This song is about a couple who meet one rainy day at a bus stop. Love blooms when they share an umbrella. In a Manchester newspaper, Graham Gouldman said he wrote it whilst riding on the No. 95 bus, which ran from East Didsbury - the route went through Manchester city centre, to Sedgeley Park, Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, and on to Whitefield near Bury. Gouldman was living with his family on this route in Broughton Park Salford at the time. Graham Gouldman's father was a talented and creative writer who often helped his son with song ideas. Graham had the idea for bus stop setting, and his dad came up with the first line: "Bus stop, wet day, she's there, I say, 'please share my umbrella.'" From that starting point, he was able to finish the song. In a Song facts interview with Gouldman, he explained: "He gave me those words and I immediately, as I was reading them, heard the melody in my head, and it just kind of wrote itself. And then the middle part of the song I wrote - I got the melody and the words all in one chunk."

Yes this is 60s Hollies. Other great 60s Hollies are "Look through any window" "Carrie Ann" " On a Carousel" "Stop Stop Stop". Another Great reaction today 😀 Hippies were in the latter part of the 60s, the beginning was still a sweet and Innocent spillover from the 50s(pre Beatles or as Amber would say "Soda pop shop" (Like Grease era) 😀 ill recommend some Brenda Lee "Im sorry"(1960) and Connie Francis" "Who's sorry now(1959) also can we get some Jan and Dean? My father, Ron Richards, produced this record along with all their other hits. He discovered them when they were playing at the "The Cavern" in Liverpool. He had been sent north by George Martin, his boss at the time & latterly business partner, to look for talent. He was impressed by their vocal sound. They were then brought to Abbey Road to record & the rest as they say is history. I remember going to many times to Hollies sessions as a youngster including the one in which "Air That I Breathe" was recorded. Dad would certainly be amazed & delighted that this music is still so appreciated by so many around the world.

This song also brings to mind The Cowsills song “The Rain the Park and Other Things”. It was the same period of time so the same vibe. The Hollies were part of the British Invasion. I remember listening to this in my Camaro on the radio on the way to high school. This upbeat song just made you feel happy listening to it. For a while the Hollies had one hit after another. My suggestion is to go back and listen to the studio version of their song “ He Ain’t Heavy; He’s My Brother”. The live version doesn’t have a lot of the music magic that the studio version has.

Must have been nice to have a brand new car in high school! Especially a Camaro. Coincidentally, this song hit the Hot100 at #98 in July of 1966 and reached it's peak position at #5 on September 11, 1966, 6 days before the first Camaro was sold on September 17 (while the song was still at #5). That's pretty cool. It didn't fall off the charts until October 29. the same day their next record to chart in the U.S., "Stop, Stop Stop" entered the chart at #76!

Fun connections: The Hollies named their band after Buddy Holly, whose band The Crickets had inspired the name “Beatles.” Later, another British band named themselves The Iveys in tribute to the Hollies (via the Christmas carol “The Holly and the Ivy”). The Iveys eventually signed with the Beatles’ Apple Records and were renamed Badfinger.

Both The Hollies & The Beatles were greatly influenced by Buddy Holly (like a lot of the bands who were part of the British Invasion). The Hollies named their band in his honor. I agree with the others commenting - "Long Cool Woman" needs to be your next Hollies' song.

The "British Invasion" category is very much from a US perspective and included many acts, such as ballad singers, which the British would not have thought of as being similar at all. At the time, the British categorised The Hollies as a Beat Group, like The Beatles, The Searchers etc. By about 1966/7 in the UK, beat as a genre was fading and some groups managed the transition to psychedelia or other genres better than others. The Hollies were rare in being able to survive as a major chart act well into the 1970s whereas, say, The Searchers or The Tremeloes or The Dave Clark Five didn't.

The Hollies have so many great songs, and there is a definite dividing line that happens right about 1968 or '69 when Graham Nash left the band to join Crosby, Stills and Nash. After he left the Hollies, they had some great hits like "He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother)," "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)," and "The Air That I Breathe." But I really think their best work came when Nash was still in the band. Here's a quick chronology of their biggest '60s hits: "Just One Look" (1964), "Look Through Any Window" (1965), "Bus Stop" and "Stop Stop Stop" (1966), "On A Carousel," "Pay You Back With Interest," "Carrie Anne" (1967), "Jennifer Eccles" (1968). Then came the departure of Nash and their sound morphed slightly. Honestly, if I had to pick my favorite Hollies songs from the '60s, they'd probably be "Look Through Any Window" and "Pay You Back With Interest." But you checked "Bus Stop" off the list, and I've always considered that one to be a must-listen if you wanted to get a sense for what the Hollies were all about. Kudos to you for doing this one. I've been suggesting it for a while now. Another '60s band that I have yet to hear ANY reaction channel do a reaction video to is the Grass Roots. The Grass Roots were one of the top AMERICAN bands during an era that was dominated by British acts. Their biggest hits include "Where Were You When I Needed You" (1966), "Let's Live for Today" (1967), "Bella Linda" and "Midnight Confessions" (1968), "I'd Wait A Million Years" and "Heaven Knows" (1969), "Temptation Eyes" (1970), "Sooner Or Later" (1971). Their biggest being "Let's Live for Today" and "Midnight Confessions," although my favorite was always "Where Were You When I Needed You." A great band that often gets overlooked.

Graham Nash and lead singer Allan Clarke were grade school friends that formed the Hollies. Nash sings the high harmony here, and he also sang high harmonies for the super group he left to join, Crosby, Stills, Nash (and sometimes Young (Neil Young)). All the prior Hollies tunes you guys had listened to were after Nash left. Early Hollies are also great. I recommend Just One Look (a cover of a Doris Troy song), or Stop, Stop, Stop. Guitarist Tony Hicks sang the middle harmonies, and is still active with the group.

When Graham Nash left the band recruited Terry Sylvester from The Swinging Blue Jeans, Terry contributed songs and appeared on live performances of Sorry Suzanne (which I think Nash had recorded on the record release) and kept the Hollies going into the 1970s.

I swear I was just listening to this one this morning and thought you guys would like this one. Nice coincidence. This came out the year I was born, love it. I would like to ask you to check out the band Squeeze another British band from 70s/80s who I think is underrated. They are one of my top 5 bands. Is That Love, Pulling Mussels, Another Nail in My Heart, Black Coffee in Bed. I think Tempted was probably one of there biggest songs here. Give them a try.

This is early Hollies, from when Graham Nash was still.a member. Other early Hollies hits include "Carrie Ann", "Carosel", "Pay it Back With Interest", 'I'm Sorry, Suzanne". After Graham Nash left Allan Clarke replaced him as lead singer, and the groups' sound became very different, with hits like "He Ain't Heavy", "Long Cool Woman", and "The Air That I Breathe".

Thanks for listening to this song, which arguably has one of the most challenging set of lyrics to understand. You asked about the genre. It’s considered Swamp rock, a genre of rock music that originated in the mid-1960s as a fusion of rockabilly and soul music with swamp blues, country music and funk. Creedence Clearwater Revival is also swamp rock. The Hollies are a British band that was part of the British Invasion. My favorite song of theirs is The Air That I Breathe, but I also love their remake of the Supremes' Stop in the Name of Love from 1983.

Good song. A great song from the same year (1966) is 'Along Comes Mary' by The Association. The song is pure genius imo; brilliantly crafted lyrics by the somewhat mysterious Tandyn Almer, skillfully sung by Jim Yester, great bassline & quite a bit going on instrumentally. This was one of the songs, among others, that hinted at the psychedelic revolution to come, while still working within the disciplines of conventional pop music.

The Hollies had so many different sounding songs. As a young child hearing them, I didn’t realize it, because Graham Nash was the early lead singer, then he was replaced by someone else. I used to think the radio DJ’s sang these songs (lol). As an adult, I came to appreciate them. But, it also took me a while to appreciate that he Beatles, who, as a child, mixed in with The Monkees. I should be pleased that I was born at a time where all this great music could be blurred together.

You should movie react to 1967's 'To Sir with Love' and 'Blackboard Jungle' which is from the 1950s. Both movies had Sidney Poitier as a teacher (To Sir with Love) and a student (BlackboardJungle). And music in both that hit the top of the charts.
