The end of that video was the funeral for Brother IZ. Those were his ashes they were releasing into the ocean. Beautiful man, beautiful voice, beautiful soul.

Best part about this song? The fact that he came in one time to the recording studio at 3 am and did this all in one take.

The song is actually sung by Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz movie although Iz has taken some creative liberties with the lyrics to make it his own. Sadly, Iz passed away in 1997 and the ending scenes in the video is of his ashes being returned to his beloved waters in Hawaii.

This was his funeral. There's a youtube video of him singing at a local function and talking to the youth about drugs, and then he sings a song his brother-in-law, I believe, wrote. That song is so amazing. Also, in that video, it shows a group he was previously with and had fallen out with coming on stage and embracing and singing together again. It's quite emotional. I didn't find IZ until he was already gone. I wish I had known of him before. Thanks for your review.

Such a beautiful version of this song. So many people have recorded it over the years but I feel this is one of the best. Sadly Israel IZ Kamakawiwoʻole died at the age of 38 in 1997. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was written for the 1939 film "The Wizard Of Oz" & was sung by actress Judy Garland. Eva Cassidy also does a great version of this song.

Iz was a beautiful soul and a loving, beautiful and talented young man. His music will live forever in the hearts and souls of all who knew him. From what I've heard, thousands attended his traditional Hawaiian funeral (the ending video as they put his ashes into the sea.

It’s my understanding that this recording was impromptu. He was winging it from memory and got the verses all jumbled together. That’s always driven me nuts but I still love this version. In a way it actually adds to the dreamlike quality of the song. I think I heard one or two other songs by him. (My sister’s fiancé is Hawaiian 🌺.) But this song was a monster big hit. It was used in many movies and TV shows, including a particularly poignant episode of “ER “. It’s a shame IZ didn’t stick around longer. From what others have said about him and from his peaceful rendition of this song he seems to have had a beautiful soul.

As a long time fan of IZ, all of his music is like this. It’s sweet and carefree, just beautiful and from what I’ve seen so was he. He passed away in 1997 at 38 years old and unfortunately I didn’t discover him until after he was gone. He lived his life in Honolulu, was a Hawaiian treasure. They flew the flags at half mass when he died. The end of this video was his funeral and I’ve watched it many times. His weight went up to 750 lbs before his death and one of the videos he made near the end of his life, was a message to young people, most of it in the Hawaiian language.

Michael, Love is indeed the most powerful force in the Universes. I got so sick of this song and then I heard Izzy sing it, and the pure innocent human love and hope it makes people feel is magic. The gift he gave us, if we share it with others, we can change the world. This is my first time encountering you online. You are a good man like most people actually start out as. We can share the love with others. We can Think Globally, and Act Locally. We can make a difference. Never Give Up.

This is indeed a beautiful rendition of a timeless song by a talented man with a sweet soul... just as you said. Now, I'd like to suggest another rendition of this song by another singer: Eva Cassidy. She's not super-famous, and her video only has 23 million views (a lot fewer than IZ's video), but in my personal opinion, it is the best performance of this song that I've ever found. I absolutely guarantee that you will be deeply moved. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNiUa7mc2bqcqI0.html (I gave up making suggestions/requests for song reactions a while ago, because no one ever took my suggestions and I got frustrated. But this one was irresistible, and I just had to request it. Fingers crossed.)
