She is an independent artist who has rejected many recording contracts from the big labels, including Sony recently. We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on KZfaq. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on KZfaq and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late 2018. My fave singer. Best technical singer I have ever seen. Her belting technique is unmatched. "Arirang alone" is a good next song with violins. "Everyone" is a technical masterpiece with lots of upper register that makes you wonder how she doesn't tire out. "Lean on me" is her just showing off with a killer arrangement. Michael Bolton was in the audience and liked her so much he invited het to perform with him in concert in Korea. Sony had reached out to her and offered her a contract..... and she tolld them no. So Hyang is one of the greatest female singers on the planet today, based on the critique/opinion of knowledgeable, experienced vocal teachers like Roberto Delli Carri (master teacher of vocal coaches), John Henny (John Henny Vocal Studio and music publisher), Elizabeth Zharoff (Charismatic Voice), Recao Imediata, and many others. She is the queen of the mixed voice, vowel modification, belting, etc. She is virtually flawless technically while singing with emotion based on her gospel/Christian background and desire to comfort others (Todd Sauve in the comments below always has a great summary). Michael Bolton called her performance of "Lean on Me" a "virtuoso" and offered her to tour with him- which she delclined since it was inconsistent with her beliefs that singing is not to make money or fame, but to sing for God and to comfort others She also has a "Star" rating along with Whitney, Mariah, and Celine. Her song “everyone”is one of the greatest vocal performances in the history of vocal performances. It’s like a marathon, and she kills it.

Yup! As soon as you hear So Hyang start to sing you know you have tapped into something you have never heard before! People looking for their jaws on the floor is probably the most common after effect, followed closely by tears (from us guys, too!) and then just plain blank, dumb stares. Then you have to hear the song again and again and again ... finally after all of this your brain starts working once more and you begin processing what you have just heard. It happens every time with everyone. This tiny South Korean Gospel singer is by far the greatest unknown singer in the world today, and has been for more than a decade now! Nice reaction. Sohyang is gospel singer who's great faith (and church experience) infuses her work with emotion and establishes a powerful connection with her audience. She was in her late 30s when she did this performance and now in her 40s has become even more comfortable and confident in all the things she can do with her voice. You wouldn't believe it, but in her early 20s she was a bit of a gospel screamer as she fired away at high Cs. Over the two decades since, she has added, still adds, technical proficiency, emotional intensity, and charisma to her live music. Her mixed voice up to a B5 is now totally at her command and she can put power into her head voice a few half tones higher. Her lower registers are relatively weak but she makes up for it with resonance and tonal color. For a peek at her versatility, react to Everyone and Lean On Me from Immortal Songs 2, and I Will Always Love You, Misty, and Day Day from Begin Again Korea. We are lucky that she speaks English with so little accent. It opens up our music to Sohyang and, I'm certain, is the reason we have been introduced to her. That said, Korean is a great language for song, and I have come to enjoy her Korean work the most. Many fans of Sohyang love the songs performed in Begin Again. Truly those were masterpieces as like all her other performances. Imho, the songs that you ought to react to are songs from Immortal Song 2 and King Of Mask Singer. Songs from Immortal Song 2 are mind blowing because her cover songs are re-interpreted and they came out quite different from the original. They are just made into EPIC songs like what you experience in this video. Most of her cover songs in this competition are in English except for the iconic Arirang Alone. For me, Sohyang performances in King of Mask Singer were the best. All the performances were Korean cover songs and she covered many genre including rock and rap. Please Google "vimeo Sohyang Immortal Song with Eng sub" and you should see a list. Esp for KOMS, do not use KZfaq to react as many are just teaser. For Begin Again, her performances were wonderful except that you might not get as much chills and goosebumps as the two competitions above. My other favourite songs are Fate, Saldaga and It's Only My World from another competition.
