The Hollies really were a great band and "Bus Stop" was a great song. "The Air That I Breathe" will always be my favorite of theirs. Graham Nash left The Hollies to help form Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968.

Written by Graham Gouldman who wrote many hits for the Yardbirds also The Grassroots & Herman's Hermits. Later a member of 10cc. This was when Graham Nash was still in the Hollies who got their name from Buddy Holly.

Everything is perfect about this song imo. Great melody (that middle eight melody especially is magical!), great story, great vocals and harmonies and that fantastic laid back mid tempo groove of the rhythm section comprising of bass, drums and glorious strumming acoustic guitars. I've always loved that sound!

Great reaction! Hollies song suggestions… Carrie Ann….Stop Stop Stop….On a Carousel….sorry Suzzane…. To name a few. 😃 well, while you were reading, it mentioned Herman’s Hermits! A British group from the 60’s. They have a lot of good songs too! They did a beautiful song called “There’s a kind of hush”…. They also recorded “No milk today” which you read was written by Graham Gouldman! And many others. Peter Noone, their lead singer is still touring & he puts on a great show. Thanks Shawn!

Graham Nash, and one other the others in this band told how they The Everly Brothers. These men were were from Manchester UK. They could not get tickets to this concert, the Everly Brothers' , yet the tale goes that the Brothers often met with their fans -the two English youths had coffee, and talked with the Everly's. Graham kept that to meet with his fans, talk, know what they wanted. (early 60's)

Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress next! Another upbeat one, with a different sound from this one (and a story like no other lol). I have a hard time deciding between that one, this one, and The Air That I Breather as my favorite of theirs. :) Speaking of Graham Goldman of 10cc, you should check out their big one: I'm Not In Love. They did something really unique in that, and Dreadlock Holiday (with the video!) is very unique, including the story.

Three minutes were the absolute limit in those days until challenged around 1966, but the longest song at the time would only be played late at night. (Stones: Going Home) Radio was the cheese then and you had to have airplay or your record wouldn't sell. Bus Stop is one of Graham Gouldman's best efforts. Also wrote for the Yardbirds. Eventually became part of 10CC.
@reddoxx4754
@reddoxx4754 7 ай бұрын
He wrote two of the Yardbirds' best early songs: "For Your Love" and "Heart Full of Soul", before he was 19. The first one contributed to Eric Clapton deciding to leave the Yardbirds, because he wanted to continue playing blues rather than rock. The second was the group's first single after Jeff Beck joined.

Oh, you can't mention Herman's Hermits without playing I'm Into Something Good. You've probably heard it in movies. It's an optimistic cute meet song in the same vein as Bus Stop. Since I was a child in the 60s I must mention their very popular novelty song I'm Henry the VIII I Am, or surrender my Childhood in the 1960s and 70s credentials. They also hit with There's a Kind of Hush and Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter and many more. And for The Hollies, one of their Must Hear songs is Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress. But either pull up the lyrics as you listen or watch a lyric video. I've loved it forever but I couldn't make sense of it until the Internet came along and clarified it. It's a story telling song, so you need the lyrics to follow it. 🧓🎸😎💖

Thanks, Shawn - great song.. Hollies were most known for melodic hits, but their catalogue was actually quite diverse... "Long Cool woman in a Black Dress" was a hit for them (sounds a bit like something CCR would have done) .. but one lesser known was a song called "Stop Stop Stop".. which bears an incredible resemblance to the Who's later hit: "Baba O'Reilly" .. in terms of the middle-eastern strumming & rhythms... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtVilt2Wmp62ZXk.html
