I was a father that left a wife and children to fight. I had to exhibit the most self discipline I could to not cry. To remain strong so that the potential last image of me to my wife and kids was a face of strength, determination and ultimately responsibility. But as soon as I got in a plane, truck or bus to take me me away I had to take a minute or three to release this emotion. Then compartmentalize it somewhere and focus on my mission. Now that I’m retired, those kids are grown, still have a 12 year old as of this year (2024). Bc of my age I’m more sensitive to this and am amazed I was able to do this for 24 years. There was a lot of sacrifice and I can’t thank God enough for my wife who has been with me thirty one years - 22 years of being married to the Army!!!

@@bryangeist8608 when my dad was deployed he said once he boarded that plane he lost it. He said all the Marines did. They are taught to be strong and he is and was, but everyone is human and leaving your family and your country to go to a foreign land is not for the weak. Thank you for your service and your family as well. Wives and children definitely serve, but in a different way.

My dad was in the Air Force for 28 years so I grew up in the military then I married the love of my life and he went back into the military in 08. My husband served in desert Storm as a Marine and then went back into the army and 08. He just recently retired after 22 years and I'm so thankful and grateful that I don't have to say goodbye anymore at the airport. He deployed seven times. He's my hero and so is my father who also served in Vietnam. I was a military dependent for 36 of my 52 years on this Earth. There is no prouder wife, daughter, granddaughter, niece, great great granddaughter than I am. My family goes back in the military for many generations. I've been to All 48 continental United States and parts of Europe when I was in Middle School. I wouldn't have changed my life for anything even though it was hard. Thank you to all the soldiers out there keeping us safe at home here!

Veteran of the U.S. Army from 88-2015. Served in Berlin Wall collapse in 89 -Desert Storm 90-91, supported our efforts in the Bosnian War 93-95, and Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). Thank you for recognizing the freedoms you have in this country. I’ve been to (10) different countries and some were very nice. But there is no comparison to the gift of living in the USA….despite the problems created by our own two party good old boy system. I swore a life long oath to protect the liberties and freedoms granted to everyone by our Constitution. Not whichever President that happens to be in office. I’d lay down my life for everyone or anyone to gain the God Given rights that our Constitution guarantees! Thanks again brother.

My husband is 2x purple heart recipient and those calls almost killed me. He is retired now and my son is taking after his father and grandfather and joining the army. Yes, my man. You get it. I have never served in the military, and those of us that haven't will never understand what that is like, but we have a responsibility to honor those that do. We get to live these lives that we live and we get to complain about the petty BS that we think is sooo stressful because those that serve in the military are willing to put their lives on the line for OUR freedom. How pathetic are people who can't handle the amazing lives we are given. How ridiculous it is to hear people complain that they "just can't make it". No, the majority of these people just don't want to put in the effort to change their position. Go join the military if there is nothing physically wrong with you and you have no clue how to control your future.

I did 7 years in the Army. That call is one that we who have signed up both gladly answer and completely dread getting. I was part of 1st Cavalry 2002-2005. And, I joked with a squadmate that somehow Toby Keith knew about him and wrote this about him, as said squadmate had a son and a newborn daughter when we went to Iraq January of 2004.

Did not get back for almost two years and missed that much of her life It's very, very hard to do. During my time we were not at any war but having only been married for almost a year unless you have done it, you can not understand it. My Dad's only brother was a career Navy veteran. My Mom's only brother was a career Air Force veteran. My Dad tried to enlist but couldn't due to a medical issue. I remember times that my uncles were deployed and fought in various wars. The thing that really sticks with me was the understanding that not only is that soldier/sailor serving, Their spouses and children are ALSO serving our Country. They deserve much better than they usually get. Being a military family can be pretty tough in a lot of ways.

What you have to understand is that even though service members may not go to war they still give up so much. I have been in the Navy for 13 years. Never been shot at and never shot at anyone. I am an electrician (EM in the Navy). But I have been on many 9 month deployments out at sea and I worked Thanksgiving, New Years, Christmas, missed birthdays and family deaths, friends deaths, anniversaries etc etc. I could go on and on all the things I have missed. Every service member and their families sacrifice more than most could ever know. War or not, orders are orders and almost 100 percent of the time it means leaving your family and friends behind for duty. Imagine getting a message that your grandfather has passed away and you know you can't make it to his funeral even though your grandmother wants you to help carry his casket.....Thats heartbreaking while you are thousands of miles away in the middle of the ocean. Now you see why the suicide rate is so high in the military.

As a veteran, I appreciate your appreciation. Always shake my head when people knock the US military… Revolutionary, Civil, WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan (and other places). Every single conflict was to defend liberty, or protect Americans. Some more justified than others in my opinion, but it’s the leaders making those calls.
