True story back in 1992. I worked at their record company as they brought the entire company to a convention. Unless you were a bigwig at the label office, you had no idea who some of the bands that were going to play were because some of them hadn’t had their first record out. Imagine you’re sitting in a hotel convention center ballroom. I think we were at banquet circle tables at 10 o’clock in the morning. The lights go dark and rage against the machine comes on - not singing this song but singing there belting out the lyrics to “killing in the name of” which you don’t know yet so you think that they’re telling everyone “F you they won’t do what you told me” with the “you” being “us” lol. Of course that’s not what it was it was far deeper but in the moment 50-year-old stodgy sales reps sitting there overturning banquet room tables. I wish there had been social media and cell phones with video back then.😂

I'm a grown man and for some reason, every time I hear this song it makes me feel like I'm gonna cry, very similar feeling to listening to Zombie by the Cranberries.

Happy belated to Tom Morello who just turned 60 a few days ago. Definitely one of the most innovative guitarists of the era and this solo is a perfect example of how he'd use a guitar to create noises youd never imagine were coming from a guitar. He's got solos that sound like cats screaming, solos that sound like dj's scratching, solos that sound like harmonicas... And its both sad and wonderful how on topic most of RATM's lyric are to both the era they were coming up in as well as today.

Tom Morello does lots of things on guitar no one had ever seen before. He uses every piece of hardware, everything in the signal chain from the strings all the way to the speaker as his instrument and sees all of it as potential for creative expression. If taking the cable out of the jack and touching it to the pickups makes an interesting sound he'll find a way to make music with it. He'll use effects pedal in ways their designers never intended and create whole songs out of the noise. Nothing is off limits. There's no other guitar player like him.

Zack is a true poet. There are some amazing lyrics spread throughout RATM songs that both tell incredible stories as well as capture so much of the angst of multiple generations against the system. Tom Morello also an amazing guitarist. Definitely continue to go down the RATM rabbit hole, you will be glad you did.

While I could go on about all 4 of their collective, creative genius and how far ahead of their time they were, and Tom Morello especially is a wizard on guitar, you could spend a lot of time on just RAtM - but Morello does 60s folk protest songs as a soloist in The Nightwatchman. He blends metal and hip hop with Street Sweeper Social Club, he does angry 80s hip hop with Prophets of Rage, and is part of a grunge supergroup with members of soundgarden with Audioslave. He’s toured as a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band. He’s got his honors undergrad from Harvard! And he makes guitars do things that you didn’t know it could do. Pure genius.

Saw them in 94 at glastonbury...already loved them from buying the first album and this was one of the most powerful gigs ive ever attended...Zach is a militant poet and his words are even more relevant today as they were 30 years ago....

Would love to hear you review their song “Wake Up”. Chris Cornell with Audioslave did a cover of “Killing in the Name”; and the contrast really gives you an appreciation of power Zach generates in his vocals.

Fantastic reaction. You nailed it with the anthem and/or protest style of the song. I’m 53 and vividly remember all of the tension between police and institutions against minority communities. During my teens I was entrenched in the Republican mindset and grew up in a predominantly white area. I moved to Mexico during the late 80’s and came back to the states right at the height of all of this. This song was like a spotlight for issues that many white kids didn’t even know about, because our parents weren’t talking about it. This was a game changer for me. Love this song! Like has been mentioned already, it’s a sad statement that this song is still so relatable today. Government and law enforcement claims to support the American family while their actions all too often don’t support this (their pockets full of gun shells), especially when talking about minorities.

RATM is a band I started listening to in the 90's when I was a teenager. They are still relevant - now more than ever - sadly. But man, back in the day you had to read the booklet with all the lyrics that came with the record, because Zack is a poet and his words hit home. It's quite telling that they found their success in Europe, because they were virtually banned from the U.S. back in the day. They spoke truth to power. Tom Morello - The master of guitar sounds. A Harvard Grad and a brilliant guitar player. Uses a custom installed toggle switch to "cut" sound completely out running various pedals in conjunction with a harmonizer with a screamer pedal to get his amazing sounds. It's very prevalent in the intro of "Know Your Enemy" as well as the solo toward the end of that song. First time i heard that intro I thought it was a Synthesizer of some sort. Was fortunate enough to see one of their final original era concerts in 2000 at the Forum in LA.

10:40 Yes! All of the musicians are playing loose with time at different points in the song and it adds a lot of groove and funk to the track. My favorite is those moments where the drummer Brad has those seven successive snare hits that are all behind the beat.

Love your reactions and analysis and I love the fact that you let the song play through so you could get a feel for the whole thing and pick out things to go back to. I know you have to comment and analyze (that's what the channel is about) but it seems like a lot of reactors are so concerned about copyright that they stop so often and it takes them out of the song. I get it. But sometimes you have to see the bigger picture before you can see the smaller pieces.

Such an amazing interplay of energies in this song -- it was an absolute bombshell when it came out. The production on the vocals is totally fitting for the vibe. Their advancement of technique was both bold and subtle -- simple repetition hid serious chops -- but the 1000% ENERGY was mind-blowing. I've got an indelible memory of my band pulling into a college campus for a show and being directed around the back for load-in. As we pulled into the little service alley RATM was pounding at high volume and there were kids hanging out of the windows screaming the lyrics to each other. It was a vibe and the show that night was amazing.

just a little side note, audioslave is essential rage against the machine but with chris as the main singer, same band members but different singers, if you see tom's guitar riff in 'like a stone' and his riff in this, you will notice the similarities.

You can NEVER go wrong with reacting to any RATM song. My favorite lyric is from the song Down Rodeo(as in Rodeo drive) "Can't waste the day when the night brings a hearse, make a move and plead the 5th because you can't plead the 1st." P.s. I think of RATM as a 90's version of the social movement songwriting and instrumentals(more hardcore for sure) like that of the 60's. Raw,cutting edge music that delivered messages we All needed to see,feel and hear even for a 62 year old head banger like me. That,to me is who Rage is. Great reaction. I was a kid when folk was still on the radio and I had no appreciation of it then so I missed some of the jems. RATM and this song in particular fed me the message in my favourite flavour; head-bangy-gonna-make-u-movey. The song's been anthemic since it came out. Rally round the family. No shells though, I'm Canadian.

I remember when this came out. At first my ear heard “rap”, but then I saw this video and was like, “holy cow! They are doing that with a bass, guitar, and drums!” So cool!!

There's good reason you rarely hear RATM covers - I've never heard anyone match Zach de la Rocha's intensity (yes, including Denzel Curry). Bulls on Parade is just packed so full of musical, lyrical, and political brilliance. In a few generations we can hope people will listen to this song with confusion but, sadly, it'll probably still hit the nail on the head.

I think Tom Morello which is the guitarist for rage against the machine The only one that goes anything like him that ive seen or heard 0 is Vernon Reed from In living color they he's the only one other one that plays kind of the same kind of solos and it's amazing technique and style and I've played guitar for only 45 years. RATM was incredibly intentional with their lyrics. They believed deeply in their art & it showed. Zach, Tom, Tim, & Brad were the epitome of raging against the machine.

he song is a metaphor for the arms dealers and war being a profitable business in our current society(bulls on parade= war pigs, as in they are both violent and blatantly destructive and unconcerned with the damage they cause) and war being viewed as a necessary aspect of our lives. How murder and destruction of other countries can be taken advantage of from a business and political view point. How the government almost needs an enemy to unite the public and keep them fired up and distracted. Also how the government continues to focus time and resources on war as apposed to domestic issues. Then they also reference propaganda being taught in our schools and media. Excellent review as always
