YES!!!! "Hamrer Hippyer" is one f my favorites. The Live (Lifa) version of Krigskaldr is really cool. You will see the rings of metal smashed against a metal plate to create a percussive element. Human bones clicked against each other.... a mix of a Norse language and English telling a story of peace, war, revenge and peace again. I love this band. Saw them In NYC and it was an intense theatrical experience. Thank you again for your thoughtful dissection of all the music you listen to. Please more, Heilung!!!!!!!

Me when I realised I'm only 88% highlander. *The Vikings entered the chat* Nice to see something different here. This song is based on the poem known as 'the Norwegian rune poem.' The Norwegian rune poem gives a complete description of all 16 runes of the younger Futhark, also commonly known as the 'Viking runes.' The language they used here is Old Norse, used by the Vikings in the Viking Age. Modern language that's most closely related to Old Norse is Icelandic, although it has significantly changed over the years. I missed them playing at my hometown in York. If you have the opportunity to see these guys live, go man. The whole show is like a spiritual experience.

Nice! Heilung, finally! You need to get to some of the live performances. "In Maidjan" is maybe the best cross-section of their sound overall, "Krigsgaldr" if you want something focused more around Maria Franz' lovely vocals. Both long, but that hasn't stopped you before, right? lol PS, I'm sure you heard, but BAND-MAID uploaded two more live performance videos. Every time I hear one of them I'm stunned at how good they are live. Every damn time. PPS, it's pretty awesome living in a world were we can go from Heilung to BAND-MAID in one comment.

Oh man, I think Heilung is the only band I can get more excited about than Nightwish. I've been an old world ancient religion nut since I was about 7 years old, and the way they bring Germanic culture to life makes me emotional to see. Every performance from them is a gift, and whether people appreciate them or not, they will always make an impression.
@SteinarHusby

Heilung's live recording of Alfadhirhaiti is heavily recommended, though maybe as a finale after Krigsgaldr and In Majdan? And as other mentioned, Wardruna's "Helvegen" with Aurora is a closely related experience, and Wardruna's latest two singles/songs "Grá" and "Lyfabjerg" are also exceptional. The latter's music video was filmed an hour away from me back in may (poor weather, fits the song perfectly), so I like the music video. Edit: any Wardruna song reaction is better with the translated lyrics available, so you know what the song is about. "Helvegen" hits much better when you know what it's about.

14:35 All their stuff is very "primal" - almost all instruments that would have been found millennia ago, just amplified (and in some cases, distorted and looped) to create a fuller sound. They've said that their music, at least in the context of their live shows, is meant to put the listener at ease by the end, though the journey might be turbulent at times (hence the name "Heilung", literally being "healing"). So their stuff can get heavier, or otherwise more overtly intense - in particular the entirety of Alfadhirhaiti, and parts of Krigsgaldr. Their songs also generally tend to fall into the territory of almost being more like performance art, with rituals and chanting - most notably, Hakkersgaldr and Futhorck (the latter often being performed in the middle of another song, Fylgija Ear, in their live shows). I'd recommend Krigsgaldr as your next song to watch, which offers a fairly comprehensive look at their style, and Alfadhirhaiti, for a sound I like to think of as "Heavy Wood". Both from their Lifa concert, live at Castlefest 2017.

The word Heilung is a german word that means "Healing". The german "ei" is roughly pronounced roughly like the "-igh" in the word "High", but slightly faster. So it would be more like "Highlung" instead of "Hey-lung".

You are a great music analyst. It is a pleasure listening to your thoughts as you experience the music. I am a musician myself, and I can tell when someone dissects the musical composition and analyses the form from a position of knowledge. I love this group. Please react to more. Maria Franz is such an awesome vocalist. You don't see her full vocal talent in this song but check out In Maidjan and you will see more of what she can do. Also check out the other band she sings in called Euzen. They are more modern alternative rock. Specially the live performances. This is one of my favourites kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bKqheJiCltfJeXU.html That didgeridoo sound is actually a male vocalist doing throat singing. This song, Norupo, is the Norwegian Rune Poem. The name is an abbreviation. It is the rune poem just sung to music. Basically the Runic Alphabet in a poem. The Runes are of the Younger Futhark, each in a poetic line. Here is the original poem plus the translation. The original language is Old Norse ᚠ Fé vældr frænda róge; føðesk ulfr í skóge. ᛁ Ís kǫllum brú bræiða; blindan þarf at læiða. ᛅ Ár er gumna góðe; get ek at ǫrr var Fróðe. Translation of Norwegian Rune PoemEdit ᚠ Fe Wealth is a source of discord among kinsmen; the wolf lives in the forest. ᚢ Ur Dross comes from bad iron; the reindeer often races over the frozen snow. ᚦ Thurs Giant causes anguish to women; misfortune makes few men cheerful. ᚬ As Estuary is the way of most journeys; but a scabbard is of swords. ᚱ Reidh Riding is said to be the worst thing for horses; Reginn forged the finest sword. ᚴ Kaun Ulcer is fatal to children; death makes a corpse pale. ᚼ Hagall Hail is the coldest of grain; Christ created the world of old. ᚾ Naudhr Constraint gives scant choice; a naked man is chilled by the frost. ᛁ Isa Ice we call the broad bridge; the blind man must be led. ᛅ Ar Plenty is a boon to men; I say that Frodi was generous. ᛋ Sol Sun is the light of the world; I bow to the divine decree. ᛏ Tyr Tyr is a one-handed god; often has the smith to blow. ᛒ Bjarkan Birch has the greenest leaves of any shrub; Loki was fortunate in his deceit. ᛘ Madhr Man is an augmentation of the dust; great is the claw of the hawk. ᛚ Logr A waterfall is a River which falls from a mountain-side; but ornaments are of gold. ᛦ Yr Yew is the greenest of trees in winter; it is wont to crackle when it burns.

Hi Chase ~ Happy Wednesday. ☺ Being one of the people who requested Heilung, I am so happy you were willing to give them a go, and liked it!! I'm sure there are others who have been fans longer & are more familiar with them that can answer your questions. I know (from what I've read) that their songs are based on ancient texts & rituals and their music is supposed to BE a ritual. Heilung means 'healing'. Runes are predominant in their symbolism & work. In the video, they're in a 'sacred circle' and are creating different Runes with their bodies and the antlers. ~ A lot of people seem to be kinda creeped out by them. I was a bit shocked initially, but only because I'd never heard anything quite like it before. However, the pagan & shaman in me was immediately drawn in to their 'world' & taken back to a time when people were more connected to the Earth. ~ Personally, (and from what I've listened to) this song is pretty 'tame'. ☺ If you do more by them in the future, check out something live. ~ Thank you for another great reaction and analysis! Stay safe...and have a damn good day.😁

The man behind the mixing and mastering is Christopher Juul, the mostly non-singing member of Heilung, he has been in several Danish folk bands and is probably the go to guy for production on acoustic that relies heavily on percussion, and Danish folk music is also heavy on strings and flute so it's no wonder that it is (if such a thing exists) perfectly mixed.

Heilung defines themselves as amplified history. They get inspired in potential very primal sounds and music-making, and still surviving sounds of many indigenous cultures across the globe, with a heavy load of modern ambience and eerie sounds to create this atmosphere. I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 10,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and the year 2019, they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. I recommend this video of her concert. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npdypq56tZrZiYE.html Some curiosities. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. The male singer with the deep voice is a great tattoo artist and very professional. The bones the girl plays with are human bones and sometimes they have had problems in the countries of the tour to introduce them through the border from the country where the concert was held. I think the letter is a description of the 16 letters of the new futhark or new runic alphabet and the description of each of the runes and their meaning Norupo is composed around the ancient runic poem with the name ′′ Norway's rune poem. "The poem was preserved in an 18th century copy of a now lost 18th century manuscript and gives a complete description of all younger Futhark runes.

YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE Heilung!!!!!!!!! I am so happy that you have finally listened to a song form them. I so long for you to react to a live performance. They are so different....... really different from anything else. I love the Hu. I love the departure from anything European that they bring. I love the traditional Mongolian instruments. But there is something so special and different with Heilung. It is trans like at times, Shamanistic, atavistic, tribalistic and artistic. These guys succeed, I think, in their endeavor to be Amplified History. Thank YOU!!!!

Heilung formed as an experimental folk music band that specifically performs these Barbarian-era Northern Germanic and Norse Tribe type songs. There's an entire live concert of theirs on KZfaq where you get to see the entire band perform, and yes, it's a lot more people than just a few that were in this video. I think there's like 6 or 7 of them altogether.

First of all, thanks for checking out Heilung :D Their Music is not always as calm as this one, they do focus on some sort of meditational / spiritual atmosphere, but they play around with that alot. Don´t want to spoil it, so just check out their stuff. I`d suggest to go on with the Song "In Maidjan", it is the opening Ritual to Heilungs Concerts and shows some changing vibes through different parts, sending you on a journey . And make sure to get the "LIFA" version from 2017, Heilung life is quite an experience. Regarding the language: The lyrics are inspired or taken from Things like Runestones, Swords or other artefacts from the bronce- and ironage. Gathered together from all around northern Europe. There are probably some pagans around here who can tell you more about it than me... If not yet, they will come.

Other bands of this kind that you would probably like are Wardruna (Norwegian band, made music for the TV show Vikings), Cultus Ferox (German, mostly instrumental with some chanting in old germanic), and Garmarna (Swedish folk rock, mixes with modern music, sings in Swedish). I'd recommend Wardruna - Helvegen featuring Aurora, Cultus Ferox - Tamfanae or Mutter Erde, and Garmarna - Herr Mannelig, or Över Gränsen.

It is Old West Norse, called Old Icelandic by the time this was written. It is the old Icelandic rune song, for teaching the Younger Futhark. I do not know whether the song was written before Christianization and then changed for that one line referencing Christ in it, or if it was written after conversion. Basically, it's the alphabet song for long-dead Icelanders :) Norupo is less "exciting" than songs like In Maijan and others. Another to look at would be Fylgja Ear / Futhorc from the Lifa live recording (whole concert is on YT). Maria pulls some intense vocals and the whole crew really come together on those especially. Galgaldr and Svanrand are my two favorites from the same Album that Norupo is on, called Futha. Also, Krigsgaldr off of Othan and the live version from Lifa is one of their top tunes.

This is the NOrwegian RUne POem, it's referenced in the title of the song.
@flensdude
@flensdude 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewnewling2707 Although while the written poem is copied from a 13th century manuscript from Norway, the lyrics are sung with a modern Icelandic pronunciation. You can clearly hear this when they pronounce ther word _fjall_ , which in this song sounds something like "fya-tehl". In Old Norse there should be no "t" sound in the word _fjall_ . Also, the poem itself might be a lot older. However it cannot be before the people from this region first encountered Christians since it makes refrences to Jesus Christ ( _kristr_ ) when they are talking about the Hagall rune ᚼ. Because nobody really knows the origin of this poem, or who authored it, it's not really right to say that this poem is Old Norwegian in origin. It might as well have been a poem that was imported to Norway from elsewhere, but this particular poem only became recorded in Norway.
@flensdude
@flensdude 3 жыл бұрын
@In Actis Esto Volucris Actually you are the one who is badly mistaken. Calling the language(s) spoken in Scandinavia categorically for Norse or "donsk tunga" at around the 13th century today is extremely vague and does not at all take into account the dialectal differences that historically started to emerge. Old Norse could by this time be divided into Old West Norse, which included Old Norwegian and Old Icelandic, and Old East Norse, which included Old Swedish and Old Danish. Some of the regional differences between the two language groups at this time, Old West and Old East Norse, is that Old East Norse added a "j" sound for the first person personal pronoun in nominative (cf. Modern Danish _jeg_ and Modern Swedish _jag_ ), whereas Old West Norse did not undertake such a sound change at this time (cf. Modern Norwegian Nynorsk _eg_ ). Another change is the loss of diphtongs in Old East Norse (cf. Modern Danish and Modern Swedish _sten_ and Modern Icelandic _steinn_ and Modern Norwegian Nynorsk _stein_ ). With some of the known regional changes that happened to Old Norse, it is very obvious that the text in this song is written in Old West Norse, even more precisely Old Norwegian. You can tell because the text still has diphtongs, but some of the words have already lost the word-initial _h_ like in _ræinn_ (original form was _hreinn_ ).
@flensdude

@In Actis Esto Volucris You're again sorely mistaken. If anyone here is to apologise, it's most certainly you. Especially since you're so overconfident and rude, yet ignorant on the topic. Not that I personally care whether you apologise or not, but it's weird seeing you demand apologies after your awkward display of social behaviour. If you want to know more about Old Norse and how it evolved into the different languages today, I suggest you look up *Dr. Jackson Crawford, an Old Norse specialist who has a Ph.D in Scandinavian Studies* . He has collaborated with Disney on the film Frozen and with Ubisoft on the upcoming video game Assassin's Creed Valhalla, published works related to Old Norse and translated many of the Old Norse manuscripts into English. This guy certainly is more of an expert in this field than both you and me. He has plenty of KZfaq videos on his channel, and two that literally deal with this topic that you're being confused about. You can follow these links: - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZyFlap9qJ29h58.html (Timeline of Old Norse and its descendant languages) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNBln5li38DWdHk.html (Grammatical differences in Old West Norse and Old East Norse) *To address some of the points you made though:* Not only are you relying on Wikipedia articles (da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norr%C3%B8nt and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Norse ) written by one or more unknown authors, so the reliability is certainly sketchy despite your overconfidence. But you're also literally ignoring the texts in those Wikipedia articles that clearly state the things I'm saying, that there were already regional differences in the language by the 13th century. There's even a map in those Wikipedia articles stating that a division in Old Norse into an Old West Norse and Old East Norse variant happened in the early 10th century, and the English version of the page even has its own section dedicated to the different dialects of the language (link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Norse#Dialects ). It would help your case to properly read the articles before you make your point, otherwise you just come off as either some illiterate asshole with a big ego problem or an internet troll. Your pick. Also just because you can find some Old Icelandic law text that states that the regional Norse languages were just one identical language with no differences (donsk tunga), that does not make it a historical fact. The Old Icelandic text in question is most certainly not correct about its contemporary history, or it's simplifying the topic, both things not being uncommon for many medieval texts and manuscripts from that time.
@flensdude
@flensdude 3 жыл бұрын
@In Actis Esto Volucris I think I know now why exactly you're so adamant at saying that Old Norse manuscripts unanimously called their language(s) _donsk tunga_ , despite nobody here disputing the fact that you can find such manuscripts ― I mean, I completely agree that they called their language(s) donsk tunga. However, you read the original comment to this thread and saw that the person said, _"It is Old West Norse, called Old Icelandic by the time this was written."_ and you thought that what the person tried to say was that the people _in the 13th century_ actively called their language Old Icelandic when the Old Norwegian Rune poem was written. However, that's not at all what the original comment says. It says that it is _we_ in the modern times that would call this text Old West Norse, or more specifically Old Norwegian to be precise. Somehow that flew right past your head. It's fucking brilliant. One misreading, and you got sent on a holy crusade to name call others for their "ignorance". Yet the way you've been writing makes it sound like you just found that there were regional differences in the language after I pointed that out to you. Just marble at this genius phrase of yours from your first comment: _"There is no such thing as Old Icelandic!"_ It's true the regional characteristics between the different dialects of the Old Norse populations were not something that were particularly pointed out by the peoples themselves, nor did they try to distinguish their dialects from one another by giving them names like Old Icelandic. But again that doesn't mean there were no such things as distinct dialects. The term Old Icelandic is what we use to differentiate the Old Norse variant written and spoken by Icelanders from Old Norwegian, Old Danish and Old Swedish. It's sort of the same case with English. Even though we all call the language English, you can both hear and see distinct features between the different English dialects in how they are spoken and written. But nobody would stop and deny others from making distinctions between the different dialects. You wouldn't say, "There's no such thing as American English! It's only called English by all law manuscripts in the world! Even the French distinctly call it English! You must therefore call it English, and don't you dare call it American!" However, this is precisely what you are doing with Old Norse, I would argue. You honestly either have extremely little experience with the linguistics surrounding modern day studies of the Old Norse language(s) with an ego problem to "prove" what little knowledge you have of the language(s), or you're just intentionally flaming. Either way, you're being a huge asshole about it in the end.

Heilung is amazing. I love how their music is simultaneously calming and unnerving, and Maria Franz's vocals are just incredible. I just wish the Alphabet song I'd learnt in elementary school had sounded as cool as this. That's basically what this is, incidentally: the Old Norse Alphabet song. The first word of each stanza is the name of one of the Younger Futhark runes, and since they're given in order it acts as a mnemonic device to remember the runes and their sequence. There are multiple similar Rune Poems from various old Germanic languages; in fact, another one of Heilung's songs is the Old English rune poem.

So happy that you've given this a shot! Couple things here about this; They're singing a Rune Poem. It's like the ABC's but for those Viking Runes you've probably seen in like God of War with the letters that look like little trees. The hard start of a stansa is the Rune they're saying, then what that rune means. at 9:52 it comes in close as the woman raises her hands, they say Sol, or Sul, rune for the sun. Then Tyr, god of judgement. after the alt singer finishes and it zooms out, Bjarken is the rune, then stansa. All of the music is supposed to be ONLY from things that they would have had during the time period, personal voice and instruments you make! I don't know the language they're singing but it's amazing to me and speaks deeply to me also
