-rock. It was the most surreal, christine-like experience I've ever had. It was like the thing was trying to guilt me, and tbh it kinda worked.

years ago I read about this was about the WWII in a scenario like "Operation Overlord" (Normandy). In that context a lot of the lines in the song makes more sense. And yeah, there are real drums because New Order is the band formed after Ian Curtis (Joy Division) cometed suicide: guitar, bass, drums and synths. This is the best selling 12" single in history but they almost lose money because the cover was real expensive: it was a black sleeve with perforations on it as it was a floppy disk and a silver inner sleeve. The cover has no band name or title on it, only a couple of stripes with a colour code. Bernard Sumner (guitarist, singer and lead composer) buy the pieces to build his own synthesizer! Electronica was a brat! More trivia: the classical kick drum is inspired by Donna Summer's "Our Love": the voices like a choir is from "Uranium" by Kraftwerk: the bass lines are from Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for "For A Few Dollars More": took things from "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester and "Dirty Talk" by Klein + M.B.O.

BTW this was a double sided single: Blue Monday / The Beach, wich basically was quite the same, but instrumental.

Two bands from the same group: Bauhaus. Neither one can compete with Bauhaus. Peter Murphy is the missing ingredient. I have been lucky enough to see Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets and Peter Murphy live in concert. I am huge fans of all. But Bauhaus and Peter Murphy solo were epic compared to the Daniel Ash/Kevin Haskins spin offs. I might be a bit biased because Peter Murphy has the most amazing cheekbones ever given to a man (and that is my kryptonite) but I still stand behind what my ears/brain hear 😊

You mentioned at the beginning of the song violins, it was actually a sample of monks chanting; amazing! There is a KZfaq channel, Produce Like a Pro, that breaks down the recording of this song. Check out: Songs That Changed Music: New Order- Blue Monday. It's fascinating. New Order ruled the dance floor in the alternative music dance clubs in the 80's. Other must hears to check out: Thieves Like Us, Bizarre Love Triangle (extended mix), True Faith (extended mix), Touched By the Hand of God (extended mix), Subculture (extended mix), Regret (Fire Island Mix), Perfect Kiss (extended Mix), Shellshock (extended mix)... I can go on and on. Their dance/extended mixes are incredible, sonically jaw dropping!

This song and a friend introduced me to a synth/metal/grunge (I think) band from the 90's that covered this called Orgy...definitely check out this song, Opticon, Fiction, Dissention, or Eva...Vapor Transmission was the name of their best selling album IIRC...it's very sci-fi/cyberpunk stuff...

Gen X music is the best. This song is a challenge to dance or dance roller skate too. Fast, half beats and body isolation moves. Very intense. Song brings back memories

I was a cheerleader when this song came out. We had an awesome routine, when the music goes Boom 5x (1:43) the last crash was a toss to a flip. Wish I had a video of it, but that was 40 years ago.

Their song that was about drug addiction was called "Morning Sun". I definitely would love to see your reaction to the video. I won't say why so I don't spoil it, but it is definitely something to see.
