First Urbnsurf Sydney Review Impressions and Tour on Opening Day of New Surf Park

A new surf park has opened in Sydney, Australia. Urbnsurf Sydney, at the Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush, is hoping to be the best surf park in Australia. And potentially, the best surf park in the world. In this video, travel vlogger Chris Stead takes surfers through an Urbnsurf Sydney tour. And gives you his initial Urbnsurf Sydney review impressions.

As someone that has surfed the Melbourne pool a few times and really enjoyed it But - it’s really important that if you fall off - Don’t try paddling straight back out or across the pool, because you will be in the way of the next surfer & it can get really dangerous. Iv seen some real carnage with multiple surfers falling and trying to get across and the following surfers having to doge them or run over them - It happened to me and I ended up loosing a fin and wasting time while I went in to get another board. Your instinct is to try paddle across but is it really is much easier to paddle in towards the beach then let the current along the wall take you back out and there are plenty of waves to go around. By the way the bottom is solid cement so if you hit it - it hurts ! So make sure you choose a level that you’re confident in and I’d advise an easier level if it’s your first session just to get the hang of it. Before you try the next level up.

Good tips, many thanks for sharing. I did notice that a few of the guys that didn't make the tube section went all the way in then circled around. Looked like a decent amount of water moving up the channel. Proper rip.

Agreed. I noticed quite a few of the surfers in e the first half trying to get back out over the shoulder. Go in and paddle around! Hopefully they'll have a few enforcers from the wall like they do in Melbourne.

@@motivatedtravel yeah about wait deep but it sucks up a bit more when they turn the barrel option on - iv hit the bottom a once or twice when when I didn’t make the tube and got sucked over the falls and slammed into the bottom.

I must admit, I was hoping for something bigger. I was at a place in Phuket that reckons it can do 3m waves. But they had it set up as basically a close out.

@@motivatedtravel I'd love to see that North Qld plunger style one everywhere, or that Texas one with the ramp section. But we've got too many lawyers and regulations in Aus, I doubt we'll get many decent wave pool options bigger than 2ft.

@@reddysteddy2195 I was supposed to go try the Plunge pool a year or so ago and it fell apart last minute when I couldn't get flights sorted. Super keen to see it now and compare. Will see what I can do. From what I understand it was a huge wait between sets with that one.

Looks like with a crew of say 15 surfers out it will be like a Snapper dodge fest as I noticed most people that fell either stood there like stunned mullets or tried to paddle out across the break and basically getting in the way. As someone else pointed out it's probably best practice to ride the next whitewash in and use the wall current to get back to takeoff. Another foot or so would make it better too by the looks.

Interesting you say that. Most of the people in the water were WSL surfers. Maybe they just back the next person to miss, but should just be bus-driving it straight in!

I think its great we have theses wave pools but think the Surf lakes design at Yepoon is much better. More variety of waves and many more surfers can surf at the same time.

Agreed, that waves looks like it has more potential and could be more fun. But I've been told the waits between sets are too long at present for it to work commercially. Hopefully it has improved since I heard that.

wavegarden pool as we have in the alps. your enjoying that bigger bay it looks great. 110 a hour is comparable to our price here. we have a mega barrel session. top to bottom draining overhead barrel

Looks like an adult is $110/hour for an Advanced session. Or you can buy 10 sessions pack for $980. So around $10 a wave. It's a bit crazy.

Cheers mate. Didn't mention water temp, but I think it will be ambient and similar to local pools. So likely down to 17 in winter and up to 23 in peak summer. It was nice as this April.

No heating, so small body of water fluctuates a lot with changes in ambient temperature. In Melbourne in winter the wavepool is a fair bit colder than the ocean.

Yes the bottom is concrete! - The wave pool is great fun but be aware there have been a few injuries in Melbourne from collision’s with other surfers (see my earlier comment) or the bottom or the wall . it’s important to choose a level suiting your skills and wear a helmet - while the advanced wave aren’t that big it does pack a punch, so don’t underestimate it - also boards do get damaged especially if you fall near the wall as the board tends to get dragged along it - so something to factor in if your renting a board is that you will pay for any damage you do to it. The last few times I surfed at Most at Melbourne many of the rental boards had multiple fixed dings proving how often it happens. I’m not wanting to put people off as it is great fun but like anything you need to understand the risks.

Awesome insight, thanks for adding to the discussion. As a bodyboarder, I never really think about damage or collisions. They did say that they give helmets to everyone who surfs at no cost. So, they're onto the fact they don't want to be liable or seen not to act.

What is the difference between advanced and expert then?

From what I understand the difference is the amount of people in the water. So Expert you're paying for the right to be a group of 12. But on Advanced it's 18. Someone else was telling me, however, that even within a mode like Advanced, they have a few gradings they can apply. So perhaps it's max Advanced in Expert.

Can't say having never been to Melbourne, but they didn't specifically point it out any point, so I suspect it won't be too much different. The pool anyway, the complex as a whole might be bigger. They said it's the same size as the SCG.

Yeah the rip along the wall runs pretty fast as the water being pushing in by the waves has to go back out so once your in it you hardly have to paddle.

@@motivatedtravel Design was experimental but others have produced far better models and been built, location with no safe intersection for traffic to enter 100klm zone, water discharge(saline) into local creeks and groundwater, accessibility on a rough dirt road, appearance is rusty old with dirty water, public use(none), publicity has changed numerous times from experimental to publicly accessible then back to private, history has been drawn out and contentious with many objections, technology used is old world stuff, cost to local community(subsidised water)...etc.

They can't have sand because the waves all move in one direction. Basically sand would just end up piled on the beach. But I wonder if there is something softer than concrete that could be used. Some sort of hard sponge or rubber.

It's a good question. In the notes that sent me after the event, there was no mention of an Air Mode. It must be by special request or for competition. Guessing it would be expensive. I'll ask for more details.

@motivatedtravel The only decent wave pool on the planet is Surf Lake in Yepoon. This is the gold standard. It has the potential (as technology advances) to produce waves of any size. Bigger & better in the not too distant future. Sorry Kelly (and everyone else). You've all been outdone.
