He shook his head and said, " I know I couldn't, be careful OK?" He let me off with a "You have a nice day Miss." Those were woofers installed by my then audiophile sweetheart.

Actually... Some sources claim the song is derived from an 18th-century marching cadence about a flint-lock musket with a black painted stock; the "bam-ba-lam" lyric referring to the sound of the gunfire. In the British Army from the early 18th century the standard musket had a walnut stock, and was thus known (by at least 1785) as a 'Brown Bess'.[2]
@dna3930
@dna3930 4 жыл бұрын
It start out as a military cadence in 1700. Black Betty was the name of the gun, bam ba lam is the sound it makes. It then was used by slaves working in the field, next used by chain gang prisoners, then Leadbelly made it a Blues song, and of course Ram Jams version. I've heard the chain gang version.

Never heard this song before in my life. Liked it! I'll have to look up and see when it's from. Some of the chords sound like the 70's to me.

Used to give myself whiplash headbanging to this back in the day. Loving your reactions and have been binge watching your channel for a couple days now and have subscribed. Thanks for being so open and enthusiastic to broadening your musical horizons, it makes my soul sing and watching you air drumming puts a big smile on my face. Makes me want to go through my vinyl collection and pull out some suggestions myself...hang on... Ok, for starters, have a listen to Harvest by Neil Young - Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done, After the Goldrush just a couple of my personal favourites from that album. Thanks for being you, and getting me through. Peace. 🤘🏻

Lead Belly, a musician from the turn of the century who was a massive influence on many musicians in jazz and blues, including Kurt Cobain, sang this in one performance. Th song is about a gun used by soldiers in the civil war, called Black Betty. The manufacturers made a second version that was notoriously faulty, misfiring and occasionally blowing up in a soldier’s face. That’s why black betty’s child “went wild” in the lyrics.

I can't believe I missed this when I was scrolling through your videos! I even commented about a month ago, saying you should do this one. It was posted on my birthday, right after lockdown. It was not a "happy birthday" this would have made it a hell of a lot better. Thank you for giving me something to smile about today. You're good boys, and I hope that you are sharing this experience with your friends and family outside of KZfaq. And expanding your everyday listening.

Drummer Pete Charles killed it. RIP Pete. (2001) This song reminds me of my dad, he loved this song. It has a very interesting history too, it started out as a cadence worksong by African-Americans in the 1800s, the 1st recording was in 1933 by a convict, James 'Ironhead' Baker from the Central State Farm in Sugarland, Texas. It was later recorded by Lead Belly as a trio of songs on an album called Negro Sinful Songs. The Ram Jam version caused the NAACP and Congress of Racial Equality to call for a boycott of the band.

Melissa Lucio The reason it was boycotted is because Black Betty was a term for moonshine made by slaves and they thought it made blacks out to be lazy alcoholics and demeaning to their culture. I should've added that part to the original comment.

You guys are awesome! Black Betty takes me back to my junior high school days. My friend and I would be at her house waiting for her mom to come home from working in the corner store a block away. When we would see her coming, we would put Black Betty on and shake the house. Oh yeah, her name was Betty.
