She was also Alderaan's representative in the Imperial Senate until Vader arrested her. * Darth Vader isn't technically a military leader or a political leader in this one. He is pretty much the Emperor's personal enforcer and representative. That gray area is part of why the admiral back-talked him until he got choked. * Of course R2-D2 is sassy. Otherwise they wouldn't have had to *bleep* out all of his lines.

As you say, the new trilogy just misses that "spark". You can have the exact same story in 2 movies and tell immediately who told it with passion and who didn't. As people often say "star wars was George Lucas' baby" and it shows in every second of this movie!

Just imagine the reactions of audiences in 1977. I was 14 that year. I went out of my mind over Star Wars! It was such a ride of a film. People saw it ten, twenty times. Just such an amazing experience! One of my all time favorite movies of all time.

Interesting bit of trivia. In 1977, cynical gunslingers like Han were the norm for protagonists, and Luke and Obi-Wan were considered throwbacks to an earlier era of idealistic heroes, hence why there's tension between them at the start. In fact the whole film is deliberately aiming to emulate the pulp sci-fi stories of early 20th century cinema, mixed together with serializd war films and epic Samurai films. Its just interesting to think about how much of an oddball this was seen as when it first came out, considering how much of a cultural impact it has even today.

This is actually the first movie I ever saw, that I can remember anyway. I was very little and my parents were up late watching something, and I didn’t want to go to sleep when people were up doing stuff of course. I crawled down the hallway real low trying to hide, but they caught me peeking out into the living room. Rather than being mad, my parents were like “Ohhhh, you wanna watch Star Wars?” and started the movie over from the beginning so I could watch with them. I was hooked. They showed me all three originals, and then the prequels came out a couple years later and I made them take me to see Phantom Menace over ten times. lol I can honestly say Star Wars changed my whole life.

It was just titled 'Star Wars' in 1977. I saw it in the theater right around my 5th birthday. I wasn't super excited going in. I think my Dad (RIP) was the one that was excited. But actually seeing it in 1977 was a profound experience. A religious experience you could say. The special effects and the quality just blew everything else away. George Lucas made his own special effects company for the film. It was shot on brand new film it was only available in certain theaters. I think that added to the hysteria. It was hard to get tickets. Every theater that had Star Wars was packed every night. I guess people were seeing it more than once. I was a child and was only able to see it once until the VCR became a thing. I loved Star Wars but I could only see it once. Star Blazers (anime) was much bigger. Star Blazers was the English version of Space Battleship Yamato. I could watch that 5 days a week.

OK, I am subscribed. You won me over with that wonderful reaction. I saw this movie the week it came out and half the audience had already seen it at least once. They were booing the villains and cheering the heroes. The whole audience cried at the end. I forgot it was a movie. Did you notice how clean and shiny the droids were at the end? And, how beat up they were all through the movie? This is a place and time that is lived in - everything is used. I loved that about it. I look forward to your next reaction.

The "smash or pass" in the Cantina scene is one of the funniest things I've seen a reactor do. Well done! (Also, the light sabre battle is underwhelming compared to later movies because Ben is old and Darth Vader is more machine than man. ) Also, in the version you watched, Lucas added several special effects and a couple scenes, including the Jabba the Hut scene with Han. The only sin Lucas committed in this version is the scene with Han and Greedo in the Cantina. I the original, real version, Han not only shot first; only Han shot. The new version is an abomination.

This was the first "feel good" movie of the 1970s since the end of the war in Vietnam led to a dark, dystopian period in Hollywood (hence why there's so many horror movies from the 70s). As far as lore goes, there's the pre-Disney Expanded Universe (1978-2012) and the Disney canon (2013-present). Some of the old EU stuff has been integrated back into canon by Lucasfilm in other media (for example, the main baddie of the Mandoverse live action series was introduced in a series of novels in 1991).

In 1977 I was 7 years old and went to my local theatre to watch Star Wars with my Dad. Before the film started they played the theme tune in the theatre and hit a single white light onto a disco ball making stars fly all around the auditorium. This alone was some never seen before theatrics. Then the film played and basically blew our minds. No one could quite believe what we had just witnessed. Bear in mind, up to then, spaceships were made of cereal packets and egg boxes painted metallic silver (see Blake 7, Buck Rogers etc.). The special effects of Industrial Light and Magic were so good that honestly it would be like if someone presented you tomorrow with a fully working teleporter! It was literally insane. It took the rest of the world a full fourteen years until Terminator II in 1991 to produce anything remotely close to the effects seen in the Star Wars trilogy...

I saw this in theaters in 1977. I was seven and had never seen anything like this because nothing was like this. From the moment the Star Destroyer engulfed the screen to Chewy getting snubbed for a medal, I was utterly captivated. The only way to describe it was pure magic.

That has to be my favorite “Han saving Luke” reaction.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about 50 miles away ..._ *THERE WAS NO EPISODE TITLE* The studio didn't think this film would make much money. Lucas was crossing his fingers that it didn't bomb. For all he knew, Lucas was making one standalone movie. "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added in later releases, to be in line with the numbering adopted with Episode V. I first saw _Star Wars_ in 1977, at the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, US (a city of about 1M). The Indian Hills was one of the last remaining Cinerama theaters in existence (it's long gone, now). Cinerama was an experimental widescreen format seen in the 1950s and 1960s. It had an extremely curved screen, such that films shot in Cinerama used _three cameras_ and _three projectors_ : one for the center of the screen and one for each side. Everything had to be constantly synchronized so that the film looked normal onscreen. If you see Cinerama films on DVD/Bluray/streaming today, it often looks distorted on the left and right. This is caused by converting a curved film to a flat screen. So there I was at the Indian Hills at the tender age of 12 -- the film's precise target demographic. The Indian Hills seated 810 patrons: 662 on the main floor and 148 in the balcony. It was completely packed, as was every screening of _Star Wars_ in every theater in the world, until the film left theaters. I'd gotten to the theater rather late, forcing me to sit in the center seat of row one. This turned out to be fantastically good bad luck. Today, the center of row one is a terrible seat due to parallax distortion. In a theater the size of the Indian Hills, that distortion didn't exist because the screen was far enough away from the seats. However, it was close enough so that it filled my field of view from top to bottom. The screen was large and curved enough so that it filled my field of view from periphery to periphery. _Star Wars_ was shot in CinemaScope, a more popular widescreen format that we still see today. While not technically the same as Cinerama, it still lent itself well to that screen. I watched _Star Wars_ with the film filling my entire field of view from top-to-bottom and side-to-side. I didn't have to turn my head to watch it unless I wanted to, and I usually didn't. It was an astonishingly immersive experience. Not even IMAX comes close. Add to that the massive audience reaction that shouldn't be overlooked. It was a shared experience that I've only seen at _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ on their opening nights, when there were a lot of fans present. This audience reaction happened at every screening, in every theater, everywhere in the world, until _Star Wars_ left the screens. Imagine 810 people all cheering, clapping, jumping to their feet, and occasionally crying all at once. The shared experience was amazing, as it fed on itself. No one held back, it just kept growing and growing until the destruction of the Death Star -- which prompted massive roaring from the audience. The film itself was like nothing put to the screen at that time. While cinematically based on old _Flash Gordon_ and _Buck Rogers_ movie serials of the 1930s, this was a big-budget, big-screen version like nothing anyone had ever seen before. It completely changed science fiction on the movie screen. Until that time, you occasionally got a good science fiction film, but they tended to be years apart. After _Star Wars_ , there were multiple good science fiction movies every year, a trend that continues to this very day. There would be no modern _Star Trek_ without _Star Wars_ . _Star Wars_ was such a massive hit for 20th Century-Fox that Paramount quickly looked around and said, "Aha! We have this _Star Trek_ thing that Trekkies are always saying they want more of. Let's make it into a movie!" Thus _Star Trek - The Motion Picture_ was released in 1979. Without that, there would be no _Star Trek_ today. _Star Wars_ changed filmmaking from a business perspective. The film grabbed audiences like nothing seen in the entire history of cinema. While _Jaws_ was technically the first summer blockbuster, _Star Wars_ cemented summer as the time to release action-heavy, family-friendly films. The special effects of _Star Wars_ were utterly innovative, and the tools created by the likes of John Dykstra became commonplace in films that don't even have special effects. Almost all special effects in the Original Trilogy were achieved either in-camera, with optical effects, miniatures, extremely detailed paintings, or a combination of those techniques. CGI that allows an entire film to be shot on a green screen wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye. In 1977, the most advanced computers were the size of an SUV and didn't have the computing power of your phone. CGI as a primary filmmaking technique wasn't popularized until _Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow_ in 2004. By then, computing power/square centimeter had skyrocketed exponentially. The special effects spawned Industrial Light and Magic, a company created and owned by George Lucas. ILM is still in existence today, constantly innovating with new technologies to create visual effects for many, many films and TV series. From it's inception, ILM has been considered the gold standard of VFX companies. In short, this film was nothing like what had come before. It changed _everything about cinema_ . And I got to see it with an audience of 810, on a screen so immersive that I got nauseous during the Trench Run.

This movie has been remastered several times and updated with CGI and new scenes. The Jabba scene was originally cut from the movie because they did not have the technology to create the character believably.

That final ship battle is one of the most well-executed finales I've ever seen, from the pace to the tension to the music (John Williams gives us some of his best work throughout this franchise). I can't believe how much you seemed to surmise about the lore and the world, and however much you've yet to discover ;) I'm looking forward to your reaction to the next film! I loved every second of it and I shared it with my mom and she had a blast with some of your comments, taking her back to her time watching Star Wars for the first time. It's great to have you onboard~ My favorite character in the entire franchise by far is Luke Skywalker. I love him being a sensitive, kind, sassy, dramatic, good-hearted brat. I love your intrigue for Anakin Skywalker being mentioned and I look forward to you being able to learn more about him later~ I'm glad you were pulled in by the vibe Luke, Leia and Han have. They're all messy and sassy and catty, but they love each other so much! My favorite interpretation to describe their dynamic is that all three of them think they're the smart one dealing with two idiots. XD I love all the characters very much but, after Luke, I'd say my second place is a toss up between Darth Vader, Leia, and R2-D2. The characters are more sassy and dramatic than people expect them to be. While I very much hate the sequel trilogy for its poor writing, I'm glad for it in this case to have such a delightful new fan. I hope you have a great journey with the rest of the story and I look forward to watching more! (Also, my favorite part of the franchise is Episode 6, so I eagerly look forward to that one~!)

to clarify: yeah some stuff was added/remastered in the version you're watching. jabba is the big example (he was played by an actual human originally LOL) but also Mos Eisley city in general looks smaller and there's much less floaty vehicles. the stormtroopers riding that creature when they were searching for the droids earlier was also added. most everything else is the same, which is still unbelievably good IMO. imagine watching that in 1977...

The OG 'Star Wars' trilogy became the most epic movie theater experience for many reasons. What stands out the most for me is the amount of time we all had to wait for each sequel to be released (2 - 3 years). And the buzz/hype during each release was legendary. As a child, I will never forget every moment in each theater and how the audience was absolutely captivated by it all. And let's not forget about the Kenner action figures that owned every Christmas and Birthday celebration. "May the force be with you." 💯📽

This movie was my first cinema experience on the big screen as a kid. To say it was a mind blowing experience is a understatement.

While I prefer the following movies over this one, there is just something SO SPECIAL about the original... STAR WARS. It's just such a good story within itself and such an amazing introduction to iconic villains, heroes, and the Star Wars universe as a whole.

Welcome to the start of the Star Wars journey! As someone who's been on and off as a fan over the years, I'm very interested to hear your thoughts on the original six films, which are kind of the bread and butter of Star Wars. (No spoilers) Each film becomes more complex and grand in scale as the scope for the story and world grows, and imo it's interesting to see that initial evolution of the series from starting out as a fun, Flash Gordon inspired serial adventure in 1977 to a full on apocalyptic opera about the rise and fall of people and systems by 2005.

i was there in 1977. a 6 year old boy in England standing in a very long cinema queue in very warm weather, waiting to see something that turned out to be culturally huge. i was hooked immediately, and had to wait 3 years to see the sequel, then another 3 years for the conclusion. if you want the lore, watch 4 (which you just have), 5(The Empire Strikes Back), 6(The Return of the Jedi), then 1, 2, 3. in my opinion they are the only ones that count. they were George Lucas's children. hope you enjoy. peace

Lucas always humanized his robots in Star Wars...droids definitely are people to him. I always half-expected R2D2 to end up being a secret Force user by the end of the series, he always pops up at the right time to save the day with his own heroics.

OKAY... First of all, I LOVED how you cared so much for this. I saw this in 1977 with my dad. There were no previews, and my dad and I went in totally blind. I was the third child at the time, and my dad figured out early that I loved movies, so he would bring me to EVERYTHING. Neither one of knew that this movie would change my life. Star Wars continues to this day, and I still like everything, but at 8 years old, this movie blew my mind wide open.

The thing about the series starting with Episode 4 was that it was a little tongue in cheek reference to the Flash Gordon serials that would play in front of movies in the 30s and 40s. Unless you went to the movies every week, you’d only see one episode, say 4 of 9, and each episode would start with a blurb of text that recapped the previous episode, which is also why Star Wars always opens with a title crawl.

I was born in 1978 and the first movie I remember seeing in theatres was The Empire Strikes Back in 1981. Watching this with you, like this, feels like I get to see them again for the first time. I can remember being 10 years old and my parents did not want to give any money to see a movie I had already seen twice . My older sister put $10 in my hand As she left for the beach . Waited in line for 2 hours with my friends . When she came home i started to thank her she put her hand up and said “ Don’t expect anything on your birthday” with a big smile . That is what I remember most about the first movie is friends and my sister understanding it meant more than movie to me . ( she did give me my birthday present months later 😀 )

I was 12 when I saw this 8 times the summer of 77. I did everything a 12 year old can do to raise money. I had two goals that summer. To buy a new pair of Pro Keds sneakers and see this movie as many times as I could. The lines were around the block every time I went. Great reaction. It made me feel like 12 again.

Empire Strikes Back is my favorite of all of them but this one is very good too. Everything is on point. The effects, music, and sound all work together to create something incredible.

32:32 Mark! Yep! Those shock wave rings were added years later! The original explosions were models destroyed with chemicals detonated inside of them! They knew that people were used to seeing vehicles exploding because of gasoline and would recognize a gas bomb! So they experimented. One "TIE Fighter" gets to have a spectacular green explosion thanks to magnesium powder! 😮

Oh God please play Knights of the Old Republic. You like RPGs, you will love KotOR.

57:50 When I was younger, compared to (then) the other five films, I used to think this final battle wasn't as exciting due to not having any sort of lightsaber duel. But as I got older I began to appreciate it much more for how it perfectly fits Luke's character growth and arc in this film. He's spent his whole life living in boredom as a farmer on a static, lifeless desert planet. He wants adventure, to join his friends in the wider world and fly. In this battle, he gets all that under intense stakes. Luke is impatient, and so the trench run in the final battle is specifically designed to test his patience. And he succeeds through thinking beyond his conscious mind, and trusting his instincts, just as Ben Kenobi instructed him to do. By putting away the targeting computer, he's the one in control of his destiny, a far cry from him being doomed to be a farmer for the rest of his life. It's great writing.

THANK YOU for being one of the few reactors who can understand the difference between the way Leia and Luke feel about each other and Han and Leia. Its always been obvious to me that Luke is squarely in the Friend Zone.

This came out during my freshman year of college. When Christmas break came, the lines in LA were around the block. I went back to my parents' place in Virginia and went to see it with a high school friend. We just stayed in the theater and watched it a second time. It was stunning.

It's fun any time i see a new fan to this series. The fact, that i know how the Clone Wars went down is who Darth Vader is, I'm so interested for you to get to that tv show. It's a 7 season animated greatness and i just love the Star Wars universe. And OMG you will learn about most of your questions, (mostly in the prequles). The Force, you WILL learn more, just like Luke does (and will). What i can tell you now: It's kind of a god, that created all, the dark and the light. But both sides of it are equally strong. Everybody has this force in them, but not all people can wield it, you have to believe in it (and you have to have a bit of a talent, someone can have more elements of it in them and those people can use it better how have more imnotgonnaspoilmore in them)

For the episodes. Back in the 30s-40s they used to have serials that would play before the actual movies. Each week would play an episodes like 10-20mins of the movie. You would have to go back each week to find out what happened next. So this was supposed to be like you are jumping in the middle of the serial.

Just discovered you watching these. I saw this at 5 years old in the theater. It was mind blowing and changed everything in cinema, scifi, our childhoods and pop culture. We literally had to wait 2-3 years between the original movies. I say 2-3 years because how films were distributed to theaters was different back then and took time to circulate a bit depending where you lived.

Since nobody is mentioning it: Despite all the additions to the series in the current Disney Canon, the main canon of the series to the Creator George Lucas is still the original six films, and The Clone Wars series. Lucas and the cast have been quite vocally against what 7-9 did to the series.

I was about 9 when my Dad brought me to see this. I remember it like yesterday . The "remastered" which you just watched is digitally enhanced with enhanced stuff. Us kids back then... it was mind blowing. Glad you enjoyed it!

I was 5 when Ep IV (just called "Star Wars" then) was in theaters. Our babysitter took me and my older brother to go see it because she was cool. 😉 It was amazing and something that was new and unique at the time. I was instantly hooked and have been a Star Wars fan ever since. I think Rogue One will probably be more interesting after you've been through the original trilogy and the prequels. EDIT: Oh, and R2 is the true hero. You are correct.

You've just described the reason why the originals work, and the sequels don't. The sequels are mostly a deconstruction of the originals; they're theoretically for fans, but they're really trying to create new fans, and each movie goes in a different direction, and it's all just a jumbled mess. The originals just are what they are - they're aimed at anybody; anyone can get into them, whether you're a 'Star Wars' super-fan, or you've never seen them in your life. They're accessible, on a basic level that I fear is being left farther and farther behind these days.

The actors were very young in this film. Carrie Fisher - 19/20 Mark Hamill - 26 Harrison Ford - 35 Mark even at 26 still looks like a baby, both Leia and Luke are 19 in the film. Its also pretty common for alot of 20 year olds to look like 17 to 19 year olds depending on there height, shaven face etc. Harrison Ford could pass as younger as well in this film, 35 is still young but he's always aged well.

I met Anthony Daniels, C-3P0's actor at a convention earlier this year; such a nice and humble man, quintessential British gentleman, but even he had a few snarky things to say about the Rise of Skywalker and what a mess the script was. He has a lot of love and appreciation for playing a character that so many people find endearing and memorable.

It’s sad what you saw were ep 7,8,9. Ep 4,5,6 are classic, and 1,2,3 are great backstory (even tho jar jar is very cheesy). IMHO, I prefer to pretend 7,8,9 don’t exist. You’re in for quite a ride. You may want to consider the clone wars series (or at least the episodes that contribute to the larger story) and then mandalorian and all the other spin offs

Thrilled I found you. You provided the most viscerally joyful and genuine emotional reaction I think I've ever seen.. Incredible. I was eleven when I saw this in 1977. I was in the front row when the huge star destroyer went over head and my jaw dropped..I was hooked from that moment.. Can't wait to follow your journey. Just realize Rogue One is why Leia had the plans to destroy the death star. Think about that!

A bit of fun trivia. When the Stormtroopers enter the room with C3PO and R2-D2, one of them whacks his head on the door. When the updated version was released, not only did they not remove it, but they added a sound effect.
