Skullz reacts to Die Eier von Satan & Pushit by Tool
Lyrical dissection.
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

Maynard introduced this song at a 1998 concert like this.........."Ever have someone love you so much that they tried to kill you? Like they're sucking you into a hole, and you have to kill them to get away?..........me either"

I've listened to this song thousands of times over the years, and the line "I must persuade you another waaaaaaay" still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. This is Maynards greatest vocal moment in my opinion. Seeing them do this live a few months back was incredible. I've always told people, you don't listen to TOOL, you experience them. 🙂

I totally agree...I think that 3-line section together is such an absolutely beautiful little vocal section/performance: "If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay, you minimize my movement anyway... I must persuade you another WAYYY!!!!" The first line is actually a bit tricky to sing, the cadence and the number of syllables feels odd when you sing it... I've been singing it alone in my house for the past ten minutes. So satisfying.

For me personally this is about an abusive relationship, "the gap" is the relationship the other is forcing on him, "choke this infant before me" the abuser is childish, "who am i to judge or strike you down" i act the same way, "staring down the hole again, hands are on my back again" I'm getting pushed back into the relationship, "it will end no other way" i have to literally hurt you to get out of this relationship. Great reaction brother!

In Jimmy, when he was eleven he left his mother to go live with his father, where he remained through high school. His father was a coach with the school. Maynard wrestled some and ran track. After school he went into the army, imagine that. Oh and in case you didn’t know, he’s big into Brazilian jiu-jitsu. You need to watch the “fan incident” concert footage. Oh his step dad was a bad dude, get from that what you will. He did a great interview with Marc Maron.

Just going to share a quick story. It was July of 1997. I had this album playing for a couple of months….but there was something about PUSHIT that I kept gravitating toward. I remember driving this day in July and the song, finally landed on me like a wall of bricks. I pulled over and balled my eyes out….still do occasionally. Like you, myself and Maybe Maynard….I didn’t feel alone. Abuse is heavy and music can bring that trauma to the surface and really exercise it.

I think he’s speaking to himself here. he sees these past things calling him in again and he’s saying ‘don’t tempt me or we’ll both be gone’. This is one of my favorite songs. I feel like all of these past versions of himself get clarity after having his third eye opened; which is why Lateralus is so poignant and speaks on the ways to healing these ‘gaps’.

Dier von satan is a chocolate chip cookie recipe yelled at you in German. Don’t ask me the meaning of it because I don’t have any idea either… Pushit is my favorite TOOL song. It references an abusive relationship. And the cycle of domestic violence. The walking on eggshells phase and explosion phase followed by the honeymoon phase where your abuser tried to make you stay. The music even mimics that. Deep stuff.

Keep in mind, Maynard often tells stories like he is making a movie etc. It doesn’t necessarily have to be something he has actually been through. Like with PRISON SEX, he described the cycle of the abused sometimes becoming the abuser, but he never once mentions in his AMAZING book about his WHOLE life (U MUST READ IT) that he has been abused in any way. He is just such an amazing story teller that people are left to assume that he has lived through whatever he writes about. Love your MAYNARD reactions by the way. I am here for your whole journey. I fell in love for this man when Undertow first came out. I was lucky enough to see him in some fairly small clubs on the Undertow tour. Love seeing you get excited the way I did when I first heard his voice and read his lyrics.

Love your lyrical analysis! I always thought of it being about an ex...but you made me think it could be about his parents. My simple take on this song is that everyone has a breaking point. Die Eier von Satan Rough english translation: The Eggs of Satan Half a cup of powdered sugar. One quarter teaspoon salt. One knife tip Turkish hash. Half a pound butter. One teaspoon vanilla-sugar. Half a pound flour. 150 g ground nuts. A little real powdered sugar, ... and no eggs. (und keine Eier) Place in a bowl, Add butter, Add the ground nuts, and knead the dough. Form eyeball-size pieces from the dough. Roll in the powdered sugar and say the magic words: "Sim sala bim bamba sala do saladim." Place on a greased baking pan and Bake at 200 degrees for 15 minutes, ...AND NO EGGS Bake at 200 degrees for 15 minutes, ...and no eggs. More of that intent we talked of before. You pretty much got it. The tongue in cheek fun side of the band. Maynard playing around with interpretation by putting a hash cookie recipe to industrial music and German narration, raising the intensity as it's read whipping a crowd into a frenzy. Music like this in the 80's early 90's bent a certain kind of person out of shape. With the whole "satanic panic" you couldn't be a metal fan without running into christian protestors at concerts and record stores or complaining in the news about music they never bothered to try to understand. "Looks evil, sounds evil, must be evil." Glad those days are mostly behind us. The same music they protested is now played over loudspeakers at sporting events, lol. It was pretty frustrating to live through it tho, you were judged evil just for listening. I think they were just playing around with that idea. As far as Pushit goes I think you have great instincts. It's really amazing to me that he can write something that is so very emotional/personal and yet keep it open to so many interpretations. It means many things to many people and that's great. I mostly see it as a toxic relationship with well, anything. Another person, addiction, religion, abuse...yourself. Insert it in this song and it can work. Pretty amazing writing in that. It seems like someone who despises being dependent on the thing that's killing them (literal or not) and is in that downward spiral and becomes desperate to separate themself before it's too late. As I write this I had a thought that it could be Maynard extricating himself from himself...his destructive self. It keeps the theme of the record. It works on so many levels and that's the genius of it. Again he's said different things about it over the years usually right before playing it in concert but those quips are mostly vague as well. He said "have you ever had someone try to drag you into a hole...yeah me neither." And they played the song, lol. I think he likes it vague. Love to see you get into it, great reaction!🤘♥️

Also you said something about the complexity and depth of the music and its sonic difference from Undertow. I thought of all that's to come if you keep going and smiled. You're spot on and it only gets better through the albums as they hone their craft, understand themselves and their purpose more as they get older (and afford better equipment, lol). They start to sound slightly different because they are constantly changing like we all do. It's fun to watch people digest music in months that a lot of us had to wait decades in the making to hear. All that time in between and hundreds of listens puts you in a certain place and time in life. It's refreshing to see you have all this information at once and having similar but new takes on it all. And the internet sucked then so meaning for songs came from magazine interviews, concert ramblings or just plain ol observation like you're doing so well. I think you going through front to back is the way to go although I'm not sure if you did Opiate, have to go through the vids and look. Some reactors just go and pick hits randomly. But if you're trying to take the journey this is the way. You're gonna love it. They paint masterpiece after masterpiece. Sorry I text too much lol.

I really appreciate that insight about Christians and Satan worshipping bands. Not something I considered since I was so young when the album dropped. And I skipped Opiate but I'll probably go back and check it out after I finished Fear Inoculum. Usually EPs are whatever but clearly I was wrong in this case lol. Thanks for the comment 💯

@@Skullzrapper You'll start to see how his dislike of organized religion factors in to how he writes and sees his mom as well. You probably noticed in Judith. His mom was very religious and as most people do when tragedy strikes (especially so young) he blamed God for her being paralyzed, thus the anger you get from the beginning (Opiate being one right out the gate, yes it's important lol🤷). He sees his mother's belief and how she's "rewarded" for it, and it becomes another outlet for his rage, rightfully so in my book sometimes. He's become an important voice for those of us who don't need religion in our lives. Spoiler if you want a totally fresh view in future reactions. Through the albums he obviously changes his view (intertwined with becoming a more whole enlightened being) from outright anger in a benevolent God that would allow this to happen to someone so devout, having to suffer so long, to a respect of his mom's devotion to her faith in the face of such a trial. Through his mother's eyes he was able to see what it's supposed to be, he saw real faith through his mother's journey. In the last song you'll see he understands the kind of faith "they only read about." It is a very beautiful send off and an important turning point. Although then he still points out religious hypocrisy in Talk Talk in A Perfect Circle which comes later. He has a begrudged sense of respect at least for his mother's faith which is a stark turn about from the place we joined him at in the beginning. I'm not gonna say too much more and I don't think it gives much away. But there's so much depth here. It's such a deeply personal struggle, I am not religious myself but grew up in a religious household. I understand all too well what that does to someone that thinks for themselves. You feel like an outcast when all those around you deem you defective/bad, even those that are supposed to love you unconditionally and have tolerance as the bible states. I am not against people believing what they want, they just shouldn't pushit on others, in any way. They usually use it as a weapon of judgement, a morality measuring stick that says I'm better than you when in fact most of the time they're the worst version of that. And we definitely still have that problem. From the top down. It permeates everything and alienates people with different beliefs. Obviously I found escape in like minded voices like Maynard's and many other bands, writers, comedians. It helped to know someone was experiencing the same thing I was and understood.

haha - Die Eier Von Satan is like Disgustipated meets Pink Floyd / In The Flesh...... this is so fun!! that section in Pushit when you feel like your getting slammed around in a plane crash, then it just breaks down into the weightlessness, you looked straight at us, in the eye, and I think I know what's goin on in there :) thought we lost you for a second then in spacedoutlandia.... that was the deepest I have seen you go inside yourself during a Tool song. yeah you felt it mate!! Definitely the most you have moved ( and tranced out ) in a Tool song so far..... now you can feel that whenever you want to :) first time I heard this song was at the gig at London Astoria circa '96, hadn't even heard the album..... the massive wrap around screen at the back of the stage had African tribal people leaping in slow motion through the breakdown, so trippy..... there were also Elephants doin the dirty later on. so............

I tend to think that “Die” is about our misperceptions. The context in which we hear it recalls Nazi Germany, but once you have the rest of the information, it’s innocuous. We do the opposite as well, by not recognizing the malevolence in a situation because the context with incomplete information makes us feel at ease with it. Feel like I’m motormouthing. Great work! German perspective here: as someone who is very analytical and crticical of our history - to ANY German, this would rather sound like a recipe (which eventually turns out to be one for edibles), than something alluding to the 3. Reich. There are really no obvious innuendos or double entendres there. On a linguistic note: yes, as a German, you notice a slight accent, but it is very minimal.

@@Skullzrapper I bet, I still remember the first time I had ever listened to Tool, it was right when Aenima came out a friend got me listening to them and at that time we had just started playing music together, him on drums and myself on guitar. Sometimes I wish I could go back and hear it for the first time again. I love hearing original bands who don't sound like anyone else and Tool has that over any other group in the last few albums. When you get time you should listen to PUSH IT, SALIVAL Live show. Try to listen with the least amount of pauses if you can. Hopefully for you it's gonna be like hearing your favorite song again for the first time but better lol. I really like your original art/music style and I can't wait to see how your life and music taste changes the further you get into Tool and hopefully some Nirvana and 90s Era, 80s and all the way back to the Beatles. Just discovered your channel and your reactions to this song and to H. really made me want to share. Even though I love Tool since the 90's, a couple of years ago I somehow rediscovered Pushit and it resonated with me in a different way. Back then I was in a long and abusive relationship with a person who has BPD (borderline personality disorder) and this song just so perfectly encapsulated what that relationship was like. "Rest your trigger on my finger" is such a powerful statement about someone who is uncontrollably and inexplicably violent to people they love. The ending of the song has exceptional significence to me, because it somewhat inspired and pushed me into ending that relationship. Survival mode kicked in because if I didn't back out from it, the violence would just escalate indefinitely, all under the guise of "love". Amazing how we all can interpret songs differently.

I love how tool speaks on every level. Internal/external, micro/macro, you'll get out of it what you need. Pushit first spoke to me thinking about an ex, and it was perfect for that situation. The more I got through the tool journey and realised what it is, Pushit made so much sense as a battle between the self and the ego. Like I said you get what you need out of it at the time. Then Pushit live makes you go through it all again from a different perspective.

The cycles of generational abuse, and how we can learn to fall in love with our pain. It takes everything to change that cycle; the sobering acknowledgment of our faults, and the emotional fuel that must be engaged with to find metamorphosis. The last refrain I feel is aimed inward. Remember the love you have cultivated for yourself, even as the pain of expression (the voice) is torn apart from the effort. THIS is what it takes to heal; a burning of the ships. There is no other way.
