When I was 14, I saw Rage live with a girl I liked. Within seconds of the show starting, this young lady started doing exactly what you did as soon as the song started. I remember thinking she was too cool for me. When I was thinking this, she grabbed my hand , kissed me for the first time (on the cheek), and screamed thank you into my ear. 22 years later and she still holds my hand and screams in my ear the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

"They don't have to burn the books, they just remove em". That's my favorite freaking line. So many small gems in this song lyrically. As a guitarist, I love how RATM take these simple groovy riffs, and turn them into anthem's that move crowds. The song writing is top notch. Every Rage song has me feeling like I can overthrow the government right now by myself. After I am done listening, I remember I am just a normal bloak in my pajamas watching KZfaq while eating Dorito's. I don't even own an airsoft pistol.

Look, if you love RatM, the first Album as a whole is a must. It was one of the first albums where i did know back then the whole Lyrics and could quote them all. So here are some must must hear songs: "Know your Enemy". "Freedom" "Bullet in the Head" "Guerilla Radio" "Bombtrack" "Sleep now in the fire" (with one of the best music videos ever) "Wake up" "Calm like a Bomb"

Never apologize for pausing and reflecting. That's why we're here. I want to hear your thoughts, your feelings, your reactions. That "Fuck." After the "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes, not need..........While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells..." verse was absolutely perfect. That's really the only reaction to how much he dropped in a single verse. Legit one of the most powerful, potent, devastating verses of the decade. And yes, Tom is his own brand of wild genius, but the meaning is always the biggest focus to try and unpack. The military industrial complex isn't just destroying America, it's destroying lives everywhere, and Zach is gonna say how he feels about it. I always recommend lyrics on the second listen, not the first. Let the energy and whatever you pick up guide you and take you away. THEN you can soak in the layers of meaning in the lyrics and how it empowers the "rage" of the band. Next recommendations from a lifelong fan: "Wake Up." It doesn't get clearer or more on-brand than this song. "Down Rodeo" is incredible, too, of course. So so so many. Really just spin a giant wheel of their songs and you can't land on a bad one to react to and process.

There's still so much from these guys for you to check out: Know Your Enemy, Testify, Take the Power Back, People of the Sun, Sleep Now In The Fire, Bombtrack, etc etc. One of my absolute favorites is Freedom - most people seem to sleep on it, but lemme tell ya, it is EPIC.

Other songs that you could react to are Know your enemy, Wake up, People of the sun, Snakecharmer, Testify, Calm like a bomb, Sleep now in the fire or Guerrilla Radio. Thank you very much for that reaction Aileen. I always love your honesty and enthusiasm, but this time you really got me with your insights to one of my favorite bands. I had never considered your analysis/comparison of the refrain to the children's rhyme of "pocket full of posies," and the potential metaphor/symbolism of death there. For me the refrain is more literal, about standing up for one's "family" whoever they may be, blood or otherwise, and being willing to stand. Zack is a serious poet, and so I don't disregard his use of metaphor instead of just making a rhyme. Thanks for helping me see something new after 30 years of loving these guys. I thought your analysis was both insightful and passionate. Thanks again. Next please: "Down Rodeo" by RATM, and please, please do Pearl Jam's live performance of "Porch" from the Netherlands...you won't be disappointed...promise. [Spoiler: watch Eddie do a 25-foot vertical (2 1/2 stories) jump into a crowd.]

Dayam! @Aileen your reaction was a total 180 from what I’ve seen so far and I love it. This looked like the real you. I’ve always taken “Rally round the family, pocket full of shells” to be about the LAPD and LASD. They’re the so called family and they close ranks. The song was released in 96, not so long after the LA riots caused by the acquittal of the LAPD officers who beat Rodney King. Lots of tension here at that time. I’ve enjoyed listening to Rage and their live concerts are exciting.

I always took it to mean you should go to any lengths to protect your family and the "They" means us Americans. Believe me, if my parents called me because someone is threatening them, I'm grabbing the 12 ga and a pocket full of shells and I'm gonna rally 'round the family. It seems to me that the government is increasingly less interested in protecting its citizens and we should always be ready to protect ourselves and our family and neighbors. Its up to us now.

Tom Morello and Lane Staney were in a group called class of 1999 where they did a good version of Pink Floyd another brick in the wall

Also I heard that the meaning of the"rally round the family with a pocket full of shells" refers to politicians who expouses family values while sending the young to war

Beautiful reaction and what a statement "....without flipping someone off, you are listening to this incorrectly" Love it! My first intro to Rage back in the 90's was bullet in the head. Mad bollox. On the Ren front are you doing a reaction to Lost all faith please? Also saw his Crutch vid with Bibi and it tore the guts out of me, it was beautiful and tragic at the same time.

1:15 Arms back, chin forward, eyes focused. The "ready to explode" position required when you know sh*t's about to go down. If she wasn't before, she's a metal girl now.
