First your eyes opened wide, followed quickly by your mouth. Normal reaction to this masterpiece. This was the type of music we were listening to in 1967. Gary Brooker was 22 in 67 when Procol Harum released this, and it has been an iconic hit ever since. At 61 in 2006, this performance is the finest you will ever hear. Gary's voice is so much better that as a twenty something back then. Then you add the orchestra and the choir to the mix, and it all came together perfectly. Loved your reaction.

He originally sang this in 1967 if I'm not mistaken and he has only gotten better over the years! Gary Brooker had the voice of an angel and he will be sadly missed!

Way back in late 1967, was 17 years old, minding my own business driving my 65' candy apple red Mustang when this came on the radio. I immediately made a U turn and drove to the nearest record store and purchased this album and 4 track tape,( yes 4 track). My favorite song of all time to this day.

We were so spoiled in the late 60s. Songs like this were coming out monthly. Well, maybe not THIS good, but the music was insane. Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Credence, Buffalo Springfield, The Hollys, Dylan, it seemed like it would never end… this will never happen again.

That "dude" is GARY BROOKER and he was/is the lead singer of the '60s group PROCOL HARUM. I was 20 years old in 1967 when this song first came out. For those of us who were young in 1967 this song became EXTREMELY special to us. THE ORGAN is WHAT MAKES this SONG, some female singer did a remake of it WITHOUT the organ, and it was AWFUL. THE ORGAN HAS to BE there NO MATTER WHAT! THis song gave me chills and made me weep the very first time I heard it, and still does every time I hear it, including today. Gary's voice is just as strong as it was in 1967, Here is a video of the group Procol Harum (that's the name of the BAND, NOT the singer ) with the original 1967 recording with Gary Brooker singing it just like he did in the video you just watched ....kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebCoo66dua-oYoU.html

There is a 3rd and 4th verse to the song and the band's name was named after a breed of cat. "In April 1967, Brooker began working as a singer-songwriter and formed Procol Harum with non-Paramounts Keith Reid (poet), Hammond organist Matthew Fisher, guitarist Ray Royer and bassist David Knights. Guy Stevens, their original manager, named the band after a Burmese cat, which had been bred by Eleonore Vogt-Chapman and belonged to Liz Coombes. The cat's "cat fancy" name was Procul Harun, Procul being the breeder's prefix."

Gary Brooker of the band Procol Harum wrote and first performed this song in 1967 with his six piece band. You can find this version on youtube. His voice is so much better now than it was back then. I had been reading online that the meaning of this song had to do with a sexual encounter gone awry but I disagree totally. Although some of the lines don't make sense to me, it is obvious that the guy is performing before an audience and he's higher than a kite. He's feeling sick and wants to quit but the crowd called out for more. "The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away" is the effects of whatever drug he has taken. "When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray." He's performing in a nightclub and drinks are served on a tray. I agree a lot of the song is mish-mash but Gary explained that. He said that he was high when he was writing it and some of the lines just fit the space he was trying to fill so he put it in. He's still a genius in my book. The music omg!!!
