First Time Making A Forging Hammer
As the title says, this is the first forging hammer off of my anvil and it has been made out of need for more hammers. This hammer will be used in my tool making processes hopefully for many years to come. We have been staying very busy making timber framing tools and spending a lot of time working on the road, I even have a few knife orders to work on.
Tools from the forge can be found here:

Sure glad you built the timber frame barn before you got so busy with job. Great place to work on your time off.

You seem to be getting more efficient with your forge work (not that I know much about it). You're a busy man and I hope you find some time to relax every now and then.

Hi Jim, One thing I did know is you weren't goofing off! You are not that type of guy! I figured you were busy farming, haying or making lots of tools for selling. And of course your chilling etc job. Your tool making is getting faster for sure! Hammers made pretty get beat up anyway and since it's yours, so be it. As always God bless and take care buddy from your long-time California subscriber. Careful with those shorts as you came to close to 🔥 burning 🔥 those leg hairs off, ha!

Doug, it gets over a 100*f in this shop in this weather. You just have to move your feet fast. I'm not a shorts guy but I'm not into passing out in the shop from the heat either.

Purdy is in the eye of the beholder (or maybe the hand of the wielder)! You have certainly come a Long way from cutting a sledge hammer down to make a pein hammer that deserved a Norse name all on it's own! Got to say I'm liking it, but the real test is how it handles ...... and you didn't tell us that ;o) My guess is that it might be a bit hard on the hand. Looks can be deceptive (and she really does not look bad at all) but it looks like the center of gravity would cause the hammer to jolt your fingers when using the pein. It might not be noticeable though and would depend on your stance when hammering so feel free to ignore or correct me on this ;o)
@TheTradesmanChannel
@TheTradesmanChannel Жыл бұрын
I'll let you know how it handles as I get to use it. It has a nice weight and the balance seems right but I'll know better as it gets put through its paces.

Not to change the subject, but would you ever use construction adhesive in a scarf joint, please?
@TheTradesmanChannel
@TheTradesmanChannel Жыл бұрын
No, timbered structures need to be able to move naturally. Sometimes the adhesive is stronger than the wood.

At first I thought 4140 was the kind of stainless I admire, 4120. 4140 is good stuff though it has less than 1% chromium, I've studied it some. Does the handle on your billet get hot at the end? I have probably 304 stainless.
