Fun facts: Ova 1: The opening "Feuerroter Pfeil und Bogen" was used because, chronologically, this chapter is located within the Battle in Trost Arc. Because the special chapter, Ilse's Notebook, is quite short, the OAD had to be lengthened, increasing a greater number of scenes that do not appear in the manga, among the main ones are: In the manga, Ilse's body was not found inside a tree. The titan that murdered Ilse was never seen again, while in the OAD he was killed by Levi. In the original version of the manga the only characters that appear are: Ilse, Hange and Levi. The talking Titan is canon! I could be wrong, but I believe the journal is alluded to in the anime story, and it was just expanded upon on the ova. I've never seen the cooking ova, but they were going hard on Food Wars like reactions 😂

Things are pronounced odd in English because they are trying to match the German style influences. For example Jaeger from Erens last name could be pronounced as Jager thinking pure English or with the German influence they correctly go for Yeager pronunciation. Erwin is either Er Win in more English style or Er Vin in a more German stule

They have people from all over the world behind the walls. The way they pronounce Erwin is dutch.

Ilse's notebook is actually canon (the only OVA written by the AOT author himself), so what you saw is important to the story. The other two OVAs are filler episodes that are nice to watch. Hopefully you'll also watch No Regrets (parts 1 and 2), the OVA that gives some of Levi's backstory.

Erwin is a german name, so as a german i can say : the way they say his name in dub is more accurate than they say it in the sub. Hange says it the right way in this one.

I'd suggest watching everything subbed. If you wanted to see how the dub sounds, I'd do an episode reaction in sub and then a follow up rewatch using the dub where you compare the two. Afterwards you can see which you prefer going forward.

I actually really like the ENG VO for the show. I think it does some moments pretty damn near as good as the JPN VO, but the added benefit of being able to understand the voice inflection a bit better and not having to read the subs makes it equal for me. Notebook ova was pretty neato, it's cool to know it's what convinced Erwin to allow the capture of a the 2 Titans we saw in season 1. the Cookoff was spectacularly amazing, and just straight up a hoot, completely opposite of the entirety of the show tone wise, but really fun. Distress is my personal favorite of the season 1 OVAs since it's really cool to see the 104th work together and bond during training. No Regrets part 1 and part 2" are really good too

The show takes place in a Germanic themed setting, So W's sound like V's thanks to the Romans. So Erwin is not Erwin, but Ervin. Also, I kinda like this dub, Erwin sounds awesome, Hange sounds odd, but the VA does excellent work making her seem like a mad scientist. Not a big fan of the main cast in English. I could be jaded though having watched it Sub only for years. What do you Dub only dudes think of the actors?

I know dub vs sub is always a big debate, but I just always like watching media in their original language so also in anime. I just feel like the dubs try to do the japanese voices/sounds that feel awkward in english Idunno. But good on you for giving the dub a chance!

@6:23 I believe everything is canon but none are essential to the plot. Some are more filler/goofy than others. Ilse's Notebook and No Regrets are the two that most people consider to have the most impact on the main story.

Both ways to say Erwin are correct :) The one they use in the english dub is German. Because in japnese they also try to pronunce the names Like germans do. I mean many names in the Show are German, so im guessing they kept that for the english dub but it just Sounds weird i think if its english they should have pronunced it Like you did in my opinion:D

I gotta finish AoT before I watch the rest of the reactions to it, but I did want to say that the first filler One Piece arc after skypeia is widely considered one of the best arcs, even amongst Canon. It doesn't suffer from the usual filler tropes too badly, and I hope you check it out even if you don't react to it !

Much like Naruto, this is one of those animes that just comes off so much better in the dub. Not discrediting subs, but the dubs always just hit so much harder a lot of the time.

Yo, welcome back to AOT... ❤ What I don't like about the dub is how they made the Titans sound like banshees. Especially Eren's Titan. That was an ear-scratcher for me. They did improve in quality in later seasons in my opinion... OVA 1 is definitely written by Isayama, parts of it at least is in the manga. OVAs 2 & 3, if you're keen enough, you'll find some minute callbacks to them in the main series...

I know subs are what people think "are the best way" to watch anime but I have ALWAYS liked dubs more for pretty much every anime. Like you said with the accents its really hard for english speakers to differentiate different accents and for me it makes getting much personality impossible from subs impossible because i cant tell the characters apart except from the tone of their voice. For me dubs add way more in terms of immersion because i dont have to focus on reading non-stop just to know whats going on and can actually just watch the animation and whats happening on screen instead of just watching words. Keep the videos coming man, you are absolutely killin it, dub or sub im gonna binge your stuff as soon as i see it pop up :D

Really sad to hear you aren't going to be watching the main series in Dub, it is honestly so much better. The emotion, the tension, everything in the dub is just taken up to 11 imo compared to the sub. I'm sure they took some liberties with some of the lines (I haven't watched all of the sub, largely because I felt like it didn't live up to the dub) but honestly it improves on the original line 9 times out of 10 imo. Hopefully when you are done you have time to go back and watch the series in dub, it really is one of the best anime dubs ever done imo.

DO NOT WATCH OVAs LOST GIRLS BUT ONLY AFTER Season 3 Part 2 ! And PLEASE switch to the original even in the OVAs you are butchering your experience mate.
