I am 100% sure that as a criticism for a movie "I knew the twist before it came." is way better than "I'm sure if I cared more, I would have gotten there." HAHAHA

Tbh, this is the only "Saw" film that was so bad it actually made me a little mad. It felt like a parody more than an actual Saw movie. But in hindsight, that makes total sense - because it was never supposed to be a Saw movie.

I give spiral credit for trying something different. Jigsaw started to do that but then it reverted back to the twists we’d already seen done in previous films and created a storyline that doesn’t really fit with the timeline of the original films. (I understand there are videos and fan theories that point out how Logan does fit into the timeline but I stand by my comment on the jigsaw reaction that this twist was done better in previous movies.) I appreciate the killer this time around was an actual copycat who basically built on jigsaw’s legacy and ended up convincing himself he was doing the right thing. And I do like the idea of touching on police corruption. I also think a lot of the traps were better in this movie (the finger trap and hot wax trap were absolutely brutal.) But, spiral isn’t very good, the story is presented in an odd way, it is very clunky, which I think it’s mostly due to the editing. And William Shink being alive was a pretty obvious twist. I still think it’s better than saw 3d and jigsaw but that’s not saying much. Edited to add: someone commented that they wanted to replace all the Chris Rock scenes with Marty from Madagascar, I full support this idea.

Absolutely agreed. At least Spiral TRIED to make it feel like a Saw movie, Jigsaw didn’t try at ALL!!! The stupid plot twist, the FLATSCREEN TVS IN THE EARLY 2000’s?! The godamn stupid idea that Jigsaw SAVED someone from a trap and took them under his wing? Saved his life, and then taught him everything he knows, HELPED HIM LEARN TO WELD THINGS, and somehow that stupid retcon character was his sidekick before Amanda? That is easily the worst plot point in any of these movies, Spiral is harmless in comparison
@MamadNobari

Just because that "different" is pure trash and 100 times worse with schizo editing and dialogue and script written by a 12-year-old, doesn't mean you should give it credit and praise.

@@MamadNobari After two movies giving us basically the same twist in a row, I think spiral does deserve a bit of praise for not going back to the same boring well. Is that a low bar for praise, yeah, and I’ll concede to that. But at least it tried, it was executed pretty poorly but it still gets some points for effort in my book.

@Caine187
@Caine187 Жыл бұрын
For context: Darren has came out and said this was intended to get new fresh faces into the series and be a soft reboot with and easier to understand story. The idea also started because Chris Rock bought it up to the producers at a mutual friends wedding lol. It was also meant to come out in 2019 I THINK, then got delayed to 2020, but....that whole thing happened...so here they ar ein 2021 IMO having the star power of Chris Rock, 21 Savage and Sam Jackson is what hurt the film the most. Saw has always been a notoriously low budget series in general but jumping from that to having one of the most celebrated comedians, most celebrated black actors, and a current relevant rapper involved probably gave them a lot of power on what to do.

Regardless of how bad people look at it... I wanna give this movie a mad respect, still. I'm firm to say that it's still part of the whole franchise. Why? Spiral is supposed to be a some sort "parody" of the Saw movies. It focuses on how people outside the characters of SAW reacted to what they were hearing. That's why the story came from a John Cramer copycat guy who does so poor traps and even made a very lame plot twist. It is literally a story of SAW outside of what we've seen. But aside that, it's great that they went on the hot topic of a political and economic corruption. THE ONLY THING I HATE WAS ALL THE UNNECESSARY JOKES THAT WAS INVOLVED IT ALMOST MADE ME REFUSE THIS MOVIE TO BE A SAW MOVIE, TOO 😂

The new Jigsaw voice killed the fuck out of me and my mom hated this movie because of the hilarious voice lmao. I want Logan and Eleanor back. This story and characters felt so silly. Spiral is my least liked Saw film. The twist was predictable and so eh. So I guess in this world, there's a total of two Copycat Jigsaw killers in the same city? With Eleanor as Logan's accomplice ? I feel the EXACT same feelings as you. This movie is horrible to me. Not to mention, there is no group main game which keeps this at the bottom of the pile for me.

the thing that bothers me about spiral is that the traps are excecutions, there's no way any of them could've survived and it's so stupid because this kid is targeting them because of their police brutality while the entire fucking movie is about police brutality (and not even making it look "bad" if that makes sense, they keep saying "it's how we do things") also, i think spiral wanted so bad to be an action movie instead of a suspense / horror and i just hate action/cop movies

Despite what people think of this movie as a whole, I have respect for Chris Rock for at least trying to spice things up a bit. Not many comedians do that kind of stuff. The humor is a hit or miss for the most part and I am aware that the copycat killer's voice is viewed with either indifference or annoyance. At times, Spiral didn't feel like a Saw film per say. It was trying to go back to its roots, which I can appreciate alot. The first two films were more or less horror/thrillers. Once 3 came out, it turned the rest of the series into stereotypical slasher movies. I also do like the traps in Spiral and Charlie Clouser, who did the musical score from the last eight films came back for this one, which I was happy about. All and all, I've seen mostly a mix reaction towards this movie.

I liked Spiral actually. The actual twist was with "why" William was the killer, not him being one. That was way too obvious for the franchise. And mark my word, in Saw X they will connect young William to John, that's my bet. But I only liked it after seeing it twice. I appreciated that they made the killer disconnected instead of creating another yet-unknown secret disciple. Let's be honest. They tried semi-reboot actual sequel with Jigsaw. Too many ties for the new audience, not enough for the fans of the franchise. They made Spiral, this time only the motif being the common thing, didn't work good as well. Now they come back with the old characters to see how that works out. Personally I would be happy with Spiral 2, but Saw X is what fans truly need. But in Spiral, at least the investigation part of the movie was cool and characters were memorable, unlike Jigsaw in which investigation was a sh*t show of nonsense actions and cops believing that Kramer came back from the dead. It was also lacking in terms of continuity, while Spiral wasn't.

After seeing it, I have no idea what that "great idea" was supposed to be. "You should make a Saw movie but with Chris Rock in it" seemed to be the extent of it. Saw V was the last Saw movie with an original twist, as terribly executed as it was. Saw IV is just ripping off Saw II with the timeline and apprentice twist. Saw VI is ripping off Saw III's relationship twist. Saw 3D was yet another apprentice.

@@ticktock6225 Here's the difference with Jigsaw. Set up. Hoffman already showed up in Saw 3 and he was already acting weird what with his comments and the fact that he puts a piece of evidence in his pocket (although the first time you watch you might not notice). Saw 4 is not ripping off Saw 2 because in 4 the events take place at the same time as the third movie not before the movie itself (the case with 2 and Jigsaw). As for Saw 6, even if the twist is pretty much the same, the situation is very different. Also, the biggest twist of Saw 3 was the final one, with Jeff's daughter being kidnapped. And with Saw 7, well. I wouldn't call Gordon an apprentice. He's an asset like John puts it. And in Saw 2 the hooded dude was indeed limping. Plus he was already set up in Saw 6 with Jill dropping off the envelop in a hospital. Logan literally comes out of nowhere.
@ticktock6225
@ticktock6225 Жыл бұрын
@@theunknownuser9609 Hoffman "came out of nowhere" just as much as Logan did. We had these flashbacks with Amanda and John setting up games and then Saw V and VI started retconning the timeline and injecting new events. They could've done the same to Logan or just explain he left the Jigsaw web early to be a family man. Jeff's daughter having been kidnapped is not a twist. You're arguing semantics about the Gordon and relationship stuff, the Gordon twist was still just a "this person was in cahoots with Jigsaw" twist, the relationship twist was just a reveal of these characters you didn't know were connected actually were. Saw has been 99% composed of copy and pasting it's own tropes and cliches since Saw IV, it's not exactly a series known for originality beyond the first few movies.

Now that you’ve reached the (at the time I’m writing this comment) most recent Saw film there is one major grievance I would like to express regarding my favourite horror franchise. In the later Saw movies John Kramer seemed to develop some sort of strange psychic ability. Like seriously some of the stuff that John “predicts” would straight up require him to have psychic powers. I don’t care how good John says his “perception” or “ability to predict human behaviour” is because he shouldn’t possibly be able to predict most of the stuff that he does. It’s pure plot convenience! Why can John predict seemingly impossible to predict things? Oh, he’s just really good at it. Probably the most hand-wavy explanation ever. The writers obviously just got lazy. They’re telling us John is smart rather than showing us that he’s smart. It started off small with stuff like the magnum eyehole trap (yes, that’s what it’s called) from Saw 2. The trap working relies on two factors. One, someone finds the key and disregards/ignores the instructions not to use it on the door. Two, that person looks through the eyehole on the door while turning the key. While it isn’t completely unreasonable to assume that those things would happen the possibility that someone either follows the instructions or doesn’t look in the eyehole is still very much there. As the movies went on John’s “predictions” became less and less believable. The straw that breaks the camels back would likely be John’s death, or more specifically what happens after his death. So many things happen after John dies with so many variables that it would be basically impossible to predict all of it perfectly. Like what if Hoffman just decided to call it quits after John died? John’s entire plan for Saw 5 and 6 would be screwed! In conclusion, John Kramer is psychic. The proof is indisputable. If only he had used his powers for the good of humanity rather than murdering people (I don’t care what anyone says about his nonsense philosophy! He is absolutely a murderer no matter how much this franchise claims that he isn’t.) than we could have advanced our understanding of the human mind to new heights! Oh well! I guess that all this nonsense happened instead! (This conclusion is a kind of half joke by the way.) More on the topic of Spiral it’s alright as a generic horror flick, but it’s absolutely abysmal as a Saw film. I find that I enjoy this film much more when I don’t view it through the lens of it being a Saw film. Still even then it has its problems. Schenk is possibly one of the most obvious twist villains in horror history. Horror movie rule numero uno: If you don’t see their body then they probably aren’t really dead. I know we have the doll with his tattoo on it and the skinned body, but the guy could have just replicated his tattoo on someone else and skinned them in order to accomplish this. My next complaint is that Schenk’s plan (at least at the end of the movie) makes no goddamn sense. The way Schenk presents the final choice is very strange. The way he presents it Zeke can either shoot the target which will free his father but allow Schenk to escape, or he can shoot Schenk and let his father die. The main problem is both of these choices would not really be in Schenk’s favour. Remember that the final choice is immediately preceded by Schenk asking Zeke to join him. If Zeke takes the first option to free his father and Schenk runs away then no apprentice for him! If Zeke takes the second option to shoot Schenk and let his dad die then at best Schenk will be seriously injured and at worst he’ll flipping die. It would be kind of hard to get revenge on corrupt cops with a bullet stuck in you or with a bad case of death. And even if Schenk survives the shooting with relatively minimal injuries it would at least slow him down making it easier for the cops he just called to catch him. So the question is what does Schenk have to gain from giving Zeke this choice? Practically nothing! What, was Zeke supposed to drop the gun and not shoot at all and then Schenk would be like, “Alright, you passed my unnecessarily confusing final test! Now you can join me as my apprentice!” Cause if that was the route he was hoping Zeke would take then Schenk made absolutely no effort to indicate that was an option. And if he was hoping Zeke would figure that out on his own then it still wouldn’t make sense! As mentioned earlier, Schenk calls the police and tells them there’s a crazy guy with a gun at the building before giving Zeke the final choice. So Zeke is under pressure to make his choice quickly before they arrive. He probably wouldn’t be thinking straight enough in this situation to even think of an option beyond the two that Schenk presented. Ultimately Zeke ends up freeing his dad. He tries to chase down Schenk anyways but this results in Zeke getting the worst of both worlds. Schenk gets away and Zeke’s dad also dies because Zeke didn’t have the common sense to realize there was a backup trap in case he tried to cheat the game in the way that he did. So now not only does Schenk not have an apprentice but Zeke probably also hates him now. Zeke is likely to become an obsessed detective of sorts (like Detective Tapp) and dedicate the rest of his life to tracking Schenk down. Congratulations Schenk, you played yourself! Game over! Another grievance about Spiral I have (but less so then Schenk’s downright nonsensical plan) is that there isn’t really anything that the corrupt cops are learning from these traps. It’s just blatant murder. Like, it’s even more blatant than the murder that John was committing. This movie probably contains some of the most brutal and unsurvivable traps in the series (not counting the traps that are literally designed to be impossible). At least when John was killing people there was some sort of lesson that his victims were supposed to learn from their game. Schenk is all just, “Horribly mutilate yourself in a way that will likely result in your death anyways or die, LAWL!” (And yes, if your playing the trap by Schenk’s rules as he presents them then most of the so called “escape” methods would likely result in the victim’s death. This is most apparent with the tongue trap and hot wax trap.) I mean, it kind of makes sense considering Schenk’s backstory and motivation, but it still bothers me that there wasn’t really a lesson the corrupt cops were supposed to be learning from the traps other than the already obvious, “Don’t be corrupt.”

People misunderstand the shotgun door, honestly. First of all, they HAD to open the door to the room. They had to, or they all would've died. Either that or the safe inside the room actually contained all the necessary doses, and ALL they had to do was figure out the combination - meaning they never had to leave the room at all. That's the only other option where they don't HAVE to open that door. But then all those traps are wasted and no one learns their lesson. So I'm guessing they were supposed to ignore it; and of course they would. Anyone would. Because they were specifically told they needed to find antidotes. That's not difficult to predict. That's common sense. Second, no one actually had to be LOOKING in the peephole to get shot. You are assuming that they needed to get shot in the eye - but they didn't. Any part of their body that was in front of the peephole would've sustained the injury. There's no reason they had to be looking at it. It was just a convenient way to hide the gun. Third, you know you're in a house full of booby traps. It actually makes a lot of sense you'd want to see outside the room before fully opening the door. So it's really not THAT weird that someone would look through the peephole.

@@LordofFullmetal I 100% agree with you and would also like to add that the person who looked through the peephole wasn't even the person turning the key. The one turning the key was that rough guy carved out is neck, the one looking through the peephole was some other guy.

I definitely agree to some degree with the last paragraph but with it being a copycat, I definitely think it's viable that the traps are outlandish and, most of the time, not survivable.

I really disliked this movie. The script writing is bad, and I am being generous. The way they delivered the expositions are just too obvious, too scripty. I almost expect them to look at the camera when they say those lines. It's almost on par with Shyamalan's Last Airbender lines of "As you know... ". Every time I hear them, it takes me out of the movie. It makes the actors look like they're bad at acting (at least I hope it's just the script). Also, that movie protagonist, he just talks and talks, and it makes me hate the movie even more. And that weird Jigsaw voice in the tapes. *puke* Zero enjoyment in watching it but I am still glad to watch your reaction to it. I do love the idea of a spinoff rather than a sequel without John Kramer. But this is a bad execution in my opinion.

I've seen the actor who plays the villain of this in another tv show - and honestly, I think he's just a bad actor. I don't think that's the script. He's pretty underwhelming in the other thing too.

This movie is usually just criticised because it doesn't involve John Kramer or Billy the Puppet and it's stupid. It's a spin-off and they weren't needed

I genuinely dont get why people hate the voice of the antagonist in this movie so much.. If anything, I think a low, gravely “I WANT TO PLAY A GAME” is just cheesy and super predictable. With this voice to text method, idk man its just so eery to me. I wonder if I’m the only one who thinks this
