You raise a good point about Darcy not being aware that his words were the opossite of what a gentleman in love would say, but I think it's very understanble if you take into account a few things. He was very rich, which meant he thought himself as an unrefusable match, he thought he was offering her the best thing she could have. And if Elizabeth was more like Charlotte, he would be absolutely right, and I think that is one of the reasons Charlotte exists as a character too! Darcy is not very sociable. So he lacks skills in that area. As you said, he acted out of passion maybe for the first time in his life towards a woman whom he loved, so his words came out in a stream of uncontrollable emotions. He thought he was doing the craziest thing in his life, and he wanted to convey HOW much he loved her, how much she was special, but he did it in the worse way possible, which is why it's so GOOD.

Mr. Collins is so stinking hilarious! But I can't imagine how insufferable he would be to live with. People have definitely read Charlotte as a lesbian, but I doubt if that was Jane Austen's intention. Charlotte was very practical, which is smart considering she was in her late twenties (she had several years on Elizabeth), unmarried, and wasn't considered very pretty. I think she had a pretty good idea of what she was getting into with the marriage, and for her it was a better choice than descending into poverty as an old maid. She probably knew that Mr. Collin's domestic habits would be easy to manage according to her own wishes, as long as they didn't conflict with Lady Catherine. And if they had children, she would probably find fulfillment being a mother. Elizabeth is way more of an idealist, but I like that she came around to understanding why Charlotte made those choices.

It really does speak to Darcy’s trust of Lizzie though, that even after she had just thoroughly rejected him, broke his heart and left him angry, and made it clear how utterly she despised him, that he doesn’t hesitate a moment to tell her this very personal secret about his family’s history with Wickham, one that, if we take Jane’s comment that Bingley doesn’t know the whole story of Darcy’s past with Wickham, he hasn’t even told his best friend. Even at his lowest moment, fresh off of the anger and heartbreak of her refusal, he utterly trusts her as someone he can tell this secret to who would never take advantage of it to hurt his family, even with how much she dislikes him. To me, this is why this story and this relationship in particular resonates so much with women today. Even in the sexist time period it was written in, there is true respect and trust between these two characters. They are true equals in intelligence and understanding of the world they live in, and they understand and respect each other as equals in a way they regard few other people in their lives. ❤

This Darcy portrayal is closer to book Darcy in that he is arrogant, thinks himself above a lot of people, and is reticent around most of those people, than the shy, awkward movie portrayal. He proposed like that because he was thinking of himself and his feelings. He probably did assume she'd say yes because many would say yes and he likely didn't realize how much she loathed him. A meager dowry and entailed estate would have put love on the back burner for many girls. Elizabeth is pretty singular for turning down 2 very eligible proposals despite having very little to live on in the future.

This is how I see Mrs Bennet: It's not that Mrs Bennet is okay with humiliating herself because she loves her family. It's true that Mrs Bennet is very desperate and loves her girls in her own way, but she doesn't actually realize she is humiliating herself and her family. She isn't very intelligent and married up into the gentry from the trade class and doesn't behave with much propriety. Since she married up she likely doesn't know all that is expected of her or he daughters. For instance, she sees nothing wrong with Lydia's behavior. She's actively working against her own goals without even knowing it. I see Mr Bennet as the villain of the story, as funny as he is. He does know what is expected of their class/station, is the head of the household, and refuses to check his family or take measures to ease their potential suffering after he is gone. He'd rather laugh at them or spend his time alone. I could rant for hours about Mr Bennet. 😂

I feel the same about Mr. Bennett. He is a likable character but he definitely made mistakes. The first being that he had the opportunity to change the entail (being that entails could only last 3 generations and he was the 4th) so that his daughters could inherit but he was so certain he would have a son that he kept the entail unchanged. Then he failed to keep his younger daughters’ behavior in check (and to some extent his wife’s) and this jeopardized their marriage opportunities.
@Loulizabeth
@Loulizabeth 5 ай бұрын
Totally agree with you both. I would also add that given her has 5 daughters and Lydia is 15 he's had at least this time knowing there's no son and yet he's not put money aside to add to their inheritance/dowry. Thus making it much more difficult for them to get prospective husbands. He admits this himself after what comes next. Without outside assistance all his daughters could have been left in a very bad way given what happens. We see nothing of them in Austen's novels, but by the work house was a real possibility for anyone who falls on hard times. Look at what happens in "Little Dorrit".

Mr Bennett a villain. No there are certainly villains in the story, and several people who are imperfect for one reason or another. But Mr Bennett a villain? Hardly. Oh I know it is a bit of a Feminist critique cliche to attribute the discontents and shortcomings on the nearest male figure of any standing and make him solely accountable for all those ills. But really his biggest "crime" or "villainy" was falling in love/lust with a very beautiful young lady beneath his station and marrying her. The result of this is varied and compounding, Once love petered out he was left shackled to a loveless marriage and burdened with an obnoxious, quarrelsome, overbearing, hysterical and stupid buffoonish creature with no intellect, wit, or social grace, and who is impervious to any calls to be checked or pushed back on and no chance to further his legacy and raise a young man in his image. He also recognises his inability to relate and connect with his daughters meaningfully because they were not well raised by their mother. His exception being his favourite Lizzie (who he loves for her intellect and wit and strength) and Jane (for her sweet nature and beauty - also noting whilst not as smart as Lizzie she is not as stupid and boorish as the rest of them). The man is upset and confines himself in his solitude. He dislikes his wife and is unable to really connect with his daughters. He has no son to show how to be a gentleman and likely lost a lot of social standing over the years as a result of firstly marrying his trainwreck wife and secondly being married to her. The poor man is done in. He is past anger, grief and drowning in depression. He accepts things as they are and gets on with things in hope things will come good and at some point he will get some peace and quiet. He gets small joys in practicing his wit and japes and reading and inspecting the property with little interest in gossip and the passions of young ladies. If that is a villain backstory and his is more of a villain than Wickham then someone has been brainwashed with too much Feminist toxicity. Don't you think?
@rosslumbus

@@gwenjackson8583 See my earlier answer on this.. His wife is impervious to culture and sense. She is stupid and selfish and relied on her looks and manipulation to snag a gentleman and once she had this man of standing worked on manipulating him to marry her and ride roughshod over him as he indulged and spoiled her to retain her good favour. But the time they were settled and 5 kids in the love had gone and likely put to death by her own actions and he was left with a mess that ultimately he would be held responsible for and she in return got to be as stupid, boorish and as much a buffoon as she was when she was young and pretty.

interesting discussions above. I am curious as to why there has to even be a villain at all. I don't think either mr. or mrs. Bennett are villains. they both are who they are and they both contribute to the story and the family the way they do. it seems to me the ruthlessness of the class system is the real villain of the piece. it affects everything. it punishes everyone, women especially. but I do agree with many things being said here. it seems to me the villain is the class system. and the characters who behave with the most villainy are Caroline Bingley-by trying to stand in the way of her brother marrying Jane. and the lady Catherine de burgh by trying to stand in the way lizzie and Darcy. the story is mainly about marriage. that is the event of the novel. and both mr. Bennett and mrs. Bennett don't always do the thing that will help their daughters do this with the most ease, but neither behave in ways that are truly villainous towards their daughters. I think that is too easy and too harsh a label at the same time. Mrs. Bennet behaves in a terrible way most of the time. she is rather a boorish woman, and I feel she would be no matter her class or where she married. this seems to be just who she is. her behavior is too obvious and too relished by her to be a mistake. she knows what she is doing, and she doesn't care. or she likes the behavior and making a fuss more than she wants to behave well-hence investing in her family by behaving with more tact and discretion. mr. Bennett in some ways is not doing right by his daughters with the current system but I think more than anything, he is a closet radical in a weird way. I think he finds all the social stuff that they all have to participate in as absolutely pointless and crazy. I think he hates it, and very much disagrees with how things have to be. so I agree that he is lost. He doesn't like his wife in any way. and he doesn't relate to his daughters with the exception of Lizzie who he adores. and yes, he admires Jane. I think he views the rest as silly, like his wife. I don't think there is any reason to label any of these arguments of having anything to do with feminism. that is not what I heard in those arguments. and I see no reason to knock feminism. it seems to get knocked enough these days, it is an idea that has always set alarms off for people since the term was coined. thanks for posting.

In the book Darcy later tells Lizzie that he thought she was waiting for his proposal. He put it down to his vanity at assuming that she must love him. After all, he would be considered a catch for someone of her station. This is why he has no hesitation in making her aware of his thoughts on the matter. He thinks she will swoon and accept immediately. The book doesn't make clear exactly what Darcy was doing when he entered the room to propose. It can be construed that he knew he had to have her and when he heard she'd stayed home because of a headache he figured it was his best chance to catch her alone and he couldn't hold off any longer.

Visiting big houses wasn't unheard of back then. The gentry needed money to upkeep the estate and sometimes let visitors come in to see selected parts of the house and gave the gentry the opportunity to show off their taste (or lack of, lol). It's pretty much the same today, even though some of these country estates are either still in the family or owned by English Heritage. I love how we see the differences between Collins and Darcy and how they handle Elizabeth's rejection to their proposals. Collins continues to say "Look at what you lost and what Charlotte got" while Darcy doesn't mention it and is polite and works to get to know her more without expecting anything. I also love the implication that Darcy probably talked so much about Lizzy to Georgiana that she's like "You have to introduce me to her now" Your reaction to the hand touch: SAME

Something we can't quite get from an adaptation of the book (in either movie or tv series) is Elizabeth's thought process as she reads through Darcy's letter. We get that in the book. Her rejection of what Darcy told her about Wickham, then a reflection on a lot of things - the similarities between what Wickham and Darcy told her, the inconsistencies with Wickham's story (i.e. him saying he had no fear of meeting with Darcy and then not turning up to the ball, saying he'd never expose Darcy out of respect to Darcy's father and then telling the whole town about it as soon as Darcy and the Bingley's had left town), the impropriety of Wickham just telling her his life story when they'd only met once before and were still relative strangers, and her reluctant admittance that a lot of what Darcy said about her family was true.
@StevesTubes
@StevesTubes 5 ай бұрын
I agree completely. None of the adaptations put the emphasis on the letter that the book did. That letter was incredibly important in Elizabeth's change in her opinion of Darcy. I understand that reading a letter doesn't make for great film making, but it a shame that no adaptation was able to convey the weight of Darcy's letter.

This miniseries may not spell it out as the book does, but the way they show Elizabeth flashing back to her family’s behavior while she reads the letter and flashing back to some things Wickham said alongside Darcy’s narrative does a good job of conveying that she’s recognizing the letter’s validity.

Like everyone is saying, Charlotte saw her chance and took it. It's not talked about in the miniseries, but Sir William Lucas made a modest amount of money in trade, and once he got his knighthood, quit his job in order to distance himself from it. The money he made isn't enough for not only Charlotte but Maria and at least of couple of brothers (only shown in the book). No wonder she jumped at Mr. Collins in order to make sure she survives. I also love how she's able to manipulate Mr. Collins in order to make sure he is never with her for most of the day. It also drives me nuts how Mr. Collins pretty much rubs in Elizabeth's face at what she lost when she rejected him. Of course, she doesn't care since she knew there'd be no respect or love. And don't worry, Mr. Collins isn't into Lady C lol! He's just bragging about his connection to her and all the material advantages he's getting since she's his patroness.

It was Mr Collins or becoming an old spinster who was dependent of her brothers and their families at best - and at worst a career as governess. I like that Austen gave Charlotte agency by making a marriage where she more or less was in control. In the book it's clear that she not only manages her husband at home but also puts him on a career path in the clergy. Had this book been written by one of the Bronte sisters Charlotte would have fallen in love with Lady Catherine's gardener and ended up drowning herself in the village pond.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Being alone could have been disastrous. It's Elizabeth who isn't being realistic about never marrying if not for love. Neither Charlotte's nor Elizabeth's families have much extra to spare to give to single adult sisters. The estates pass in their entirety to the heir, who is usually the oldest son, and no dowries were set aside for the girls. Since the Bennets have no male heir and the estate is entailed, it goes to the next closest male relative, Mr. Collins. He will have his own family and responsibilities so without marriage, the Bennet girls will sink into genteel poverty. That was Charlotte's eventual fate too. Charlotte has managed to create a nice situation for herself by marrying Mr. Colllins and even though she does her best to have him be away and busy for most of the day, she is still kind to him and he is obviously quite happy so she's not cheating him of the relationship he wants. Later in the book, it is clear there is physical intimacy, even though it's couched in the most polite terms.

I just have to recommend two more BBC mini series! “Wives and Daughters” and “North and South” are both based on Elizabeth Gaskell novels. If you like Pride and Prejudice I think you’ll really like these as well. Also, have you seen the 2020 adaptation of “Emma” or the 1995 version of “Persuasion”.? Both are great Jane Austen adaptations. ❤ I’m LOVING your reactions to Pride and Prejudice! 🥰

To be honest, Mr. Collins doesn't love Charlotte any more than she loves him. He didn't love Elizabeth, either. He was looking for a wife at Lady Catherine's suggestion, and his goal was to score the prettiest wife from a good family he could. He proposed to Charlotte within a week of proposing to Lizzy (maybe less, but it's been a while since I read the book). For both of them, it was a marriage of convenience. His favorite thing in the world was to simp and obsess over the wealthiest person in his acquaintance, Lady Catherine, and Charlotte's favorite thing was to have a tranquil life. They both got what they wanted and were satisfied. Love never came into the picture, really. Later, when Lizzy admits that they are a good match, she really means it, seeing how both of their lifestyles mesh well in their marriage. 😊

24:37 You've got to admire how Charlotte's handled a less than ideal marriage. She gets comfort and security out of it, she won't be living with the title 'spinster' or 'burden to her family', and as far as the world and her husband is concerned, she is a dutiful wife who is attentive to her husbands health and so encourages his partaking in activities that are good for the mind and for his health - gardening and walking. And can agree to a degree with her husband about Lady Catherine without fully proving him wrong, i.e. "She is a very attentive neighbour", which technically isn't a lie.

People sleep on Charlotte. But she came out of that situation leveling up. He takes her council. This means that he respects her thoughts and her opinions. I can promise you that you don't get that today in this age. By the end of the book she was pregnant. Mr Collins was going to give Charlotte. Those two are much more similar than people want to give them credit for. Plus in the books she spent more time with Mr Collins then in the movies or the you know adaptations. She didn't just accept the proposal she manipulated that situation. Charlotte was not stupid. She understood. Mr Collins is ambitious. He thinks. The girls considered him to be odious. What you have to remember are these are teenage girls. Charlotte was looking at him like he was a man. A man who was going to provide her children, money, a house that was her own. Baby,, 80% of us can't get that in the USA right now. Lol. So let's not play😂

I tend to tell people that the 2005 movie is best if you have never read the book. If you have read the book then the 1995 series may be more enjoyable. If you watch the series without reading the book, it will either make you want to read it, or feel like you did. It's so well done and truly a great adaptation. I love both adaptations for different reasons. They are comfort watches. ❤

Nah, he was as sure of her acceptance as Mr Collins was. I think he had been fighting his attraction for so long that once he started talking he just let all that frustration out. The good news is that at least he didn't ruin his chances by doing so, since there was no way he could have worded his proposal that would have been successful! 😄

It can be argued that Elizabeth was an idiot for refusing both Collins and Darcy. The Bennett women were facing financial ruin due to the entail. They had little option for gainful employment so marriage was essential to survival. Collins was probably the best prospect than Charlotte could ever hope to snag. She saw him for what he was, a pompous buffoon, but also a reasonably decent man not prone to any vices. It would not escape her notice that he would eventually inherit Longbourne. That event would bring the added bonus of moving beyond the reach of Lady Catherine's constant meddling. No wife worth her salt wants any other female telling her how to fold her sheets or arrange her cupboards. The fact that Elizabeth lucked out was tantamount to winning a high stakes lottery. Darcy is handsome, healthy, young, and fit. He is educated, cultured, stinking rich, and loves her. Plus he is chafing at the bit to assure her of the violence of his affections. What more could a woman ask when she could have easily ended up in desperate poverty?

Fitzwilliams showing up always cracks me up, ‘cause you get the very strong sense that Darcy brought him here to wingman for him, that he told his cousin all about this girl he likes and how he thinks she likes him and how he wants Fitzwilliam to talk him up to her a bit and help him out, but when he gets there this girl so obviously despises his cousin and he has no idea why after Darcy seemed confident about the relationship and he’s just so confused. 😂 And then he accidentally hands Lizzie the absolute biggest reason to hate him on a plate when he was trying to talk him up.

This mini-series is a slow burn, and I love it!!! The book Pride and Prejudice is written from Elizabeth's perspective, so we don't often see what Mr. Darcy is thinking. If you'd like an example of that...there's a trilogy by Pamela Aidan called: Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman. It's a brilliant companion series to the original book, showing Mr. Darcy's perspective. It is thoroughly researched, engaging, and an excellent read. The three books are: A Company Such as This, Duty and Desire, and These Three Remain.

You’re looking at Charlotte and Mr Collins with modern eyes. Her marriage to him was an act of convenience. At the “old” age of 28 and with a younger brother set to inherit her Father’s wealth, Charlotte’s prospects were very poor. She had decided that “love” was not part of her need to find a husband, so his position as Lady Catherine’s parson and the standing and security it gave, were sufficient for her. As for your query of the “relationship” between mr Collins and Lady Catherine and her intrusion into their life, that was purely her power and control of him because she was his patron ( paid him and funded his lifestyle) and his servitude to her, nothing more. Charlotte now had a position, a home, servants, a purse and a community to manage, so was happy. ( plus minimising the time spent with him helped)

Oh! Something to know about them getting in to see Pemberly and the housekeeper being happy to do it... it wasn't just that people would randomly ask to see these places. They acted very much as museums do now, these buildings and their belongings were used not just to show their wealth but were often carefully curated collections and centuries of the family's histories. The housekeepers charged a small admittance fee, it was actually a great way for them to earn pocket money. Like paying for a ticket to a museum nowadays, these houses then and now were like destination spots and people touring the areas made plans to visit the houses as part of their trips. It wasn't all just for vanity although that played a part. Houses became known for parricular things like their gardens or libraries or art collections. The housekeeper was expected to give the tours when asked because the families did travel back and forth and weren't always there nor would they want or be expected to do it themselves. And since they were collecting fees it was a great "side business" for them and a quick way to earn some cash.

Also a good way to keep the servants on their best behavior; all the maids can aspire to become the housekeeper one day, and all the footmen can aspire to become the butler! You might still be a servant, but you earn a lot more and you get to boss the other servants around.

In the books, when Darcy is talking about the distance from her family, she smiles because she is thinking he's talking about Colonel Fitzwilliam, because Lizzy has been spending time with him more, and it's a better, more eligible match. Lizzy is totally blindsided by Darcy's proposal. She really thought he didn't like her 😂
@korganrocks3995

Darcy is a way more eligible match on paper, since Colonel Fitzwilliam doesn't have much money. A Colonel's wages were 400 or 500 a year iirc, and while he might have inherited some money or be given an allowance by his father, it can't be all that much, since he tells Lizzy that he can't afford to marry whoever he wants.

Crispin Bonham Carter (Bingley) is Helena’s 3rd cousin The father of Bingley wanted to buy property to be a gentleman and not a trader. He was a moneyed person, much more money than the gentleman Mr. Bennet. But the elder Bingley passed away without being able to buy. Bingley rented Netherfield, and lived with the Hursts when in London. Caroline knows this, and also knows her eventual inheritance is probably big for those days, so she is haughty to make up for the family not owning an estate. Eventually Charles Bingley after marriage, was able to buy an estate within 30 miles of Pemberly. The 1995 P&P of BBC is closer to the book, and the best of them all imho.

You’ve done an excellent job of understanding the world these characters live in, many reactors (especially with the movie, since it packs so much into so little runtime) don’t really grasp why Mrs Bennett is so hellbent on marrying her daughters off. And they then don’t understand why Darcy is so offended by her actions and speech. I’ve read the book countless times and watched the movie and series over and over, but it took me a long time to get that Mr. Bennett is really not doing a great job of fathering his daughters. Elizabeth gets her idealism from him, which makes for a great story but realistically means they’re not planning at all for what will happen when he passes. All that to say, these are so much fun to watch with you, you get the setting AND the feelings!

I’ve always read me collins and lady Catherine have a symbiotic relationship- they both get off on the association. It’s not a relationship or a romance, it’s that lady Catherine is giving him a place in the world in exchange for his worship (especially good for a priest!). I think lady Catherine likes helping the less fortunate, not for the sake of it but for the respect it brings, and Mr collins likes praising lady Catherine because she pays his way. I think Mr collins is more innocent in the relationship, less aware of how obnoxious it actually is

I discovered your channel recently from just a recommendation and I have to say, I have loved your perspective, and your pure reactions, of my FAVORITE book since I was in 5th grade (back in the 90s). Just, everything my Austenites have these theories and conversations before KZfaq? Also, you're not overthinking, again, you are RIGHT on target! Mr. Collins, I would say, if you had explained him to younger high school students reading or watching this, Mr. Collins is a simp for Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Even though it was regular for a clergyman to have a patron for their parish, he seems like he goes out of his way to show his appreciation for Lady Catherine to the point of, I think, she likes that he feeds to her own ego. Almost like a hype-man to her! LOL This Mr. Darcy is 100% percent book accurate in his personality versus the movie. I mean, I can pull up the chapters while watching the series and scenes are literally per batum on scene. Also, yes, back in the day if the families were not home in their estates, it was quite normal to tour homes. It was suppose to be another way of showing off their success.

The scarf is lovely, Kemi, no worries! Thank you so much for watching my favorite series ever and for ENJOYING it as much as you did! So many people miss all the nuances but you were pretty on top of them. I believe Jennifer Ehle's last name is pronounced EE-LEE. I've heard it referred to that way more than once. Hopefully, that's correct. I love how you can tell that Elizabeth is starting to change her mind about Darcy before seeing Pemberly. Of course, she's impressed by the estate but it's not what makes her care for Darcy. It's his character that she is getting to know better that does it first. Here is the text from the book that describes Mr. Bennet's attitude toward his wife and why he is either hiding away in the library or coming out to make fun of his own family. "Had Elizabeth's opinion been all drawn from her own family, she could not have formed a very pleasing opinion of conjugal felicity or domestic comfort. Her father, captivated by youth and beauty, and that appearance of good humour which youth and beauty generally give, had married a woman whose weak understanding and illiberal mind had very early in their marriage put an end to all real affection for her. Respect, esteem, and confidence had vanished forever; and all his views of domestic happiness were overthrown. But Mr. Bennet was not of a disposition to seek comfort for the disappointment which his own imprudence had brought on, in any of those pleasures which too often console the unfortunate for their folly or their vice. He was fond of the country and of books; and from these tastes had arisen his principal enjoyments. To his wife, he was very little otherwise indebted, than as her ignorance and folly had contributed to his amusement. This is not the sort of happiness which a man would in general wish to owe to his wife; but where other powers of entertainment are wanting, the true philosopher will derive benefit from such as are given. Elizabeth, however, had never been blind to the impropriety of her father's behaviour as a husband. She had always seen it with pain; but respecting his abilities, and grateful for his affectionate treatment of herself, she endeavoured to forget what she could not overlook, and to banish from her thoughts that continual breach of conjugal obligation and decorum which, in exposing his wife to the contempt of her own children, was so highly reprehensible."

that is correct on the pronunciation of Jennifer Ehle's last name-EE-LEE is completely right. I am trying to think of words that rhyme-it's hard-i am only thinking of the word "wheelie" as I-when I was a little boy-i loved my huffy bike-i liked to ride fast-and sometimes would pop a wheelie. (yeah-sorry. not very good. just like I wasn't very good at popping wheelies, either.) there was an amazing British actress named Rosemary Harris who was Jennifer Ehle's mother. Rosemary Harris was a major stage actress in London. I was lucky enough to see her onstage several times. She was considered one of the great British actresses of her time. She also acted on broadway many times. She was very beautiful, and had a fantastic speaking voice. The year the National Theatre in London opened-Laurence Oliver ran the theater, and was the star director and actor as well. Rosemary Harris was his main leading actress opposite him, which was a huge moment for her. Jennifer Ehle was raised in both the u.s. and London, and trained as an actress in both the u.s and London. Like her mother, Jennifer Ehle has also done a lot of stage work. She won the Tony award twice, as well she has had nominations for the Olivier award for her stage work in the u.k.

Luckily Jane and Lizzie have looks and good intelligence, but their father wants a compatible marriage for his eldest 2 daughters in a way he doesn't have himself. He berates himself for not being able to provide greater financial security for them, so that they will have more of a chance with suitable men.

I've always thought that Mrs. Bennet was a lot like Lydia when she was a girl and Mr. Bennet was infatuated or in lust with her and has come to regret his choice. Mrs. Bennet does mean well when it comes to marrying off her girls, but it also has to do with her own status/comfort as a widow since she expects to outlive her husband. RE Mr. Collins- his character was written for the author to express her satirical views of the clergy, deliberately ridiculous. You're very compassionate. :) BTW, you'd probably love the book if you enjoy the flowery language. It takes a little bit of work to get into the rhythm of it, but it's worth it. I've read it many times and love it more every time.

all of the Austen novels are marvelous. and yes, once you adjust to the language, and the heightened style, you are in-and they fly by. Austen was such a wonderful writer.

Have you watched Anna of Green Gables movie from 1985, it's a canadian movie? There's also a sequel from 1987 and The continuing story movie (2000). Based on the book series. I think you might like them.

That's a great idea too! I think she would love them too. I've also never seen anyone else react to it. I've seen some reactions to Anne with an E, but no one does the whole 80's Anne of Green Gables saga.

I don’t know about movies, but I’ve seen Collins in a bunch of British shows I watch, mostly as one-off characters in murder mystery shows. Though his IMDB page says he was in the Bourne Identity, so I guess there’s that too.

I just love the absolute dumpster fire of a mess that is Mr Darcy's proposal here. Like... there was hardly a single thing he could have done to make it worse. XD And yet when you start reading between the lines (and, with the benefit of knowing what happens later, know what to look for) it says so, so much about him. Yes, he is extremely arrogant, rude and a bunch of other things there, and I’m not defending his conduct in the slightest, but he’s also someone who is trying so very hard to deal with emotions completely foreign to him, and is thus WAY out of his comfort zone. And so he falls back on his own form of “blunt honesty” that is his emotional armor. And Elizabeth, of course, gives as good as she gets. I love how you can *see* the entire emotional subtext play out in Colin Firth’s eyes during this scene, and I have no idea how he managed that while being such a complete douchebag in words and attitude. Absolute brilliance! And oh my god, the scene at the lake! You could cut the mutual awkwardness with a knife! XD Also, I have to give a shoutout to Mr Collins - he is so delightfully absurd and I can’t listen to him without smiling. I'm very much looking forward to your reaction to the last parts!

As per usual, you provide some of the best nuance, analysis and critical thinking in your assessment. Especially in the understanding of characters that are considered “ridiculous”.

1:03:19 You may have noticed that characters and/or places have themes in this series. This one right here is the Pemberley Theme - although this is not the first time we've heard it. It plays during Ep. 1, when Darcy watches Elizabeth play with the dog at Netherfield.

Random fact that will make you chuckle: Darcy meeting Elizabeth with his shirt hanging out like that would have been doubly embarrassing for her because men didn’t wear underwear under their pants. Their shirt being extra long would have been tucked into their pants and around the areas usually covered by modern underwear. awkward 😅😂
