Whitby Wreck and Reef Fishing

Whitby Wreck and Reef Fishing

Жыл бұрын

The last dates in the diary to get booked are the Spring Tides.
I made this video to demonstrate that you can still have some great sport on the Spring Tides. It's all about controlling the tackle.
The fish are still there, but you have to co troll the tackle properly to get consistent bites.

Great memories Jeffrey…..My father-in-law always tells me about the day in the 70’s they had from Whitby, when they caught so many fish, they had to come in early, as the boat was overladen. His biggest Cod was 35lb that day. Homemade perks, Scarborough reels and one piece whopper droppers. How times have changed…. 👍

I love to see catch and release, yes if they’re large enough for the plate then of course keep them for eating but give the younger ones a chance to grow, there are guys who, can I say not from these shores, who keep anything they catch and either throw them back dead but just don’t let them mature, good post

Andy, first time I’ve watched your channel, thoroughly enjoyed this very informative video, and such a pleasure to find a fishing channel with a calm, collected and genuinely knowledgeable presenter. I like your comment at the end about this video relating pretty much exclusively to Whitby, particularly with regard to drift speeds. I fish off Littlehampton (small private boat) and even on a short tide, 1.5 knots is quite normal. On spring tides (our tidal range is roughly from 4m neaps to 6.5m springs), even 25 miles off, drift speeds can be 2.5knots plus. We still catch on the wrecks (no cod down here any more 🙁) but any wind, with or against the tide, makes it very hard, lines run away so far, especially in deep water. I look forward to enjoying more of your work! Tight lines.
@whitbywreckandreeffishing
@whitbywreckandreeffishing Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the kind words Tony. 2.5 knots through a wreck is pretty rapid, but I’m sure it’s second nature to you, as you do it all the time. I’m not sure I’d like to try it with 10 anglers on board though!! 😂 Best Rey, Andy

Thanks for the feedback. Different baits and rigs seem to work better in different areas. I always say to use what you're confident in. But if you go to an area that you haven't fished much before, don't try and reinvent the wheel.The local knowledge is usually. best. 👍

@@Ukmongoose3 Hi UKmongoose3 thanks for message of support. I good skipper like Andy Id always go out with repeatedly and bad run charter boats I don't go on again. I never take to many fish and always if I am taking a fish hit it on the head. I absolutely hate cruelty on charter boats I've had to say to people in the past like rescently on a boat fishing for tope. 100s of mackeral immature haddock whiting Pollock coal fishing left flapping about and left in a bucket in the sun all went to waste. Good fishing you feel good afterwards this I felt horrible after witnessing this.

I keep the engine running all day whilst fishing. When we drift the rough ground at Whitby, the depth of water is 50m, so the engine makes no discernible difference. If drifting close inside in 8 Fathom or less, it would be advantageous to drift silently. Regards, Andy

Hi Paul. Nobody can really answer that question. They swim off and that’s that. If the fish are of a decent size, I will take them and give them away. Can’t take undersized though. It’s a shame they’re not a bit more robust like Congers.

Hi Dave. For the bait fishing I use a Saltiga 35 and a Saltiga 20 for Shad fishing. To be fair, the 20 size Saltiga is fine for both applications, as I t has 12kg of drag. The 35 is also good for fishing for bigger fish. Regards, Andy

Is a 4.7 to 5.0 a good tide for wreck or will it be a mix bag wreck an rough
@whitbywreckandreeffishing
@whitbywreckandreeffishing Жыл бұрын
@@nathanmcintosh2527you can’t just say yes or no based on tide height. It would depend on the strength and direction of the wind, how far out you are going to fish and the times of tides. I’ve fished the wrecks all day before on 4.7-4.9m but that isn’t always possible. You also have to factor in angler ability. Not a simple, straightforward answer.

Do the tides stay the same roughly each year ?
@whitbywreckandreeffishing
@whitbywreckandreeffishing Жыл бұрын
The tidal range stays roughly the same Bryan and all the tides are driven mainly by the orbiting position of the sun and moon. Tides change in height - low water and high water vary throughout the month. The tides build up to a maximum and fall to a minimum twice a month. The tides with the biggest difference between high and low water are called springs and those with the smallest are called neaps. Spring tides happen just after every full and new moon, when the sun, moon and earth are in line with each other. Neap tides occur when the moon is in the first or third quarter - when the sun, earth and moon form a right angle. The regular motion of the sun, moon and earth cause spring tides to occur roughly 36 to 48 hours after the full or new moon. Not all spring tides are the same size. Springs nearest the equinoxes (21 March and 21 September) are slightly bigger.

I'm not sure how you can claim the catch numbers are "pathetic" if you don't really fish at Whitby very often. The fishing isn't the same as it was 40 years ago, but I don't suppose it is in most places; things change. Most of the "Freezer Fillers" don't bother any more, but the real anglers still come and enjoy a day out. To coin an old phrase.....It's fishing, not catching. Regards Andy

@@whitbywreckandreeffishing I follow the fish reports from anglers and whitby based boats , It's not a dig at the industry or whitby it's just a fact the catches are pathetic to what they were. Let's not forget those freezer fillers back in the eighties were feeding their families. You have a business to run and it's not an easy one , all the best to you .
