Kathy here - Phil was the drummer for Genesis, then the lead singer left, and Phil took over. So, he is a drummer that can sing!! He can't play drums anymore due to physical strain over the years, but his son now plays the drums for him. Thanks for your reaction!

Great reaction! Phil Collins isn't a singer who plays drums; he's a drummer who sings. He was the drummer for the band Genesis. When the lead singer (Peter Gabriel) left, Collins took over that role though he didn't care to do that.

Not bad for a drummer who sings a bit! Phil joined Genesis in 1970 as their drummer. He did some backing vocals to the singer, Peter Gabriel, and also as the singer on 2 tracks up until 1976. Peter Gabriel left 1975 after the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour and the search for a new singer began. After MANY auditions for a new singer, the band decided that Phil would be the new Genesis singer. They released the 1976 album A Trick Of The Tail with Phil Collins on vocals and drums. For tours they hired an additional drummer, Bill Bruford and in 1977 they hired Chester Thompson who played on tours. He also played almost every Phil Collins solo tours. Phil also played in jazz fusion band Brand X from 1976 beside Genesis recording and touring. Phil Collins is one of only three artists that has sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and with a group. The other two is Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. Collins also produced and played drums on Frida's (from ABBA) soloalbum Something's Going On 1982 and produced and toured with Eric Clapton. Also played drums on some of Robert Plant's (led zeppelin) soloalbums. He had some acting skills, starred in one episode of Miami Vice and had the leading role in movie Buster. Some other apperances as well. A busy drummer who sings a bit! 👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥

That "effect" you hear on his voice is Brad Cole on the "Vocoder." He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Magical. The 'other' voice is from the keys as the keyboard player sings along with him for the effect. The whole concert is dope from Paris 2004 (Bercy Arena). Phil is a drummer first and a singer second if you can believe it. Check out Genesis in the 70s and 80s. Epic. His solo concerts are golden. Leland Sklar plays bass. He played bass with James Taylor and literally hundreds of the best recording ever made. Love how you understand how amazing this production is. The drums come up from below. This is a masterpiece, yes.

For me, it is a pleasure to see him back on the drums, if only for a few minutes. Phil Collins is ranked among the best drummers in the world. He drummed with Genesis from the late sixties into the seventies. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis to start his solo career, Phil took over singing and continued to make the band more famous than ever. The other drummer you saw tonight is Chester Thompson, who has been the drummer for Phil for many years. Phil is 57 in this performance. He is now 72. He must now walk with a cane and sit through performances due to a fall that injured his spine. Phil's son Nic is now his drummer. I suggest that you follow his career backwards, as you are familiar with his late single work rather than his early band work with Genesis.

He´s top ten drummer on the 70´s, sharing scene with Carl Palmer (ELP), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ian Paice ( Deep Purple), Biil Bruford (Yes) , Alan White ( Yes), among other awesome drummers of this golden period of music.

Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece. I think this is his best performance ever. The whole concert was epic. I saw him in Germany and I will never forget the moment when this song started. The whole crowd was waiting for this. He is one of the best drummers in the world. You can check out the beginning of the concert to see his drum skills. He started the show with an epic drum performance. The full concert is available on KZfaq kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbaqpb1els2RZ4k.html The effect on his voice is done by Brad Cole on the keybord with a vocorder (you can see him at 7:25) and the drum sounds at the beginning of the song are produced by a 40-year old Roland TR-808 drumcomputer.

I've been a drummer since I was 8 years old and was in rock bands until i was 52. Singing and playing drums takes a lot of core strength. With both your feet sometimes lifted up at the same time and you're bouncing on your drum stool it puts a lot of pressure on your abdomen which is where the power for your voice comes from. It's so sad that phil is in very poor health and can no longer play drums and has had to sing whilst sitting in a wheelchair. Talent at it's best. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
