And just like that, with one single line, the entire saga is completely changed. Up until now, Star Wars had very much been a fairy-tale in space. You have good guys and bad guys and that's it. But then, with a single line of dialogue uttered by Darth Vader, this black-and-white line turns into uncountable shades of grey. This is unquestionably one of the greatest movie sequels ever made.

The reason they tortured Han without asking him any questions is because they didn't need him to answer any questions. The whole point was for Han to feel pain to lure Luke, which worked like a charm.

Yeah, he had some adventures with Han and Chewie a long time ago. But at the time of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, he's far removed from that and has a whole city he's responsible for. Han was never his favorite person anyway, especially after a certain card game. Why would Lando risk what he has now?

As someone who grew up watching Star Wars, with most of my family members also being aware of at least the original trilogy, I used to think that "no way people don't know anything about these movies... they're everywhere! the merch, the tv runs of the movies and shows, just people talking..." So yeah, then I made a good friend in college who was so totally not-in-the-know about any kind of space fiction, I just had to convince her to give Star Wars a chance, and... so happy I did, lol. I still remember the pure shock and amazement on her face at the whole father reveal What I'm saying is, personally, I can absolutely believe people being blind to almost 100% of the stuff from extremely popular franchises, ahah

The best way to think about the Dark Side is like a drug addiction. It is very hard to escape and the self-loathing just feeds back into the addiction. Hate, fear, anger are all like the drug, so when Vader tells Luke to release his anger, he is trying to convince him to use The Dark Side of the Force. Darth Vader hates and fears the Emperor, so he really does want Luke to join him and overthrow the Emperor (if you read the book, George Lucas made it explicitly clear that Vader did want Luke to join him and kill the Emperor).

Yoda literally JUST told Luke that aggression is the fast-path to the dark side and a Jedi never raises his saber in aggression. Luke is about to go into the tree heavy with the dark side and asks what's in there. "Only what you take with you". Luke picks up his weapons. "Your weapons, you will not need them". Luke takes his weapons. So what does Luke find in there? Darth Vader. Luke's first move? Immediately draws his saber first and attacks. The result? Luke sees himself in the dark side. That was his failure in the tree. The real failure was that he didn't even learn the lesson, he drew his saber and attacked fist at Cloud City. He was not ready. He did nothing to help his friends, they escaped without him and he almost got himself captured/killed. As for Han, Leia & Chewie being tortured but not asked any questions? They were only being tortured because Vader knew Luke would sense their pain and come running. Yoda said "help them you could, but you would destroy all for which they have fought, and suffered". Luke walked right into the trap.
@WJS774
@WJS774 5 ай бұрын
They only escaped without him because Vader was distracted, and Vader was distracted because Luke was there. If Luke hadn't gone, there's no way that they would have been able to escape from Darth Vader. The real lie is when Yoda says that if Luke goes, he would destroy all that they have fought for, but Luke going doesn't hurt the cause of the rebellion at all.
@jabecker21
@jabecker21 5 ай бұрын
@@WJS774 you may be right that they were able to escape because Vader was distracted by Luke. There’s no way to know that for sure but it would’ve been much harder for them to escape if Vader wasn’t busy with Luke. I don’t think you’re correct about Yoda’s quote, I’ve always thought of that differently. I don’t think he’s talking about destroying the rebellion. He says “fought and suffered”. I always took that to mean the suffering they are experiencing being tortured by Vader. The main reason Vader is hunting and then torturing them is to get to Luke. By Luke willfully going there he is falling right into Vader’s trap and his friends’ fighting not to get caught and suffering the torture is in vain.

Oh I should add - the "I love you...I know" scene was an ad lib by Harrison Ford (who really should get an award for coming up with some of the most iconic quotes in the 20th century)...the original script had him saying the predictable "I love you too" but Harry felt it would be more "Han" to say something cocky like "I know." Vader didn't know Luke was his son before The Emperor told him. George Lucas said that Vader had suspicions, but Skywalker is meant to be a name that quite a few people have in the entire galaxy, it isn't exclusive to Anakin/Luke's family. So when Vader heard "Luke Skywalker" he had suspicions, but he didn't actually believe it until The Emperor said it. Also, it's a known thing between The Emperor and Vader and people like them is that they're always trying to get rid of each other. The Master is always trying to find a stronger apprentice and getting them to kill the current apprentice and take over. While the apprentice is always trying to find their own apprentice and overthrow and kill their master so they can become the master. It's kind of an unwritten rule of them that they all know, but don't really talk about, lol. Which explains why Vader is trying to recruit Luke.

@MrGrayThunder - Actually, Vader did know that Luke was his son, well before Vader had his conversation with the Emperor. The movie’s clues are very clear on this point: 1) The Emperor IS NOT telling Vader anything that Vader doesn't already know. Note that Vader said, in an earlier part of the movie, "...and I'm sure Skywalker is with them." So Vader already knew that someone named 'Skywalker' was a Big Person in the Rebel alliance, and he probably already knew that this Skywalker was THE PERSON who destroyed the Death Star. Vader also knew that when he (Vader) was attempting to shoot down Luke’s X-Wing in 'A New Hope' that, "The Force is strong with this one." So, the Force is unusually strong with someone, who happens to have the name, 'Skywalker' - and 'Skywalker' is the same name that Vader had before he was Vader. I’m willing to believe that George Lucas said what he said about ‘Skywalker’ being a common name in the galaxy. But the fact remains that no fact, no piece of dialogue or revealed info in any of the 1-6 films, supports this view. The ONLY characters we EVER encounter, or hear about, with the name ‘Skywalker’ are Anakin, Luke and Shmi. From the audience’s context, ‘Skywalker’ in these stories is a name that is absolutely unique...So, Vader already knew he had a son, before he spoke to the Emperor. 2) If Vader already knew, why did he conceal that fact, and act surprised when the Emperor mentioned it? "How is that possible?" The answer is, that while Vader serves the Emperor, Vader also •hates• the Emperor, and has a different agenda than the Emperor. Vader wants to rescue Luke from death, and to kill the Emperor, and then rule the galaxy with his son - the only family he has left (that Vader knows about). That means turning Luke to the Dark Side. By contrast, the Emperor wants to remove Luke as a threat. That could mean destroying Luke, but when Vader suggests turning Luke to the dark side, the Emperor goes along with it: If Luke is converted to the Dark Side, the Emperor can "trade up" and replace Vader with "a new apprentice, one far younger and more powerful." So, when Vader talks to the Emperor, both Vader and the Emperor are "scheming past one another." Each one wants to use a future, changed-version-of-Luke to destroy the other Sith Lord. •••• Therefore: Vader learned that he had a son, that his name is Luke, and that this person almost certainly is “the young Rebel that destroyed the Death Star.” Vader began pursuing Luke for Vader’s own purposes. Then the Emperor learned about Luke independently, and spoke with Vader. Vader had to pretend to be surprised at the Emperor’s statements about Luke. At the same time, the Emperor is setting Vader up for a downfall. The Emperor does not know that he is vulnerable to Vader, but the Emperor does want to ‘trade up’ with Luke. The Emperor wants to move things in that direction, and that’s why the Emperor talks with Vader in the first place.

There is only one reason you are confused. You have too many information taken out of context and on random order. Unavoidable. You can’t escape all the information out there even if you’ve never seen the films. We didn’t have the info you have now when we first started. I read the original novel for Star Wars A New Hope in 1977. So much of the story has been planned out in advance that it was eerie after I saw the original trilogy and the prequels. Why Obi wan smiled before Darth Vader cut him down? Think about it. Leia was captured, maybe dead. Alderaan was destroyed. Darth Vader had him cornered. No escape and the rebellion may be over. Then he saw Luke AND Leia alive with Artoo with the plans about to escape. Obi wan WON and outmaneuvered Vader. He smiled.

Couple of things about droids. The R2 units function is for navigation and mechanics. The plug into fighters like xwings and help plot a course for the pilot. They also perform maintenance and repair tasks. The are made specifically to communicate with other machines, which is why they "talk" in beeps and whistles. Humans cannot understand the language of R2 units, but when R2 is plugged into the xwing, there is an interface that translates R2s beeps and whistles into text. It’s a small moment and a lot of people overlook it because of the big twist, but I love that Vader doesn’t kill Admiral Piett at the end despite doing it to numerous officers previously. It shows that he’s too rattled or at least distracted by his son to be his usual tyrant self.

Luke's recklessness and flippant attitude were a significant concern to Yoda because of Anakin's history with anger and the dark side of the force. Yoda had to fear training another Jedi who could also become a Sith Lord like Darth Vader. If one never outgrows their reckless and cavalier want for fleeting excitement, one can never learn to appreciate the beauty and peace of contentment.

I've always loved the moment where Darth Vader lowers the gun of the bounty hunter. It's such a small moment but very telling! He tells the most skilled shooter to stand down and let's Chewie rage. Because he know that Han Solo will try to calm him down, he wants to both give him the chance to do that because he know he will. Killing Chewie serves no purpose and would only enrage Han and make him less likely to cooperate. So he lets him make that choice, he lets him suffer. It's this tactical wisdom combined with the tendrils of the dark side that give it a hint of cold malice that tells you SO much about his character, just from these small moments! Same with the "apology accepted, commander Nida" line. It's with these small moments of tenderness, irony and even some sense of humor that make it very clear why Darth Vader was and is so popular and such an icon in pop culture!

Yep, he was the one needing to be rescued. Vader was NEVER in any danger, he doesn't even use both hands on his lightsaber for most of the fight. He was feeling out Luke's skill and then playing with him and winding him up to try and get him to access the dark side. Arguably even the reveal was deliberately timed to hit as hard as possible, emotionally.

Very enjoyable reaction (and post-reaction thoughts) - again! I think the overall context from the first two films (Episodes 4 and 5) were: there weren’t two, but four different people who all knew who Vader was, and who kept it from Luke: - Obi-Wan - Yoda - Uncle Owen - Aunt Beru In a universe overwhelmingly populated by creeps, punks and other bad guys, these four stand out as sober, responsible, conscientious people. Why would these sober, responsible, conscientious people (all of whom strike us as being basically honest) ALL lie to Luke about something so important? My read is that, minimizing the chance of Luke going to the Dark Side, was part of it, but perhaps a minor part. (It’s unclear if Owen and Beru ever knew anything about the force, let alone the dangers of the Dark Side.) I think a motivation that all four of Luke’s caregivers had, was to protect him. Not only to protect him from physical threats, but also, from permanent emotional/psychological damage. “Actually… yeah, your father is still alive. He’s one of the most evil men who ever lived, second in power only to the Emperor himself. He led an attack against the Jedi which killed most of them, including children. His actions led to the destruction of the Republic, a representative form of government that stood for a thousand years, and replaced it with a brutal dictatorship. Your father and the Emperor are the main reason why we all live under tyranny and oppression. Huge numbers of people, if they knew who you were, would try to recruit you, capture you or kill you as leverage because of your connection. Have a nice day.” Life is hard enough as it is, without having a kid being burdened with that. …Do we agree on the general point that sometimes, lying for the greater good becomes ethically mandatory? OK. All four people closest to Luke, had to ask themselves, “What’s in Luke’s best interest?” (and Obi-Wan & Yoda also had to ask themselves, ‘What’s in the galaxy’s best interest?’ also. ) All four made the same decision.

I think you are spot on with the reasons not to tell Luke. Until you've trained Luke for a while and taught him about the evils of the dark side how safe would it be to tell a dirt-poor kid who's never even heard of the force that his real father, who he's never met, basically rules the galaxy and think that kid isn't going to be tempted to go and join him? I don't think that Owen and Beru knew that he was Vader though. I think they knew he was a Jedi and thought that it got him killed. They wanted to keep Luke as far away from that life as possible.

Since the empire was already there, it really made no sense to fire on the falcon since it was a trap. Some have theorized that the only way he could warn them off was to fire at them, hoping they would abort, but when the ship reached the inner perimeter, it had to be allowed to land.

The real answer is that when the first movie was written, Vader wasn't Luke's dad. That decision was made during the writing of Empire strikes back. Which left them the problem of why didn't Obi-Wan tell him. The easy answer to that is to say that 20 minutes after meeting Luke wasn't the right time to let him know that his dad is space Hitler.

51:26 Was a scene I never quite understood when I was younger, but now its fascinating how many layers to it there are. - Luke sees himself inside the mask. The potential for him to become evil. He hasn't recognised the potential for his own darkness inside him yet. - It also foreshadows Vader being his father. Luke's face being inside Vader's mask shows a direct connection between the two of them. - At the midpoint of not just Empire, but the entire trilogy, it changes the struggle of the story. From fighting external evil to facing internal evil. From Luke aspiring to be his father to him having to realise who his father really is. - Without spoiling anything for the next film, there are a few interesting things to note. Luke fails this challenge in the cave because he walked in with his weapons and struck first. Keep that in mind...

For one, it wouldn't be a great way to start his journey by telling him "Sorry kid, your dad is the guy leading the empire you're fighting." Knowing this would've distracted Luke and made his training that much more difficult. He might've even sought out Vader sooner and been swayed to the dark side. As for the comment of the U.S. having military bases in many countries as an intimidation tactic, you are incorrect. Many of those countries want the U.S. there. The reason is twofold. If the country is attacked, the U.S. will back them in a war. The second is that the cost of protecting the country is shifted to the U.S. For example, if the U.S. left South Korea, North Korea will invade as soon as they have the chance. The U.S. military is the only thing stopping them from invading. As soon as the U.S. pulled out of the Ukraine, Russia invaded within days of the pullout, 10 days later. The only thing preventing China from invading Taiwan is the U.S. military's presence in the country.

Methinks that's exactly what the US and its allies want us to think 🤔 ask the citizens, and I betcha way more of them would agree that it's an intimidation tactic. Even the way you describe it shows that it is. Without the U.S. military there, Japan would basically be defenseless due to the agreements set forth when Japan surrendered at WWII. After the Iraq war, everyone knew that Syrai was trying to get a foothold in Iraq, but what prevented Syria from going to war with Iraq was the presence of the U.S. military.

@@MegMageReacts No. There may be some citizens who want the U.S. military out of their countries, but the governmente want them to stay. It's expensive to build a defense force. And it's cheaper when another country, a superpower, does that defense for you. I have mixed feelings about the U.S. being overseas. Let's say you are an immigrant from the Ukraine. Would you want your country to be protected by the U.S, where you have friends and family still there? I am an immigrant from South Korea and have many friends and family there, and I know that North Korea will invade as soon as the U.S. pulls out. There was anti-American sentiment early in the 2000s in South Korea due to the Olympics and then a few years later due to two young girls being run over by a tank. And some people wanted the U.S. military to leave after those incidents. But the vast majority of the citizens wanted the U.S. military to stay. I hate that the U.S. governement is spending so much money on the military, but at the same time, I don't want my family and friends killed from a North Korean invasion. Half of the population of South Korea live just 35 miles away from the DMZ. And with the North Korean army having 3x as many soldiers as the South Korean army, millions would be killed from an invasion in just the first hour. America has immigrants from many countries and I'm pretty certain that they want their friends and family in the countries they came from to be safe.

The bounty hunter Boba Fett was originally voiced by Peter Greenville and redubbed by Temura Morrison in the 2004 DVD release for reasons you'll understand when you get to Episode II. This movie has the least controversial Lucas edits of the OT. Cloud City was originally completely enclosed so knocking out a few walls to make windows makes it feel less crowded. Also replacing the half-woman, half-chimp thing that was the Emperor with Sir Ian McDairmond and the aforementioned redubbing of Fett for continuity.

I posted this reply to another comment, but I'll post it here too because I think it's even more of a fun fact. The "fact" about Luke's face and the wampa attack in this movie is just a widely believed urban legend. George Lucas, the director of this movie Irvin Kershner and even Mark Hamill himself have all been asked about this and denied it. George Lucas was asked and he said the wampa attack was in his original script for Empire Strikes Back which was written before Mark Hamill's accident. He just needed a way for Luke to be in distress when he sees a vision of Obi Wan telling him to go to Yoda. Irvin Kershner was asked about it and said that there was nothing done to the movie due to Mark's accident and that all his scars in this movie are makeup that was added to show the effects of the wampa attack. Mark Hamill was asked about it in an interview all the way back in the 80's I believe, you can even find videos of the interview on KZfaq. He said that he was in a minor accident and got minor injuries and somehow people turned that in to he received major injuries and then somehow that turned in to him getting facial reconstruction surgery. He said that none of that is true. He was even in another movie called Corvette Summer which was filmed after his accident but more recently after it than Empire Strikes Back and he looks completely normal in that movie.

It was an accident in a Corvette not a motorcycle

Small detail that i rarely see mentioned: Yoda tells Luke that a Jedi never uses the force for attack, only knowledge and defense. Vader doesn’t have that restriction and starts throwing pieces of machinery at Luke with the force

49:46 Little did she know how very accurate that was... 56:08 See, the dark side is seductive! 1:14:17 You didn't like that one? It's an Iconic line! 1:15:44 if she only knew "Vader" is german for Daddy, she'd know it's really Darth daddy. 1:24:04 it is rare to see someone surprised by the biggest twist that rocked the world 43 years ago. I count myself lucky for whitnessing it!

I think that that whole thing with 'Vader' being the word for father in the Dutch is a fortunate coincidence, cause it was just supposed to sound ominous, a short form of 'invader'. George Lucas has a gift of pulling things from his behind and than proclaiming 'it was planned all along' :) He had no idea where he was going with the story when he wrote the first Star Wars. I mean, Leia kissed Luke here :) Ah, good old George, you just gotta love him.

Yoda and Ben could not tell him because his training was incomplete. He could’ve easily followed Darth Vader to the dark side. They needed him to be prepared enough before the fight with Darth Vader.

George Lucas didn't originally plan for there to be a relationship between Luke and Vader. That possibility came up during filming when they needed a climactic point to drive the action forward. The same with the relationship between Luke and Leia. They needed something that would get Luke out of hiding, and they came up with that. When Obi-Wan smiled just before Vader killed him, it was because he knew of aspects of the Force that Vader did not realize existed. That's why he told Vader that he would become more powerful than Vader could imagine. Those aspects include being able to communicate through the Force, as during the trench run, and the ability to become a Force ghost. All of that took special training that Vader did not have. The Dark Side of the Force is selfishness, hate, anger, and a desire for power. Once one turns to the Dark Side, it's practically impossible to turn back.

Perhaps Obi Wan was afraid that Luke would have a hard time not to take things personal if he knew Vader was his father. If Vader had doubts about Luke's father, the Emperor told him to search his feelings and to realize he knew it was true. Great storytelling. These original movies were such a revelation. Nothing like that had been seen on film before.

You mentioned several characters similar to Luke attacking the AT-AT walker, but the one who really "copied" the attack was Legolas in The Lord of the Rings, the Return of the King attacking the Oliphaunt (giant elephant). In fact, several of Legolas' actions in that movie are clearly based on Luke as if they were elves.
