This song was a message from Michel Berger to his lost love Veronique Sanson another french singer. He was so devastated she left him in 1972 for an American singer Stephen Stills (yeah ! The one of Buffalo Springfield et Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young) that he wrote this song and ask to Françoise Hardy to sung it. That's the reason why it's a sad song...but what an incredible song !

Great idea! It’s actually a song written by Gainsbourg (can’t remember him performing it). But there are very nice covers, like Jimmy Somerville’s, which could make a perfect dual reaction. So F. Hardy vs J. Somerville sounds very promising!

@@tixien Yes, Serge wrote the French Lyrics. Françoise loved an instrumental track recorded in 1967 by Arnold Goland called "It hurts to say goodbye". But in fact, she didn't know that it was the instrumental cover of the original 1966 jazzy song sung by Margaret Whiting .The song was covered in swedish by Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

The song is by Berger who thought to his former girl friend, but the spoken preamble is by F Hardy. The whole thing gives a song of desperate love to her husband Jacques Dutronc who was not a model. They lived and live separately, she in Paris, he in Corsica. They never divorce.

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard ... and still I don't understand a word of the lyrics. It must be her voice ... It's like I understand even if I don't know the words. I became a fan of hers just a couple of years ago when I bought a Greatest hits-compilation of hers, and I loved every song on it. Now I have bought lots of her albums. She's fantastic!

An icon. Best showcase for her voice are “mon amie la rose” from her 60s output, and in the 80s “Partir quand même”. As suggested in the comments, “Comment te dire adieu” is also great, poppy, very Gainsbourg in style and superbly covered by Jimmy Somerville.

Absolutely right. Tbh she wrote so many beautiful songs (and so many more written for her) that it’s hard to pick one, but her early work is so delicate and subtle. Mon amie la rose is incredible, Le premier bonheur du jour would be my second suggestion (but again, hard to pick).

Very emotional... Françoise, born 1944 was very popular in France in the 60s and 70s. Her voice was unbelievable, a sweet artist, a real smart person. One of the most beautiful singer in France at that time with Sylvie Vartan, France Gall, Brigitte Bardot, Sheila, Véronique Sanson. Johnny was with Sylvie and Dutronc was with Françoise in the 60-70ties. I think they aren't divorced but they no longer live together. Musically speaking, I prefer the 70s period. A Era of innovation, modernity, stand up with strings, piano, bass. When you hear her songs , you can imagine you're in the same world than VÉRONIQUE or FRANCE. Golden years. I think she could have been a top model. But Françoise has a eternal soul. ❤️never forget Françoise Hardy 💓and long life to her. THANK YOU for this song Derek. 🙏

Wow, wow, wow! What a huge surprise dear Dereck! You made my day! I’ve been waiting for this moment since I followed you. Françoise is my favourite French female singer. Love her repertoire and ton of voice since her first record in 1962. This song is iconic and a classic. She did an English rendition of it. A bunch of great artists covered the song Michel Berger, France Gall, Julie Pietri, etc. Here are my suggestions of great songs she recorded: Tant de belles choses, All over the world, Le danger, Voilà, La maison où j'ai grandi, J'écoute de la musique saoule, Point, Dix heures du soir en été, Tirez pas sur l'ambulance, Partir quand même, Juke box, To the end (duet with Damon Albarn), My beautiful deamon (duet with Ben Christophers), Tamalou, Soleil (her Spanish version called Sol is awesome), and hundred many more.

One of my all time favorite songs. I can listen to this song forever. It never gets old. Written by MBerger (except for the spoken intro which Francoise Hardy), it's written as if she was leaving a message on an answering machine. This song and collaboration was a reboot of her career. She'd been very famous in the 60s in a different style of songs. She's had a cult following and inspired some singers like Etienne Daho. She's a fascinating singer. Really worth looking at more of her songs. Glad you found this song. It's a true gem.

I could advise you to listen to Mon amie la rose but the most important is the strengh of the lyrics in this song but anyway listen to "L' amour en privé" written by Serge Gainsbourg. The music is amazing.

It is very romantic and kind of desperate song. The last words spoken "peut-être" (maybe) mean that she does not believe herself in a happy ending. She sends a message in a bottle for the sea to decide. Dramatic !

It's funny how in a few minutes you manage to feel the same thing French people feel about Françoise Hardy! There's something fascinating about her, even though her voice is not the strongest. There's a melancoly, a sensibility. She's Jacques Dutronc's wife. Their son is a musician/singer too. Can you imagine growing up with such parents! Icons!

Not the best placed to speak about Françoise Hardy, but I agree with you, she has a voice that you could listen until the end of the night. Another very beautiful title of her "Mon amie la rose" (the version of Natacha Atlas is also sublime). As you quote Dominique A, I take the opportunity to advise you some titles of him : "Le courage des oiseaux" (an excellent live version) , "Twenty-two bar" (his first big public success) , "Eléor"" , Rendez-nous la lumière" , "Immortels" , "Se Décentrer" ......... His discography is quite rich, chiseled texts (many very beautiful songs) ....

Loved Francoise Hardy since I saw her in concert in the 1960s. She had a hit in the UK with All Over The World (Dan le Monde Entier) in 1966, and I think could have had a big international career if she hadn't been such a shy, home loving woman. Check out a couple of my favourite songs of hers: Star (cover of the Janis Ian song, which I like better than the original) and Tant de Belles Choses.
