To give some insight on a verse of the song: he sings "Ce soir la femme du torrero dormira sur ses deux oreilles". In French, as you may know, "dormir sur ses deux oreilles" means to have a really good sleep. But he uses this expression to refer to the barbaric tradition in which the torrero cuts the bulls ears' off at the end of the fight, while he's still alive, to take them as a trophy.

I wish the translation were more accurate and reflected Francis Cabrel’s use of french language, there’s a pun with « la femme du torero dormira sur ses deux oreilles »: when the torero wins the bullfight, sometimes he’s allowed to cut the bull’s ears and to keep it as a trophy. When someone quietly sleeps, there’s a french turn of phrase saying « he/she is sleeping on both ears » see what I mean ? the bull here would like to win, cut the torero’s ears and give it to his wife so she could feel what that cruelty really means, probably the most powerfull verse of that song.

Unfortunately the translations are often bad... However I interpret the original sentence differently: the bullfighter's wife can sleep serenely on her two ears without worrying about those of the bull which were mutilated.

You're right but, when translating a song you have to follow the music, no time for long explanations such as this one. Translating from a language to another is not only mechanically replacing words with others.

@@jfrancobelge Yes, it’s obvious that translation and explanations are two very different things. Here in our comments (there is another elsewhere) we discuss among ourselves the interpretation we give to the original sentence, in French, because not everyone understands it the same. I was a little hasty in mentioning the bad translations because yes that is not the case here, it could not be better. But I still see a lot of bad translations. Apart from special expressions or untranslatable puns, there are very simple vocabulary errors, but also errors of meaning. The translator doesn't know enough French to understand the true meaning of the sentence, so he writes what he understood and it doesn't match. Well, they do what they can, I would certainly do less well 😌

Eh, mais vous parlez vachement bien français !!! :) I like Francis Cabrel very much, his melodies are all kinda similar (he even jokes about it in concerts when people start to cheer when they recognize the first notes of a song, he says "Oh, calmez-vous, y'en a beaucoup qui commencent pareil" ;) ). I love Francis Cabrel and all his songs since my early childhood, i'm not from camargue, so bullfighting ( corrida) it's not a tradition for me, I even never go to one, nonetheless this is cultural tradition and I truly think judging whithout any understanding of all the how and why is not a good thing... I'm not for torturing any animals on earth, maybe we should just listen each other before judging

Yes Cabrel, he is a great artist and poet. Great song as always ,very sensitive and full of meaning As for bullfighting, I was born in a country where this horrible thing is considered an art, a tradition . I have always hated it, but to be honest it's (as far as I know) the only country where a part of the “show” is done by a group of guys, with ridiculous costumes, of course, who face the bull in single file and bare hands (idiots). It takes place in Portugal and they are called forcados. I'm sure it should be easily found on YT for those who are curious.

I saw bullfighting once in Southern France, I was 12 and my parents took me with them (!). I threw up. The tradition goes back to the Mithraic religion in the Roman Empire. A bull was sacrificed during their rituals. Another thing: the lancer (picador) horses. They wear protective gear, except on their belly. Quite often, the bull is strong enough to bring the horse down and eviscerate it.

Do you know what's the stupidest thing about bullfighting in France? French law punishes animal cruelty with 3 years in prison, and if the animal dies 5 years in prison. Except... in a region (the one near Spain). This means that by torturing a bull to death you can be either a hero or a criminal a few kilometers away. Vive la France !

I just don't understand why bullfights are allowed in that part of France along the Spanish border. Some say it's to preserve traditions. But do we have to preserve bad and crual traditions? If so, we'd still burn women as witches and watch gladiators fight to death. This is even more insane if you think that a good chunk of Spain neighboring southwestern France is Catalonia, where they've banned bullfights. But is Catalonia really Spain? That's another (political) issue that I'll let others debate.

Ton français est vraiment bon, better than my english tbh. V.O. = Version originale (original version i think u get it). "Ce soir la femme du torero dormira sur ses deux oreilles" is translated into "Tonight, the bullfighter's wife will sleep loudly" a more literal translation could be "Tonight, the bullfighter's wife will sleep on both ears", this makes echo with the fact that bullfigther get the tail and both ears of the bull after the "fight". [in french "to sleep on both ears" means "sleeping loudly" (u probably guess it)].

Small mistake in translation: the torero's wife won't sleep soundly but litteraly on her husband's ears (reference to the bull's ears that are cut off and given to the torero as a trophy).

Très belle et très dure chanson que je n'ai jamais pu écouter sans pleurer ! A bas la corrida, stop à la cruauté et la maltraitance sur les animaux, torturer un animal n'est pas un spectacle ! merci pour cette réaction et merci aussi à Cabrel d'en avoir fait une chanson
