Bono's hero since he was a young boy was MLK Jr. He wrote this for him. He is also a strong Christian. So you will hear his beliefs in many songs. They have never played Memphis because MLK was killed there. A great song is Bad. It is old but as fans we love it. Bono adds songs to it all the time.

Bono has incredible range and power to his voice. I always love people's reaction "that boy can sing!" U2 was basically untouchable from 1983-1988, did a complete reinvention and I mean COMPLETE during the 1990s, reinvented themselves again in 2000 and released major worldwide hits during 2000-2005. And were basically the best live act during all that time. So for 25 years, they were basically the pinnacle of their genre. Also, they were very much involved in addressing poverty in developing countries and were quite politically active without alienating one side against another. If you want to hear some other just fantastic songs by the group, look up I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Vertigo, Original of the Species, and Bad. They are in their 60s now and have slowed down a lot, especially with some health scares for Bono recently. They still put out good music, some that ranks with their best, but are not producing major international hits like they used too when they were young men. Time does that to most bands. They are easily my favorite artist.

What KILLS me, is that old ass U2 STILL holds up! Its fucking CRAZY! But FOR REAL... it still holds up because of Larry Mullen on the drums! The dude was DECADES ahead of his time! He knew what worked and made it his OWN!

Not only holds up but really kicks the ass of modern U2- bands evolve (I get it) but they've never really hit the heights musically they achieved before 1990

Their music is timeless. Larry Mullen Jr. is one of the few drummers who you recognize right away. He's not technically brilliant (like a Neal Peart) but his drum lines are iconic. They have hooks that you recognize right away. Very few drummers have that.

Not Liverpool; DUBLIN, Ireland. Band is comprised of Paul Hewson (Bono), David Evans (The Edge), Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullin Jr. They came together around 1975, and began recording commercially in 1978. Their first album "Boy" came out in 1980. They've been on a steady rise since then, and have gone through a number of transformations as they've reinvented themselves over the years. Much of their work is strongly influenced by the Bible, since they are Christians, and make no apologies for this. They also don't bang anyone over the head with it. Their music has a very spiritual, and thought provoking side that captivated me, and formed my own views of my own beliefs.

@@leannmiller7153 First - 18:00 hours in Memphis is 24:00 hours in Dublin. The correct time-shifted reference, then, would have been "Early morning, April "5"', if you think that a local time reference to an event that occurred before he was born was what Bono had in mind when he wrote the lyric. So, wrong either way.

@@krypto_9872 I have read but not "heard" that, but it just confirms that he wrote and recorded it incorrectly. Its not a biggie, - the song is legendary, regardless. I just find it interesting that someone wrote a lyric with a very specific and unnecessary time reference without verifying it. And then, of course, the blind defence of it that went one step farther/deeper.

Proud to be half Irish. They’ll always be special to me because of that, plus they just adore America. I saw them here in TX the month after 9/11, when they projected all the names of the victims onto the walls and ceiling of the arena in a revolving light show while performing “One.” Everyone was crying. And then I was in attendance for their Under A Blood Red Sky performance in Denver at Red Rocks in 1983, quite by accident. That’s a whole ‘nother story, lol.

my most favourite U2 song, from my fav album of theirs, "the unforgettable fire". the singer's name is bono (pronounced BAH-no) and yes, my god he has some pipes. little known fact: background vocals at the end (the "oh-oh-ohohohs) were brian eno (co-producer of the album, former member of roxy music) and chrissie hynde (from the pretenders). this was U2 at their finest, their live shows were LIFE CHANGING experiences. i cherish the memories, the youth, the energy, the feeling of anything is possible. thank you, U2.

The visuals and graphics are so much more impressive by the fact that at this time they had to record in secret in abandoned warehouses and closed out movie theatres because the masses would flock to wherever they were being rumored to be. To the point where recording had to be shut down because it was causing a public nuisance. (As seen in the video of "Where the Streets Have No Name") They literally made this masterpiece from what little they had to work with.
