I bought a 1976 Fisher 30 Northeaster motorsailer from north of Norway. It needs lots of TLC.
However it seems like the boat is leaking a lot from the joining between the deck and the hull. And also from almost every screw or bolt on the boat. So the interior is severely damaged. So the boat must be cleaned out in order to prepare for the fix.
In this video i highlight the problem with the leaks and the aftermath of years of leaking fresh water into the interior of the boat. Demolition-work starts.
This video might be of interest for anyone buying an old boat to be restored, and in particular for present and future Fisher owners.
I hope you like the video. There are more of them to come as works progress.

Helge 2 years later I am watching this again...as a NorthEaster has come up that needs love...so figured I better see what happens when they've really gone wrong.

Ohh! Have you got a Northeaster on your hands? Will you buy it? I guess you will find a lot of documentation in these videos. One of the problems is when the joining between the hull and the deck/superstructure cracks up. Then it leaks all the way...

Your films on the Northeaster are an inspiration, but also a very valuable warning to people who see an elderly, still charming boat, and tell themselves it can't be too much work. Huge credit to you for your perseverance. I believe she'll be better than new when you've finished.

Great start! 8 yrs ago I purchased a "hurt puppy" F34 in Canada ... and we've completely refitted/restored the boat. Its worth the work! They're wonderful hulls ... and, when you are finished, you'll have a beauty! Having all the interior and systems done will add a lot to your confidence and enjoyment of the boat to be sure. "Slow is fast" ... don't get discouraged with the hard stuff! All the best!

@@hsobstad I look forward to the progress ... by the way .... do check the through hull fittings ... the older ones look solid but (given age) are somewhat brittle. I had the original 1977 sea strainer for the engine ... and when I took it out, it was noticeably "dezinced" (losing bronze stability). I've systematically replaced all the through-hulls over time. By the way ... Sweden? Finland?

@@thomasrose7262 All through hull fittings are planned to be changed, yes. And possibly also the shaft-tube (just possibly, since it is connected to an offer-anode via copper-cables), and will check the propeller-shaft. Strange noises from the cutlass bearing when running the engine (after a while) indicates it worn-out. Norway.

Window/port Rebedding and new gaskets is a job that gets done on all fishers, but the hull deck joint problem is extreme...as is the total profusion of leaks and joinery damage. Best to photograph all wood work before you rip it out, and save as much as you can for templates or to re-use.

My plan is to re-do the interior quite completely and think outside the box while doing so. I dont need 6 berths, only 2. So I will make them large and comfy. 🙂

It is a lot of work. The end result will be very well worth the effort. And there are many levels of finish to choose from.

WOW! --- Back in the day I SO wanted one of these boats (or a Fisher 31 Motor sailor) but couldn't afford either. Now, later in life, I have the money but am no longer fit enough. Life can be so cruel. I'll be following your progress and wondering, 'what if?' ----

Hi Martin. You miss out on all the problems and work, connected to buying and owning an old boat like this. Sad to read. I very much see what you mean, with a aking back, that has a partially prolapse and wear that will not improve - but on the opposite will get worse. Knowing that I must act now on dreams while they are still obtainable. One must play with the cards one have on hands, at all times. Find something fun you still can do, and watch my videos for all the problems you dont have to deal with. Thanks Martin. :-)

The engine looks good and fires up no problem. As for the rest you'll be able to fit it out exactly how you like, also I'd just get her water tight and sailing, then I'd just build the interior as I go. That would be what I'd do, I'd get her sailing and worry about the fit out as I'm using her.

Yes, Fred. And way more work then I initially thought (and I thought it were to be a lot). Did a lot of work this summer (see the later videos). I very much agree with you about these boats being beautiful. There are really something about the lines, sturdiness and something....very nautical.

Well, there's good news and plenty of not-so-terrific news! 😢 But this 'ere's the deal! Once you have rebuilt the flamin' boat properly in the way it should have been built in the first flamin' place you'll own the best flamin' boat in the marina! Because the basic design is a damn good one! It just suffers a bit from the common American practice of shortcutting work practices to get the job done quickly and often to a lesser guality than we would expect. Fun days ahead for you guys!

Yes. Much more than you see in this video (watch a couple of the latter videos - more trouble). And more trouble will come (engine) in a later video. Still love the boat though... ;-)

Your are absolutely right. Removing everything gives possibilities for new solutions. This far north makes insulation a great idea. :-)

The real problem with through deck leaks from improperly bedded hardware is the damage to the balsa core which will require the deck skin being removed and the core replaced from above and then epoxying it back together and painting with Awl Grip and then re-bedding everything by drilling an oversized hole, filling it with epoxy thickened with colloidal silica and then drilling the proper smaller diameter hole for the fastener and bedding the hardware in fresh Sikkaflex. A massively laborious, expensive and life shortening job. Now you know why the two happiest days of a Skipper's life are the day he buys his boat and the day he sells it.

I concure with all of that. There is actually balsa core in this boat. Surprisingly it seems to be in decent condition (not everywhere). And none of the deck and cabin roof are soft. Also a good sign. Having owned several "projects" I have no excuses when "issues" pops up ;-)

@@hsobstad engine sounds good. Quick start. Good compression. Quiet running. Should change all fluids and new fuel ,air and water filters. Check fuel tank for water egress. Racor fuel water filter will help .. water will destroy fuel injector tip and raiise heck with the high pressure injection pump, which is a very pricey item engine water temp should be 180 195. Oil should be approximately 60 cold and no less than 25 running at temperature. Engine log will record serial model number and all consumable parts. Service information. Cheers. Ps. ?

@@vicnadurak724 Engine is a low-reving 2018 model with less than 200 hours. Have just changed the turbo due to missing siphon-valve. Thanks for info. I think all is check. Will make a video within reasonably time now....

The opening between hull and deck could be seen on the first film you aires on YT. Actually I didn't understand why your overlooked it.

Yeees...! How did I miss the stuck turbo or the rot in the structural members? And more to it... Due to lots of dirt and stuff left on the boat I guess.... I am still happy with the boat, but it builds up to a big project :-)

I think freezeing of leaked water had done damage I don't see in my California Fisher 30 (1973). The stupid vinyl liner makes it impossible to see inside the hollow bulwarks, to locate and stop leaks. It was removed from my boat and I would NEVER put it back !

Are you going to pull and re-bed all those teak bulwark top boards? I can't wait to see that, it's one job I've managed to avoid so far. Everything else you showed mirrors what I've been through on my 46 year old 25. The pleasures of boating!

Yes, that is the plan. As of now all the teak is removed and the prep for fibreglassing is progressing. Really unpleasant work, grinding gelcoat and fibreglass ;-)

its a good boat,, i,d say an honest boat you can tell by just looking over it that its a wreck ,it not been an idiot that slapped paint everywhere to hide and pretend its something that it is not

You are right about that. The seller was actually very kind and insisted I should see the boat (he sent it to me) before I payed. I did´nt have the heart to hold back a penny, so I ended up paying him all of the agreed amount, even though the boat was worse than advertised. Keeps me happy. :-)

@@hsobstad i,d be happy too ,fisher is well built to last you got what you wanted a project you can be happy when its all finished knowing you done it covered every inch of the boat and there will good sailing not worrying if this breaks or that leaks i was looking at a fisher 25 seaward no pilot house just went for a smaller lighter boat that i could trailer around lots of those fishers in france they love them

Well I have started my little journey of catching up with your full story of the Fisher, so I am around a year behind. My overall impression ranges from ‘not too bad’ to ‘well what can you expect for the age of the boat’ to ‘well at least you have a good collection of templates’ (as you removed stuff from the boat)😉. Clearly you have quite a list of jobs to progress just to get this vessel weathertight and it looks like that capping rail needs to be removed for rebedding (not going to list everything else here) - I wonder if the Fisher had a ‘parking bump’ to lift or break the capping bedding and those fractures around the clearwaters? Whereabouts are you? Great stuff and a worthwhile job. It’s just like eating an elephant - one bite at a time.

Thanks, Norman for all your kind comments. Yes this boat has had more than one parking-bump, and also being berthed without proper fenders. I am in Bergen, Norway. I am motivated to complete this journey. I will do my own angle on much of the interior, since the old one was ruined and also made to fit "all", with 6 berths. I will mostly sail on my own. My wife is not keen... :-)

Thats a pain its such a pity that these things all seem to time out at the same time. I hope 🥺 you get 🍀 and can get some help. Do you think the hoisting in slings squeezed the hull and lifted the decking.?

Hi Clive. The boat, beeing 47 years old, I guess this is within what one can expect. I do not think hoisting the boat with slings has had any impact on these leaks. I think this is only the old putty drying out. So I will need to remove the teak railings and fibreglass the hull and deck together. That should last, if done correctly. A lot of work, but necessary before any serious interior rebuilt is commenced. 🙂

That, Keith, is quite normal for all boaters, spending a lot, getting the boat ship-shape. Then selling, to get a bigger boat (and bigger problems). Good for you that you still have yours. Many people envy us for having Fishers. :-)

Thanks for asking. The boat is due for splashing next week. Has been a lot of work done on the boats exterior plastic-surfaces, both below and above water. I will mix a video within mid October, maybe before ;-)

Hi, Ted. It sure looks like it. The boat was situated in the north of Norway and it was difficult for me to get there. Also these boats are quite rare to find for sale, at least in Norway. So I had to rely on the information I got from a very likeable seller, he even sent me the boat prior to payment. I guess he was´nt a technical boatman as the condition was way worse than he described. But in my heart I knew that. The fine thing about things that are already ruined is I dont feel bad about removing it, which opens up the possibility for a really custom interior. So yes, Ted, maybe I was a bit drunk by being in love with a wrech. :-)
