This is by far my favorite one hit wonder. This song originated over 200 years ago, and “Black Betty”, in that time, was a particular person’s musket. However, Black Betty was also a kind of chant, sung by Black slaves, while working in the fields. Black Betty was also a drink, and Black Betty was, at one time, a name, given by the slaves, for a large bull whip. Later, various people made different musical versions out of the song, from it’s first recording. This is my favorite version ever done. In spite of its origins, He sings it like Black Betty was a woman. That’s how I like to think about it, and it makes the most sense to me, from the “Black Betty had a child”, and, “She said it were not mine”. You can see it in his eyes, in the video. Love the whole vibe in the video. Awesome reaction, by the way! Yours is a great example of why I love watching reaction videos of Black Betty. ❤

The original Audio version is about at 4 minutes long with a longer guitar solo. You can find a compilation of all their songs on KZfaq. Quite a few hidden "jams" (pun intended) in that collection! UNFORTUNATELY, they didn't get much commercial success. This was probably due to coming out during the Disco Era. They only had 2 Albums: "Ram Jam" (1977) and "Portrait of the Young Artist as a Young Ram" (1978) At some point, Germany (of all places) compiled BOTH albums into CD titled "The Very Best of Ram Jam". Just ordered it on Amazon for $13 CAD (so $9-$10 USD?) the other day. SO excited!

I got this from another KZfaq commenter: (Myke’s younger brother) That guy dancing in the background,far left, Myke Scavone, is the actually lead singer of the group...long dark hair, doing back ups once in a while......Bill Barlett sang that song on the recording before Myke joined the band. How do I know this? Myke is my older brother! :D The song was first made popular by Lead Belly in the 40's but it's been around long before that sung on chain gangs. Some say it is about a musket, some say it's about a whip, some say it's about a hooker. The song is that old so somewhere things got lost in the translation. I believe the location of that video was Myke's then girlfriends house( now long time wife), Margie's mom's house in New Jersey. Myke is now doing prison ministry as a prison pastor.

The original recording has a 24 bar solo section which is hard AF to play, but it's not in this video. My band is working on this song and it's both difficult because of the strange timings and tempo changes, and very fun to play! Oh, and the song has a fascinating history. Definitely worth a Google.

Black Betty was their only hit and definitely their best record. Most of the rest of what they did is decent hard blues rock, but not spectacular. The album version includes a long instrumental break tht was left out of the video. Part of that is that their release was actually a remix of a recording by Bill Barnett's previous band, Starstruck. The song itself is an old folk song that can be traced to at least a Texas prison work chant, and probably a British army marching cadence (although not, to my knowledge, clearly documented. Barnett learned it from Leadbelly's recording and added the second and third verses Bartlett previously played guitar with another one-hit wonder act, the Lemon Pipers, whose only hit was a semi-psychedelic bubblegum song called Green Tambourine. All reports are that they didn't want to do that song, and from what I saw on a TV performance that's made its way to KZfaq, it's probably true. The rest of Ram Jam were Myke Scavone (the regular lead singer, who can be seen dancing next to the drums), Howie Blauvelt (bass), Pete Charles (drums), and Jimmy Santoro (seen playing rhythm guitar in the video, but not actually part of the band until their second album). The band on the Black Betty recording were Barnett (guitar and vocal), Tom Kurtz (Guitar), David Goldflies (bass) and David Fleeman (drums). The house in the video is on Long Island and, if I recall correctly, was where Scavone's girlfriend lived. (Wikipedia is your friend.)

@@mitchdickson254 just so you know...hip-hop/rap music came out of the Bronx NYC in 1973. DJ Cool Herc was one of the originators. Ram Jam didn’t record Black Betty until 1977, although it was a song written by Lead Belly in the 1930’s. Basically I’m saying you don’t know your ass from a hole in the ground. You’re just a lonely stupid troll...
@rogerroger6813
@rogerroger6813 3 жыл бұрын
@@bob5074 just to let you in on a couple of things. First Leadbelly didn't write the song. Second Ram Jam never recorded Black Betty. Bill Bartlett's previous band Star Struck recorded the song years earlier (the extended version). Bartlett at the request of a Japanese business man, who wanted the song for a commercial.He then went into the studio and reworked the song that you now know as the Ram Jam version. The only person in the video whose actually in the band besides Bill is the bass player. Whose house the video was made. I was told he paid the members of Star Struck 3000 dollars apiece for their rights to the song.

@@superstardeejay2468 How do you know it was an original? Just as an FYI: "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him. Some sources claim it is one of Lead Belly's many adaptations of earlier folk material;[1] in this case, an 18th-century marching cadence about a flintlock musket

A fan of the singer-guitarist who sang in this video (Bill Bartlett) phoned Bill & spoke with him. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o52idtmDuLDOkZ8.html 1. Bill took a verse from a 1933 Leadbelly song, then wrote 2 more verses. 2. Bill wrote & recorded this song with a group called The Starstruck Band BEFORE joining Ram Jam, so it's a BILL BARTLETT song, not a Ram Jam song. 3. The music you hear on the video is actually an edited version of the Starstruck Band recording, so Ram Jam is not heard playing this song: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n86EpNN_v7eyp3k.html And you are on point about the music having been recorded in a studio setting, not in the backyard that appears in the video. 4. Apparently the video was commissioned by some British interest, who filmed them & left. Bill never saw the result or the rushes for years, until this showed up on the internet. The video is obviously edited from several takes, then the Starstruck studio recording was added in post production. 5. While there is history linking Leadbelly's song to chain-/work-gangs of the 1920s, with marching cadence referencing musket guns in the Civil/Revolutionary wars, & even bottles of whiskey, Bill Bartlett says the inspiration for his 2 verses of "Black Betty" actually comes from Bettie Page, a famous [white] pin-up girl of the 1950s who wore suggestive black clothing & carried a black whip.

Could you react to Stone Cold Crazy by Queen. It's not one of their big hits but it's another song that really get you going, but again, it's too short: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZabh86pzd-7fqM.html

I've watch several reactions with this song and there are others who think that it's to short too just like you had said, but what you don't realize is that the song is longer but everybody reacts to the short version. All you have to do type in "Ram Jam Black Betty extended version". In all the reactions everybody is watching the 2:25 version. But there is another video that is 3:57. And the audio version is even longer. It's 7:11.

Don't research the lead guitarist...it will just make you sad. Enjoy him in this moment of time.

There is a longer version of that Ram Jam song. The lead singer, Bill Bartlett wrote 2 additional versus to that song which originated from a chain gang cadence and first sang by a black musician in the 1920's. Then Lead Belly stole that song from the first recording artist and recorded his own Black Betty song in the 1930's. Then Ram Jam did their own version of that song and it took off like a rocket in the 1980's where you'll hear it being used in sports arenas across the world, but the ADL and the NAACP convinced New York and L.A. not to play Ram Jam's song claiming their song was racist and that they should give all proceeds to the Lead Belly estate, which Bartlett refused. The Lead Belly estate sued and won in court against Ram Jam (despite Lead Belly stole it from a previous artist), and got all financial proceeds from their song and Ram Jam never saw a dime of that money to this day. Bill Bartlett disappeared after that lawsuit and has never been seen since. There's your corrupt "affirmative action" for you when a black man can steal a song and nothing happens to him, but when a white man steals the same song and adds 2 additional versus to it and makes it a hit like never before, he's labeled a racist and has all financial proceeds taken from him.
