While a one hit wonder, the band did have 2 albums to their name (some 20 songs total). The 2nd Album, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Ram, had more of a hard rock sound to it. Underrated gems with some great guitar work. Black Betty definitely had a different feel to it compared to most of their other work. Both albums were eventually compiled into "The Very Best of Ram Jam" in Germany of all places! Got my CD copy for $13 CAD at Amazon iirc.

The video started and I saw your eyes, you instantly became my favorite girl. I love peoples reaction to this song! The first time we heard it back in the 70's there was a group of us, about 30 teenagers, boys and girls, we went wild. We played over and over.

Unfortunately it was a one hit wonder because some of the band members got into legal trouble, drugs, etc. We used to listen to this back in the 80's at the lake blasting our car stereos lol

This was filmed in the back yard of the lead guitar player and singer, cost about $10, with their girlfriends and motorcycles in the background....lol He still lives there l believe with his girlfriend, Ram Jam never received a penny in royalties from this song, but they absolutely killed it........:-)

When I hear this song it takes me back to '77, and bikin' down to Dayton on a chopped-down '47 Knucklehead, Half stoned, carrying a straight-razor, a .45, and two thirty-eights named Shannon and Raven. Anyway, ...I think this comes from an old blues artist named "Lead Belly" (Huddie Ledbetter), and “Traditional” (another way of saying that this tune, probably even predates him). I used to hang around the Checkerboard Lounge (blues club), that used to be on the southside of Chicago, when I was a kid, where I heard some stories and tunes.

Thank you for playing that old school tune. I Love that song! You have to debut the rock group Accept with there song called "Balls to the Wall" the Live Version. The outside crowd had to be over 100,000 people. It has a great guitar solo, which you love. It also features a regular orchestra that's performing with the band. The song’s writing credit has been attached to the work of Lead Belly. However, the credit to Lead Belly may not be one hundred percent accurate as Lead Belly’s recordings of the song were probably just in essence cover versions of a song that is pretty much untraceable.

I don't know if they had any other songs hit the "Top # Charts". But this one has seen a fair amount of use in the movies and TV series spots. Great beats and both guitar and drum riffs. The lyrics are something else, when you really sit down and write them out, they are something to think about, from a 60's/early 70's point of view. Black Betty had a rough life...

They should have sang it as " BAD BETTY "...As a 60 year old white man ...the first time I heard it I thought it was a bit racist . With that said ....It stands and one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time .
