If you want an example of sea monster that isn't evil, there is hippocampus from Greek mythology. It's a friendly sea horse (not THAT seahorse) that helps sailors who are lost at sea and is a symbol of hope and good omen.

Fun fact about the kappa: it’s powers come from a magic liquid that rests in a plate above their heads, you can make a kappa harmless by bowing to them, as they are polite creatures they will bow back and spill the liquid on their heads, effectively making them harmless.

Not sure if this is true, but I saw somewhere that the origins came from dead bodies in the rivers of Japan, back when killing children to keep within the legal limit was common, parents would tell their children that the bodies were kappas to keep them from getting close/messing with them, some depictions look scarily similar to how a partially decomposed water-logged corpse looks

"Kappa steals the liver" Yeahhh, some sources say it's way weirder than that. What they steal isn't liver, but "shirikodama", meaning "butt soul". They steal your soul. Through your butt. Apparently, this is because drowned corpses have loose buttholes, so ancient Japanese thought they must have been fisted by turtle-duck men.

@@Eloraurora A wrath that cannot be equaled. At any rate, I’m a Christian and I know to take the Bible with a grain of salt (or a lethal dose at times). It supposed to be about being a good person. Unfortunately, a bunch of sanctimonious asshats have continued to take everything out of context at best, and legitimately ignore passages that don’t suit them at worst. Actually, it’s probably even worse when they use the Bible (definitely out of context as well) to justify being asshats.

@ShadowknightEX
@ShadowknightEX 2 жыл бұрын
@@heinshaaine8153 well, coming from where we are today, yes, it is a bit illogical at the very least. But coming from the timelines where most religions were created, it helped explain things that we couldn’t yet answer. I think a reason why even today people accept religion is the notion of an afterlife, as well as humanity’s documented psychological need to answer authority. Basically it’s nice to think that there’s good reason to not be an ass in life because you will be rewarded in death if you follow a righteous path, and it’s also nice to think that no matter how much authority a bastard such as a king, or your country’s government, that there is a being with far more authority and power than they can hope for. I studied psychology and sociology pretty heavily in college, and that kind of helps me get into the heads of these kinds of people.

I actually really like ancient monster legends. A lot come from misidentification such as sea boars likely being thought up after seeing a baleen whale carcass. "What are we most familiar with that has tusks? Oh! Boars! Its a big boar in the sea!" Or cases of what I like to call "what if but bigger" syndrome. "Woah! Those things with tentacles are weird. Wouldn't it be scarry if we were fish? Or what if this.... but bigger. And we were its prey". Humans scared of things leads to what if but bigger syndrome. And I love that.

2:37 I love how he took an amon amarth album cover and thought we wouldn't notice. also why didn't he tell the full story about the kappa, they're from japanese folklore and they have a lil dent on the top of their head where there's water. the water acts as their life force. if you'd encounter a kappa the only thing you had to was to bow since it would feel honor bound to bow back and thus it's head would drain and it would die, but if you saved it by filling it with new water it would then become a protective spirit for you and your family.

As far as I heard Kappas attract children to their river territory, drown them and eat their soul. They have a dent in the head that when filled with water grants them magical abilities. The wrestle thing is because when you fight one you are supposed to bow first, so that the kappa bows too and the water in the dent falls down making them weaker. They are supposed to eat cucumbers, thats why there was a tradition in ancient times to put a plate of cucumbers outside so that the kappa is pleased. But yeah, I wonder what person made such creature up...

As a nord I wanna shed some light on the nordic monsters on this list: Jorgmandr isn't evil, just indifferent. They're sleeping, and will awake to do their own thing at ragnarök. Kraken isn't evil either, just a servant of the Lady of the Sea. In the myths it is _not_ a squid or octopus. Iko-Turso isn't really malicious either, but just the all-father of the nature spirits and has a short temper.

As far as the kappa taking the liver, I think it was from some belief that the liver contained your soul or something to that effect.

You haven't even heard the best part about the Kappa. Legends say they rip your soul out your ass. Also they have the bowl cut because their head literally has a bowl shape in the middle holding water. if you trick a kappa into bowing and spilling the water it will be incapable of moving and thus forced to grant your desires if you refill it's water bowl
@DocApoc
@DocApoc 2 жыл бұрын
They didn't mention the best part of the kappa; they have a bowl-like indentation in their heads filled with water. They also have great manners. If you bow for one, it will bow deeper than you, and spill the water from it's head, which suffocates it.

There are many iterations and interpretacions pf the leviathan, specifically in the bible. It can range from a representacion of the void killed to form the base of the world to a big snake god wrestled with. Sometimes both. Yeah, and the only way they would harm people is by meddling with boats, and even then, assuming they bear as much intelligence as whales, any sinking caused by them would be an accident unless we, being the dumb, excessively prideful and ambitious species we are, go out of our way to hunt them for Chinese horny juice or whatever.

Leviathon wasn’t there for god to “play with.” According to the bible god created it as an example to Job, to show how powerful he was. The Leviathan could not be killed by anything on earth, but god, being greater could “play with it as though a bird” It was a way to prove a point, not a thing of amusement.
