Gary went on to attend Locke High School with Gerald Albright and Patrice Rushen..I also attended Locke in the early 70's and played Sax in the best High School band in the country. Another cool brother who is still playing is Rastine Calhoun. This is when Locke's band was A-1. And a shot out to Band directors, Frank Harris, Don Dustin, and Reggie Andrews♥️👍

Good instrument recognition on the saxophone. Congrats my brotha! The instrument in the intro that you asked what it is, was the keyboard synth played by the white dude seated up higher on the 2nd keys. You're correct in planning to hear the original, which features jazz icon, Ramsey Lewis. The original is actually on his album of the same name. Sometimes the live versions have a lot of hype which can distort the subtlety of a song. This performance also has it's own awesomeness to it though. The hand drums being played on the solo are congas. Bongos are much smaller. When he switches to the sticks, those are called 'timbales'. The groove they play behind him is a Latin style mambo. Percussionist Steve Kroon also recorded a Latin version of this song as well. What you express about your music experience, was my 'moral of the story' speech to parents whose children I taught. I'd be rich if I had a dollar for every adult i meet that said they played or took lessons when younger, but they wanted to quit, & their parents let them. Now they wish they didn't quit. I know your story is a little different, but there is similarity. We can't always see the value in an experience when we're young.

Moog synthesizer, Tenor saxophone, Triangle., Conga drums. Note: The African congas ( were called the talking drum) were so communicative to the enslaved and scared hell out of the slave owners, they were outlawed. The brothers could communicate messages to each other just like speech.

The first Earth Wind & Fire album I bought was Gratitude. I was truly blessed to have experienced that music! It's hard to concentrate on one aspect of their band, but as Earth Wind & Fire matured I really started to like the vocals.

Bongos are a pair of small connected hand drums that are placed between you knees to play. This guy is playing Congas (Congo), he played Timbales after the congas.

This a fairly recent version of this song (post-Maurice White era). I'm going to throw you a curve; There are three types of saxophone, none of which can be mistaken for a trumpet! Soprano sax is what Kenny G plays and it resembles a clarinet. The alto sax that you see here and the big baritone sax that you see most often in big bands.

Terrific live version...not their best. "Gratitude" album 1975 was what WE grew with as their best live version. Of course, the original Ramsey Lewis cut with Maurice....

It is so sad they don't teach "music apprection" in school anymore... It was one of my elementary school classes and the first thing we were taught in that class was identifying different instruments and their history. There are 6 types of saxophones, sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass. the little triangle instrument is called a "titfer" part of the percussions.

This is Okay, but this is EWF without Maurice White. For me that's like seeing the Jackson 5 without Michael. A big step down. Only about 4 of the guys who recorded this song are there. You should hear the original studio version of this. This is not even the same song. After Maurice stopped performing due to illness and his eventual death the band became Earth Wind & Fire, Incorporated. Still a great show but not the same at all. All the old band members have been replaced (except Verdine the bassist) and I have not heard much to go "wow" about in a looooooong time. You can always go back a play those keyboards man. It's never too late.

Great video but not the classic group by far... This does not have the production value of their concerts.. Talk about production, they were the first band to incorporate magic into their live performances hiring the great magician Doug Henning to set it up.
