In this episode, I have one last day in Panama City before I head back to the States, but I'm not done fishing yet. My local friends Melvin and Joel are taking me to a special spot on the Panama Canal, one of the greatest feats of human engineering, on a mission to get me my first tarpon. These are some of the most challenging fish to land in the world, which I know all too well after losing every one of the fourteen tarpon I've hooked in my life so far.
And to add to the challenge, we'll be dodging saltwater crocs and the authorities along the way.

I know that area very well. Didn't look anything like that 30 years ago. There are a few of those inlets, and I think this one is the one that leads to Curundu. That area used to be known as Diablo Heights. The Crocks there get very big. We used to troll up closer to the locks for Corvina and red snapper too. Cool video.

This video brought back some serious feelings. :) I was born and raised in Panama on the Atlantic side and lived there from 1980-1995. Most of tarpon season coincided with school summer vacation, and a buddy and I would fish for them several nights per week on the Chagres River. We had a 19’ Jon boat with bow/stern anchors, set up in the middle of the river. We’d drop a float light in the water to attract minnows, which would attract baitfish that ran in a circle under the boat. We would drop a weighted line of metal hoops down into the circle and the bait fish would run themselves into the hoops. We’d catch a couple dozen to last the night and each have two poles in the water until sunrise. Four to six tarpon was good night along with 10-12 jack, snapper and snook. We would sell them at the local fish market on the way home each morning. Best summer “job” I ever had. My PR for tarpon was 162lbs and my buddy landed a 176lber the summer we moved stateside. Didn’t know what a fishing license or game warden was until I was 16 years old. :)

@@YakFishField Didn't expect that, thought you would have answered the question, or at least made reasonable attempt at an excuse. Disappointing to say the least.
