I just saw them play in Santa Cruz w/ Les Claypool and the Frog Brigade. They still have all the urgency and energy that they’ve always had! Angelo Moore was handing out setlists and I finally got to geek out on playing Theremin, showed him my Theremin/pedalboard and it turns out we both played the Moog Etherwave Plus Theremin. So much positivity and sincerity from him. 😊

This band was a huge huge HUGE influence on me, as a young black kid who loved hard rock, this was the first band that rocked out good where the members looked like me. back then the only black people you saw in rock music was the occasional drummer or bassist with a white singer and guitarist up front getting all the love.
@brendagoodman537
@brendagoodman537 9 жыл бұрын
TheMortalez Yep I used to hear this song all the time on Z-Rock and I loved it, it was months before I knew they were black and after finding out i was even more impressed, it could not have been easy for them to get that much radio play back then, but they were just that fucking good. Sadly I think if they were white or of the vin diesel/jennifer beals variety of black they would have been even more popular. but times are changing thankfully and those things dont matter as much, as evidence by the last time I saw this band in 2009 and the crowd was a bunch of white kids who would have been babies when this video was made.

Hands down the best show I ever saw was Fishbone at First Avenue in Minneapolis. Think it was like 1993. The band (especially Angelo) were absolutely at full throttle giving 150% for a good 90 minutes. It was crazy the way they commanded the audience. The pit went from pure chaos to actual dancing just by playing the next song. Then back to pure chaos. There has never been anyone that can touch their live show.

Show in Edmonton in 93 ... my friends and I were right at the side of the stage where they kept gear cases and stuff. Norwood was walking by to take the stage and sees me smoking a cig. Bums one, goes onstage and starts killing it. A couple songs in he sparks up a spliff, smokes half and tosses me the rest. All while wearing nothing but a towel that's about to fall off. Good times.

Yeah, this song is SICK and Fishbone shoulda been HUGE in 1991 but keep in mind RHCP was an underground band back then. And so were Soundgarden, Nirvana... the list goes on and on. Only us "freaks" listened to these groups in an era when Warrant, Whitesnake, and Poison were still chart toppers. But all that stopped in October of that year. By June of 1992 everybody was singing ""Give It Away," spandex was dead, and Chris Cornell was a household name but Fishbone never got the recognition they deserved.

Fishbone - Sunless Saturday I see the pestilence outside my window I see the dung heaps piled at least a mile high I see the shards of shattered dreams in the street I face the morning with my customary sigh Whoa-oh-oh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! I hear the sounds of children laughing aloud A stumbling wino has attracted quite a crowd My breakfast finished now I brave the outside But clouds have hidden all the warmth inside Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Freedom come (Freedom come) For us now . (For us now) Light our sky (Light our sky) Burn away These clouds Yeah! Perhaps the charcoal grey and brown around me Is just the mirror image of tainted soul I think the sun will never visit my sky Until the truth is seen by each and every eye Whoa-oh-oh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Freedom come (Freedom come) For us now . (For us now) Light our sky (Light our sky) Burn away These clouds I see the helpless and I see the insane I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain I see the means of help elude us again I think the sun will never visit me again Whoa-oh-oh! Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. Stoked to get the album when it came out. Some really cool tracks it blew me away when the final track hit my ears. Still gives me chills. It picks you up and moves you. What an amazing work of art.

But every time a good black guitar rock band comes along someone has to mention something about "color". So that alone makes their race a thing to you. I can't imagine you making that comment about color on a Tom Petty video or a Pearl Jam video.

They were SO blazing a trail in this wonderful, powerful and mysterious direction. Either nobody could or would follow them. Damn! Music would have been so much better TODAY if they had. What a missed opportunity for all of us because nobody else had the guts. Very popular with white kids and all but unknown to black kids which is a switch because customarily it is black kids who are in the vanguard. I liked Prince and really liked Living Color but I LOVED Fishbone.

This band was a huge huge HUGE influence on me, as a young black kid who loved hard rock, this was the first band that rocked out good where the members looked like me. back then the only black people you saw in rock music was the occasional drummer or bassist with a white singer and guitarist up front getting all the love.

This song is not political; it's not racial. The reason this song is great is that it's about depression, plain and simple. We can be depressed for different reasons, but it's part of the universal human condition. *Liked*

Well you made it racial, because i don't see comments on Aerosmith or Nirvana's video having to state: "This song is not racial or political". You just made a "thing" about a black band making a song that isn't about race or politics. But you know they have plenty of songs about those subjects.
