This song is based on the Norwegian Runic Poem, which, as in the Icelandic Runic Poem, names all the runes of the young futhark accompanied by a stanza alluding to the name of each of the runes. There is also a third Runic Poem: the Anglo-Saxon. Runic poems are believed to have served as a mnemonic tool for remembering the names of the runes and their order in the alphabet. It is an important compilation of popular culture of the time, comparable to old English sayings, Gnomonic poetry, and Old Norse poetry. The Norwegian runic poem, written in Old Norse, has been preserved in a 17th century copy of a destroyed 13th century manuscript. This poem appears in skaldic meter. And it has the following structure: The first line of each stanza is a phrase of the following type: "name of the rune + copula + X", where X is an attribute to the name of the rune, followed by a second rhymed line that provides some information somehow related to the previous sentence. In this poem and in Icelandic, all the runes of the young futhark appear in the same order. The names of the 16 runes and their order is as follows: Fé, Úr, Þurs, Óss, Ræið, Kaun, Hagall, Nauðr, Ís, Ár, Sól, Týr, Bjarkan, Maðr, Lögr, Ýr ᚠ - Wealth causes dispute between relatives. The wolf inhabits the forest. ᚢ - All dross comes from bad iron. Reindeer often run on frozen snow. ᚦ - A troll causes disease in women. Few men find joy in misfortune. ᚬ - The end of the river is the path for most trips. And a scabbard is the fate of swords. ᚱ - It is said that riding is the worst for the horse. Reginn forged the best sword. ᚴ - The ulcer is a curse for children. Death makes a man pale. ᚼ - Hail is the coldest grain. Kristr created the world of yesteryear. ᚾ - Anguish leaves little choice. A naked man is chilled by frost. ᛁ - Ice we call a wide bridge. A blind man needs guidance. ᛅ - Abundance is a blessing to men. I say that Fróde was generous. ᛋ - The sun is the light of the world. I bow down to all that is sacred. ᛏ - Tyr is a one-handed god. Often a blacksmith must forge. ᛒ - A birch has the greenest leaves. Loki forged times of deception. ᛘ - Man is the product of dust. Strong is the claw of a hawk. ᛚ - A waterfall is a river that falls from the mountain. All treasures are gold. ᛦ - Yew is the greenest of winter trees. It tends to crunch when burned. Male voice lyrics are names and words from German, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish (still unconfirmed). Uunia runus sigurd. Fähig ani regina gunda.

@doggone Except the costumes are historically correct for Nordic bronze age, and what do you mean "if they even had music" are you serious? So, the cow horns, lyres, drums and pipes didn't clue you in to the fact that they had music? The fact that we have folk music that has been passed down since the Viking age didn't clue you in? In fact, we DO have music written down. The Wooden tablet from Denmark was a song recorded in the 14th century after being passed down, just like the many poems and sagas. You seem strangely mad for no good reason. You should probably keep your uninformed opinions to yourself and just let people enjoy great music.

@doggone There's plenty of examples of music passed down from Ancient Scandinavian culture. I mean, they LITERALLY INVENTED like 12 different instruments that are still used today. A quick goggle search might have saved you the trouble of this comment, tbh.

Pretty much all peoples at least started off as tribal. It’s one of the most basic human forms of government and life style, but a very affective one. Small communities using resources from the land around them and fallowing the resources, needing to be in touch with nature to survive. I personally find it really beautiful and just a part of human nature to take care of our communities and the land that provides for us.

Stones are called "les menhirs de Monteneuf" and are located near the Broceliande forest in the North of France (Brittany region). The Anglo Saxons are themselves Germanic (Angles came from Denmark, Saxons from northern Germany) and arrived in Britain still firmly pagan, hence the use of the west Germanic names for the gods (Odin = Wotan in German and Woden in English) but after roughly 150 years adopted Christianity from the remants of the Roman population that they had conquered. So basically when the Vikings showed up the English aristocracy had become full Christian and many of their subjects but most anglo saxons still knew a lot about their pagan religion and many of the lower classes and more remote living smaller lords probably still practiced it or at least many parts of it. Even as late as the 8th century (within which the first viking invasions occurred during the last couple of years) some English kings still linked their lineage to Woden (Odin) as their forefather

Some rituals seems to have universal appeal. Tribal groups all over the earth used local animal skins, drumming, fire circles, the natural resources around them to survive and explain the wonder of seasons. This is humanity in its most elemental form and it’s beautiful on every part of the globe. From Northern Europe to the Indigenous peoples of America, to the many tribes across Africa, Asia, etc etc. Humanity is magick. And we all have lost our connection to what makes us the same and what binds us- Earth and her many gifts. ❤

We were once much like any other tribal society that honored the lands that offered food, water, a place to build shelter. Somewhere along the line "progress" and greed crept in like a silent serpent in the night and we are left with our legacy on this earth being death and destruction without thought or mercy. Heilung gives sound to long lost music and words. What is presented here is a sung version of the Old Norse Rune Poem, i.e. a verse meant for people to learn or remember the Nordic runes of a time even before the viking age. It is Old Norse in the Younger Futhark rune version, Old Norse being a root language of the modern Norwegian language. For people interested in this, the Old Norse language and mythology, there is right now probably no one better out there than Dr. Jackson Crawford. Here (below) is his video about the Old Norse Rune Poem, which he reads in Old Norse and gives an English translation. Heilung also has another Old High German (an even older language) / Old Norse song called Traust, which also deserves a mention. Jackson Crawford: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdKYksuFl9LFgqM.html

it is completely understandable that this kind of "old" spiritistic thinking and feeling is difficult for Americans with a comparatively very young history to understand, except for the "healing" of the remaining Native Inians. No pure Viking music the music and sounds of the band are based on Archaeological Historical Historical records and rock paintings and carvings as well as traditions from Norse/Gothic/Germanic and Celtic rituals going back to the end of the last Ice Age in Europe. For people with Celtic Norse roots these have deep spiritual meaning and can open mind Putting into a trance that can lead the open mind back to the womb of the mother from which all life originates. In the Gothic/Germanic Celtic mythology, the mother is the beginning of all and is also depicted as a white hind and therefore every woman is considered holy only women egg A direct connection to the mother could only be women. The male shamans were the droids. They were considered white men and leaders and were subordinate to the high priestesses when her children.. it would be interesting what an American native would have to say about that...
