Skullz reacts to Evolution of Michael Jackson by Pentatonix for the first time
Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, currently consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music.[2][3] When Sony's Epic Records dropped the group after The Sing-Off, the group formed its KZfaq channel, distributing its music through Madison Gate Records, a label owned by Sony Pictures.[4][5][6] Their KZfaq channel currently has over 19 million subscribers and 5.6 billion views. The group's video tribute to Daft Punk had received more than 358 million views as of November 20, 2021.[7][8][9]

All of the PTX "Evolution of..." videos are recorded live, in a single take, no cuts, no edits. The bass and percussion are front and center with the mics, and the Trio are set up behind them (often on a couch back, as they did in the early days). They do the entire set about 4 times, then decide which one they want to publish. To hear them do EoMJ in a live concert, check out the Popspring 2016 video. It includes 3 original songs and the EoMJ medley - and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the differences from this one, other than they do a little bit of choreography for the concert setting.

You can see an evolution of mic technology in these "recorded live" performances over the years. Some early videos like "Somebody That I Used to Know" and "Gangnam Style" seem to have only one mic. By this point (2015 I think) they can afford multiple mics, and I think the three in the back may have mics suspended over their heads. That allows their genius sound editor to do sound balancing and spatial positioning. By 2020 they have multiple mics with each mic chosen to best pick up each singer's voice; see "When the Party's Over" from the EP they recorded from their separate homes.

I knew you would appreciate this one. It's one of my favourites for all the reasons you mentioned. It's a superbly crafted live medley that allows us to track what each of them is doing at all times... and they are busy! When Kevin isn't providing furious beats, he's singing. Avi looks quiet down in the corner there, but he's actually filling in a full and imaginative bass section. And the trio are trading melodies and harmonies that are eerily like so many of the originals. Of course, when Mitch isn't channeling Freddy Mercury, it seems he can just as easily become MJ for a day. His musical prowess is astonishing. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Great reaction.

There are also booms overhead...condenser mics designed to pick broader frequencies from further away requiring less bandwidth. Yeah...Avi. He's a classically trained vocalist and opera singer. Plus...on some of their older originals you can absolutely tell he was the writer and the arranger. He has amazing control of his vocals and is in tune with the nuances of performance.

Besides the "Gold" by Kiiara cover, I'd also suggest (based on your appreciation of Avi and Mitch in this one) that you check out their Live recording of Silent Night, filmed in a medieval German church which has the most mind-blowing acoustics for the kind of singing they do. Avi and Mitch do most of the heavy lifting in that song, especially Avi, and it's the most beautiful rendition of Silent Night I've ever heard. And it really shows off Avi's opera training.

I am not a musician but i heard a bass player say that he sings bass like you would play a bass. I kinda know what that means but i think that’s why it sounds soooo good. Obviously his voice is utterly mind boggling but the slides and such make it feel like an instrument not just his voice.

Thanks for a great reaction--I enjoyed it! Yes, Kevin is an amazing singer that we all wish we heard more. When he first started with Pentatonix, he told them he could not sing at all. The group stopped at his room unexpected and found him singing by himself when nobody was suppose to be listening and liked what they heard. Avi and Kevin later shared an apartment and Avi gave Kevin some singing lessons and some encouragement in his self confidence so we gradually heard more and more singing from Kevin as time went on. Kevin Olusola has his own channel on You Tube, 'KO', that you would enjoy checking out starting with his covers of "Down" and "Sign Of The Times". A reaction to Kevin's solo work from your perspective as a musician would be wonderful! Kevin's talent is crazy!

It's not true your story you know? Avi and Kevin roomed together from the beginning. Avi had been studying to be either an opera singer or a choral director before the Sing Off so he taught Kevin. It is also is shown several times in videos.

@@gailseatonhumbert No need to troll. We all know that Kevin is very gifted but humble and Avi was well schooled and experienced singer and choral director (Kevin was brought in for his amazing beatboxing seen on the internet). Kevin is a world class cello and saxophone player but had no awards, scholarships, formal training, or background singing so he did not think of himself as a singer at the level of the others in the group. Avi helped Kevin with technique and confidence but Kevin's talent was already there (have heard this on several interviews). Only letting newer reactors and fans about an opportunity to see that Kevin is a gift and a lot more than an amazing beatboxer. Another great opportunity to check out Kevin is an old video of him playing saxophone at Carnegie Hall when he was still a teenager in high school (Kevin Olusola "From The Top: Live From Carnegie Hall-2005) Kevin's performance and interview afterward are amazing!

If you get a chance try to watch season 3 of the sing off. You probably already know but Mitch, Scott and Kirsty grew up singing together. Scott was a freshman at college when, their producer now, told Scott about the competition so Scott got a hold of the other two. They found out they needed 5 peeps(rule change that year). Found Avi through a friend and Kevin on YT. The five didn't all meet until the day before the audition. It's fascinating to go back and see just how good they were then and how excellent they've become. Gives you a good sense of how they became so tight. They've been credited with bringing accappella into mainstream. They're all so multi talented but they've kept their kind and sweet natures through everything.
@Gwennedd
@Gwennedd 2 жыл бұрын
Should we tell him about Superfruit? Scott and Mitch started a side project shortly after they began to enter mainstream. It's a fun blog with themselves and occasionally some friends that they often do songs with. Many of the songs are not acapella and some are really well produced, others are simply just fun with friends. Superfruit was closed down a few years ago because it was becoming too much to handle along with their busy schedules. It's fun to explore all their work there.

No rule change. The Sing Off was for acapella groups who always include a bass and a beatboxer. The bass is required quite literally to build the chords and the beatboxer in modern times to fill in the rest of the music. Just the same as you always have a bass player and drums in a rock. band.

Skullz, I am a brand new subscriber and I love your reaction style. Your shark shirt is pretty awesome too. Anyway, since you are a Michael Jackson fan, you need to check out a Thriller cover from a band called Dirty Loops featuring Cory Wong. The lead singer's voice is often compared to MJ's. They are amazingly talented musicians and probably the best Thriller cover you will ever see. If you were to do a reaction to it, I would appreciate it... A LOT!!!

Enjoying the reaction. But, what happened to your AKG headphones?? The right side is coming apart. I've had two pair of the 240s and neither one ever did that.

I used them a lot of the road for audio gigs. The plastic came apart in the bag. The headphones I used to use in the studio are broken now 😕
