Spot on. This was the era of the 2.5 minute sound bomb - and the Hollies were masters of that kind of hit single - all the elements full on in turn and with pretty much no let up. Back then if you weren't keen on a track not to worry, you knew you weren't going to have to wait 7-8 minutes for something else, you knew something else would be on in a couple of minutes.

My brother was to have a 70th birthday party in Aberdeen, Scotland, and I was hoping to surprise him by singing this at a karaoke as we hadn't seen each other for a while. @@home2624 So sorry to hear about your brother. What would have been wonderful (albeit difficult) and likely what he would have wanted was for the party to have been held anyway, celebrating the best memories and accomplishments of his life. You could have sung the song to him then. Alternatively, you can sing it to him privately, knowing that his spirit will be there with you then and he will know (and already knows) how you feel about him.

@@bomagosh This is a ballad which is generally progressive, like a story from start to finish. Early on the lyric is "someday my name and hers is going to be the same," then " By August, she was mine." The final is "nice to think that that umbrella LEAD me to a vow" not will lead me to a vow or could lead me to a vow. I think that the storyline is how sharing an umbrella ignited a love affair that ultimately led to marriage. It's a cutesy song so it really should have a cutesy ending. Just my opinion, I haven't spoken to Graham Gouldman (10 CC) who wrote the song.

@gregsager2062

Yep. The sly cleverness of songwriter Graham Gouldman lies in his awareness that, while the standard-issue romantic words of pop songs are typically pitched at females (who tend to tune into the romantic aspect of life much more than do males as a matter of general interest), a pretty high percentage of males become zealously romantic when they're in love. The difference is that they tend to become romantic in a determined or even driven manner when they're pitching woo. The line "someday my name and hers are going to be the same" may be one of the best lines ever written about romance from the male point of view in a pop song. This is a man who has found the love of his life and is going to do whatever is necessary to make her his wife ... although the beauty of the song is that a huge part of the "whatever is necessary" was the simple act of kindness -- sharing an umbrella with a stranger on a rainy day -- he performed in the song's opening lines.

It's sort of a variation on a very old songwriting trope. A popular song called "I'll Buy the Ring and Change Your Name to Mine" was published in 1919, and the 1920 song "In Apple Blossom Time" had a similar lyric, "I'll be with you to change your name to mine."

This song is a masterclass in lyric writing: Bus stop Wet day She’s there I say ‘please share my umbrella’ Bus stop Bus goes She stays Love grows under my umbrella It’s like a script with minimal direction and you’re able to fill in all the blanks with your imagination. It’s stripped back to the bare essentials. Especially even avoiding describing her except as ‘she’. That allows anyone who has experienced unrequited love to immediately draw on that idea of ‘that’ person. Will ‘she’ be there today? Superb stuff.

You never really get much of a moment in the spotlight if you play drums in a song-oriented band rather than a band that features jamming or soundscape-sculpting, unless you screw up your primary responsibility (keeping the beat) or unintentionally change the tempo for your bandmates -- and that's the spotlight no drummer wants. Great drummers can step into a song-oriented band and make their own mark in subtle ways through tasty fills, interesting entrances and exits (which Bobby Elliott does on "Bus Stop" and in several other Hollies songs), and unique patterns (take a bow, Mr. Richard Starkey). This, incidentally, also applies to most of the great studio drummers in rock history -- guys like Earl Palmer, Hal Blaine, the holy trinity of Motown (Pistol Allen, Uriel Jones, and Papa Zita Benjamin), Al Jackson, Jr., Bernard Purdie, Jim Keltner, Jeff Porcaro, and Kenny Aronoff, among others -- who never got even four bars all to themselves, because their job was to efficiently drive what was hopefully a hit record. Their genius, as was the case with Bobby Elliott of the Hollies, was in their ability to not just keep time and maintain the beat but to add something -- a tight pocket, an infectious dance groove, cool little motifs that act as hooks, interesting entrances and exits, ear-catching fills, etc. -- that didn't damage the song's listenability by acting as an unnecessary distraction but actually made the song better in subtle ways the listener might not even detect. Of course, Andy and Alex always listen for the drumming in a reaction -- so it's no surprise that they noticed Bobby Elliott, even though they don't know his name, whereas your typical man or woman on the street (or at a bus stop!) wouldn't consciously notice the drums on "Bus Stop", but would instead zero in on Graham Gouldman's inventive storytelling and insanely catchy melody or the delicious harmonies of Allan Clarke, Graham Nash, and Tony Hicks.

I think we should start a crusade for these two guys to listen to 10cc....Probably the most innovative and influential bands of the 70's...if not ever. I have noticed these past couple of years Andy and Alex like songs that surprise them. Changes in chords, sudden changes in pace and mood...they really don't know what they are missing....and all with great lyrics and Beach Boy levels of harmonies. Dang, honestly...you Yanks! (Love you guys and my fave country in the world so don't get upset)

Yes, he explicitly states they got married. "Nice to think that that umbrella led me to a vow." You maybe don't hear the term 'wedding vows' as much now days but he's definitely saying they've already taken them. The whole song celebrates that. All the lyrics are economical, but brilliant.

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress was an accidental hit. One of the singers was still in the studio and the engineer (producer) suggested recording another song to fill out the album. The Hollies were always a harmony group.

Glad you hit the Hollies once again. My suggestion for next hit by them is "Stop, Stop, Stop" from 1966. Great song, fun story. Their biggest hit was "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" from '72. Slow, deep song with a great social message . Fun fact, ... Graham Nash, who later went on to be a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, was a founding member of this group. He left around '67 or '68. :) Thanks guys !

Allan Clarke (lead singer) and Graham Nash (high harmony) had been singing together since primary (grade) school. That is the same Graham Nash that joined Steven Stills and David Crosby after leaving the Hollies behind. This group was not only contemporaries of the Beatles, but, also often were in the same studio at the same time. My other favorite Hollies tunes are, Stop, Stop, Stop, Carrie-anne, Look Through Any Window, and their Doris Troy cover Just One Look. Dear Eloise, a Nash led song, and King Midas in Reverse, were indicative of the direction he wanted the band to go, less poppy, and both great songs, but, songs that failed hard, on the charts at the time. Label pressure forced them back to pure pop, and Nash to look for greener pastures. Another post-Nash Hollies tune to consider is Air That I Breathe.

But even more, I'd love to see you react to a song that came out the year after Bus Stop -- "The Letter" by The Box Tops. Your mind will be blown by a 16yo Alex Chilton (later of Big Star) singing with the weathered soul of a 40yo. It's just an amazing song.

Rando thought here...forgive me. One of my earliest memories in my life is hearing this song on the radio while riding in my parent's car in the backseat on a very rainy day. I remember looking out the window at the people standing at a bus stop downtown in the pouring rain. In my little 4 year old brain, I was thinking that my view matched the song on the radio perfectly. Thanks for humoring me.

"That's the way the whole thing started, silly but it's true.." Yeah, it is silly, but I have more than one instance where a very good friendship or even almost long lasting romance (but I didn't want it to go there while she did) started up over just some simple thing that happens every day in life. I can really identify with this song.

Absolutely LOVE this happy & romantic tune, always have! Easy A+! Yes, it's implied that they get married, per the line "By August she was mine", "Someday my name and hers are going to be the same" and "Nice to think that that umbrella led me to a vow" (eg. I do!). The rhyming meter of the lyrics, vocal harmonies and music all combine perfectly here! I have this placed closely to The Beatles Love Me Do and others as great 60's love songs. Definitely check out "The Air That I Breathe" - more 70's tinged Hollies, but a beautiful ballad!
