Skullz reacts to Behomian Rhapsody by Pentatonix for the first time
Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, currently consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music.[2][3] When Sony's Epic Records dropped the group after The Sing-Off, the group formed its KZfaq channel, distributing its music through Madison Gate Records, a label owned by Sony Pictures.[4][5][6] Their KZfaq channel currently has over 19 million subscribers and 5.6 billion views. The group's video tribute to Daft Punk had received more than 358 million views as of November 20, 2021.[7][8][9]

Starry sky was, of course, homage for astrophycist Dr. Brian May. Four falling stars for the members of Queen. The story is that Brian May posted this to his social media with the single word "Enjoy."

The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC. Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy.

The megaphone was a prop; Mitch wasn't actually using it to produce the guitar solo. That was all Mitch's voice, so no, he was not under-used just because he didn't hit his highest notes.

Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. His PhD thesis a survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud" was published in 2007 and is a popular astronomy book of the same name. He started his research in 1970 and then stopped to run around the world in this rock band named Queen. Maybe you've heard of them maybe you haven't I had to Google them. That's sarcasm. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in the live performances. the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . The shot at the sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites. The part where Mitch is lying down on the couch and Kevin and Avi are walking beside it are to represent the pallbearers carrying Freddie's coffin . The shot at the end when they're looking up at the sky always puzzled me because there are four shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. They worked on this song for either five or six years to get it where it is right now. This is a link to a video titled a beginner's guide to Pentatonix youtu.be/lDxIfwfC This is a link to a live version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it was filmed off of somebody's phone. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZeAmM97rt6shIU.html

They are experts at serving the music and arrange with their egos in a drawer. Watch the making of Evergreen-their most recent Christmas album. Fascinating to watch them work through songs and try different takes to see what sounds best. Everyone in the group has a voice that’s respected and all input is welcome. I think you’d really enjoy it.

Totally agree. Each member of Pentatonix has enough talent to go solo and when they do they shine in their own magical ways. But as a group they are really in a class of their own at the top and a big part of that is the respect and awe they have for each other's talent. They all are hypers for eachother and know what it takes to get the job done while keeping a fun light hearted working environment.

That black screen was actual night time. They filmed almost all of it at night on a road. The couch was remote controlled and took a trip down the road as they sang on it. It was kinda dangerous! It did get Kevin a bit. It took them all night to complete the filming. The view of the stars and the comets were a nod to the 4 members of Queen and Dr Brian May, lead guitarist of the band who is an astrophysicist and actually has a comet named after him.

I really enjoyed your reaction--thanks! This was a difficult video for them to make as it was done overnight, on a road that was closed off, when it was bitter cold outside, on a moving couch that tipped over easily ( chasing a moving couch while trying to sing was even more of a challenge for Mitch and Kirstie as they wear very high heals). There is a Pentatonix making of Bohemian Rhapsody video that you would really enjoy watching. Pentatonix does an amazing cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" that I would love to see a reaction from you.

I just watched all of your PTX videos and am anxious for more. There are many aspects of different reactors that make their videos fun to watch, but I especially enjoy those who know what they're talking about, either musically or through production features which I appreciate but don't catch on my own. I have been a fan since their first performance on The Sing-Off in 2011. Please extend your coverage to their individual performances and to Mitch and Scott as Superfruit. My favorites of Superfriut are Defying Gravity, Frozen Medley, and Rise. I especially appreciate that Mitch's hysterical green facepaint in Defying Gravity becomes virtually unnoticeable about two seconds after he starts singing. He's just so magnetic that nothing else matters. The same with the blond wig in Frozen (rumored to have been filmed while the trio enjoyed some adult beverages). The trio were all active in musical theater growing up (together in Arlington, Texas), and it is clear from many of their performances here and elsewhere that Kirstie and Mitch, especially, could have had successful Broadway careers if PTX hadn't worked out. Kristie's role in Kinky Boots on Broadway proved that as well. One of my favorite Kirstin showcases is Seasons of Love from Rent. Oh, my gosh, you have so many hundreds of songs to enjoy! Welcome to the PTX family!

PTX wanted to stay true to Queen's original sound engineering that stretched the tape to it's near breaking point when they recorded the several layers during the operatic section. This also included the panning for which Queen was famous for. You can notice the panning in several sections of the song as it was in the origina!. As was noted Brian Mays was so impressed with PTX's cover he mentioned it on his website and linked to it,as well.

Very interesting commentary about this amazing performance. Everyone talks about the high range of Mitch's voice, how outstanding his belting is, and there is no arguing with that. There is, however, more to Mitch's vocals. The extreme control he has when he is singing piano and pianissimo defies description. He knows how to support the sound so well thst even his quiet notes are pure and clear. Th absolute mastery of the art of singing is never to be bettered at the very end if this amazing piece of music. As Mitch sings the final "Ev'ry where the wind blows" the others have the most sublime chord ptogression. Then comes the final resolve. Mitch hits "Blows" bang on for the chord, and slmost immediately the others resolve the chord is the most amazing way. Each moves to the final note ever so slightly off the timing if the others, Avi being the final resolve. Pay close attention, and you will hear the chord come to life a split second after Avi hits his note. The is Mitch at his best, taking his note up 1/64th of a tone. Not enough to hear, but enough to make the chord ring. If you sing quietly with the note, you will find yourself ever so slightly flat unless you are used to a capella close harmony.

@Skullz It took PTX FIVE YEARS to perfect this arrangement cuz they wanted to make it a tribute to the original, & actually A MEMBER FROM QUEEN SAW THEIR COVER REPOSTED THE LINK & TOLD EVERYONE TO ENJOY! So if that doesn’t say that they’ve done this ICONIC INCREDIBLE SONG justice I have no clue what would say it. In my opinion Mitch was the perfect person to do Freddy’s main parts cuz Mitch has a habit of basically embodying whatever singers part he’s doing. Avi (their bass man now replaced by Matt Sallee) did an incredible job with the bass notes & effects & it’s rare that he sings so that was a nice change to show off his voice some. Then Kevin MY GOSH KILLIN IT with the beatboxing & percussion sounds & being so locked in with Avi which is so important the two of them are actually known as MEAT & POTATOES & that nickname was given to them when they were on The Sing Off the show & winning it is how PTX got their start! Mitch Scott & Kristie actually grew up singing together then later added Kevin & Avi!! But I agree they absolutely delivered & when I saw this cover/music video for the first time I LOST MY MIND ESPECIALLY AT MITCH’S MIMICKING THE GUITAR SOLO INCREDIBLY WELL! Whatever they do they put 110% into cuz they always want it to be perfect & PTX never fails to deliver on their song covers & PTX also never picks a song they can’t do live so ABSOLUTELY CHECK OUT THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCE OF THIS IT IS MADNESS HOW GOOD IT IS! Hope I was able to give you some insight into what went into making this as good as PTX did! Love your reactions & your appreciation for a capella groups & how hard they have to work & one last fun fact these five come up with all their arrangements on their own no one does it for them! Love Jess from Toronto ♥️ another musician 🙂

I feel compelled to say "thank you" for your audio setup, as you are one of maybe three out of DOZENS of reactors I've seen in which I can hear the panning at your 1:34 mark, with "Little high" in the left and "Little low" in the right. The rest of them apparently have left something out of their settings so I hear one side, and just a tinny hint of the other. So ... kudos. And I love your clear pleasure in listening to this. Freddie wrote a masterpiece, and PTX did it full justice.

Not too many reactors have mentioned the fact that they are outside, on some street, at night, where it's very cold as you can see their breaths in the cold night air. Amazing. BTW, I've never understood heads or tails about this song and Queen's version either. I'll get flak for this but, I never liked that song, even though I do like some of their songs, until PTX did it. Now I have watched it several time, even though I still can't make heads or tails about it. Maybe some can explain about this song ... the Bohemian meaning, the Rhapsody meaning, the Aids meaning, the problem of going/not going, etc. but until then, I'll just take it as the best version out there, including Queen. Thanks for the reaction.

Far be it from me to say I know what was in Freddy Mercury's mind, but I've always taken the song to be an extended apology/confession to Freddie's Mom about his coming out as a homosexual. He "just killed a man" because he had, or suspected he had aids, which was at that time considered to be incurable. He was also facing up to his own, early death, and telling his Mama "I didn't mean to make you cry," even though he knows his choices will have led to his own, way too early death. I'm going to assume you weren't an adult in the 80's, so it might be hard to imagine the incredible fear and sadness at that time.

Great reaction. You highlight the important choices made in the production. The BTS on this is fascinating particularly the part of the couch which was deliberate because of how many of their early videos featured a couch in the arrangement. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h56lmq2frq3DfJ8.html For years they said in interviews they would not do this that "it was Queens thing" however Avi had already announced he was leaving. They did several songs between that announcement in May and his departure at the end of their tour September 3rd that they had discussed for years including John Lennon's Imagine. I highly recommend you react to that one as well.

If you would check out more of Avi’s music, I would really appreciate it. He’s at the moment on a highly successful tour of the US. From his album “Floating On A Dream”, I would suggest that you listen to some tracks that showcase both the versatility of his voice and his capabilities as a songwriter, “I’m Only Getting Started”, “When I’m A Fool”, “He Don’t Love You Right” and “Into The Blue”. Bro...your reaction are badass. It's nice to watch someone with music knowledge react to these cats. Technical note...the audio is about one second behind the video on our end.

I get blown away everytime I hear this one. Scott just put out a new song Mars, and you are really going to want to react to it. It gave me all the feels. They also announced their new Xmas Album is out. You have the best reactions and your face shows everything you feel

The megaphone is just a prop. Mitch can sound like an electric guitar without it.

In case someone hasn’t mentioned it already, there’s a ‘Making of’ video of this. Really worth a watch, it’s interesting to see how it was put together… and amusing to see who fell off the moving couch the most :D Great reaction and thoughts, as always

PRETTY Please with your favorite sprinkles react to 'THE PRAYER' Cover by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocellie cover. (Prepared to be blown away) Or, IMAGINE Beetles cover. (The same excessive pleas apply) This one also surprises. Hi, my name is ( ⬆️ ) and I'm a PTX Reaction Reactor addict... I really, really need, er... love to react to new PTX reactors reacting to PTX, getting brutally Mitch slapped, and crazy stunned by the 5 as a whole.

Just for fun: they did Bohemian Rhapsody as the last encore to their live show at Hollywood Bowl last week: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hcpdipxiprmudmw.html. It's a cellphone recording, but the sound is decent.
