by the way.. one can Staple on canvas over open holes in the sides of wooden boats. when you are trying to refloat them. if you can get the bow up.. you can drag a big piece of canvas or tarp under the bow and lash it to the rail so the sides are now far more water proof.

Builders plastic works a treat too (The stuff you line interior walls with). And you can even get the vaccum of the pumps to suck the material into the holes that need filling. A great example is if you search for "Adventures of Glimt" here on youtube. Two guys raising a traditional wooden Norwegian fishing boat this way.

My Uncle bought a 36 foot shrimp boat in the 70s. He didn't want anyone to steal the batteries so he took them out when he wasn't using the boat. We had a week of heavy rain and since the batteries were not in the boat the bilge pumps didn't work. YEP it sunk at the dock.
@sunbeam88663 жыл бұрын
But just think how much he saved on the batteries! :)

This reminds me of a man in England who had a small 25' canal boat, he decided to install an inboard engine instead of the outboard that was fitted, trying to save money as he was a bit of a skinflint he hired two auto mechanics instead of someone who knew a bit about boats, as the boat was already fitted with a stern tube which was blanked off they proceeded to cut the end off to install the shaft, this did not go well as the boat was in the water, as the water rushed into the boat causing it to sink leaving the two men swimming to the bank and abandoning the project, a few days later the owner rang the local marina and was quoted around a £1000 to crane the boat out and place it on dry land, being a skinflint he decided to ring around different companies to see if anyone would do it cheaper, he found a company who offered to lift the boat for half the original quote, so he employed them, they arrived on time and set about putting on the slings, once this was done they began the lift, unfortunately not having lifted a sunken boat before they just pulled her up in one swift move without allowing the water to drain as she came up, all of a sudden she snapped completely in two, the owner sat on the bank looked on and said well that's that then, he got into his car and i have never seen him to this day, that was over 15 years ago. the moral of the story is always employ someone who knows what they are doing and don't be a skinflint.

Anytime your doing something like this anywhere on the planet, there's the old guy that comes and stands in the way right in the middle of everything. I think there is like a union of them or something. And if you talk to them or tell them to move, they usually speak incoherent jibberish or they are deaf and oblivious.

Maybe if they maintained the hull it wouldn't have leaked. Has it sunk again yet? (How many times?)
@peterpringle41645 жыл бұрын
It’s cost a lot of money to put on the slip to maintain any type of sea crafts putting fuel cost money it’s dead money why I rather a simple out board on a dingy if I want to take time on the water hire a house boat cheaper less of a money pit it’s a shame so many nice boats sink cause of this situation
@FAKE-NAME5 жыл бұрын
@@peterpringle4164 why are you comparing a commercial fishing vessel to house boats and dingy's? Forgot what the proper name for it is but it was most likely a sein boat that now just pays smaller boats like gillnetters for fish and brings the fish to factory for processing.
@peterpringle41645 жыл бұрын
FAKE NAME ok fake name , I welcome your response and provide reasonable feed back any thing that sits in the water more than 6 months ( talking from Australian waters) with wood hulls mainly the weather over time as worked a chef on a paddle steamer that never got scraped or painted it was a shit storm waiting to happen as the captain was explaining now any vessel that u can take out water is great but anything stays in needs to be placed on a slip painted and restored as creaks have parasite know as wood worm that destroys the wood to place n a slip cost a lot money time expensive paint thus my comment if this isn’t self explanatory sorry don’t waste my time writing back telling me something different
@FAKE-NAME5 жыл бұрын
@@peterpringle4164 well the boat is in canadian waters not Australian waters for a start so we don't get wood worm that fast. Second you were comparing a commercial fishing vessel to house boats and dingy's, a dingy can be pulled ashore and flipped over by a single man for maintenance how does that compare to a commercial fishing vessel? Even if both are wood maintenance is still different. A house boat depending on size could be simply trailered out of the water for maintenance. So the only one that is a real pain in the ass to maintain is the large fishing vessel so how do they compare. And just because you cooked on a boat doesn't mean shit try being the skipper or first mate where actual boating knowledge is needed.
@peterpringle41645 жыл бұрын
FAKE NAME pmsl I am talking about any vessel living in water not on that u can put a trailer take home for another after i grew up on a 32 foot boat learning about the sea from my grandfather who built in and up also serving in Air Sea Rescue for 3 years and also did life saving and basic marine biology native to Australia and watching wankers like ur self who want to be out spoken voice and think u know more than me crawl back in ur shell and stop thinking u can win this cause u may know how to operate a vessel and talk only about boats u take out the water, let’s face it let see ur mate down the road who owns a 52 foot boat place that on his trailer drive it home attached to his ford F100 now go back to ur simple life and stop trying to discriminates my 40 years experience with sea, rivers.

They could have brought it up with a few peaces of plywood a few 2 by4 a couple tarps some sand bags and some rope with one pump. Build a cashion over the hold. Tie it down with the rope .Cover any other openings with plywood and tarp. Then pump out interior. Suddenly it is NOT sunken any more.

Louie Louie my guess is that either they had a pump failure and nobody noticed, or there was some rot in the frame and a few fasteners pulled out, opening up seams to the the point where the pumps couldn’t keep up.

Calm down Richard. The dog provided entertainment for the salvage crew. While they were being paid for coffee breaks they had something to stroke that could be seen on this video series.
