@@ebfloors As I have said in the video, there isn't one single good spot out on the Vedder. That spot was very congested this weekend, and probably on most weekdays too.

Always enjoy your videos. I used to fish coho with spinners but the Chum were so thick we would lose so many spinners on the backs of Chum. So we started fishing with a med heavy bass rod and we would take the hook point off so it was quite dull so as not to snag the Chums backs now we could cast right into a bunch of Chum and the Coho would be under the Chum and you could see them using them for cover so as long as you could get a few rotations of your blade A Coho would dart out and grab.Thats when the bass rod helped set that dull hook into the Cohos mouth and we stopped losing $5 spinners

Just caught 2 cohos on Dec 2 before the pouring rains these days, cohos are still fresh ( tiny red but still silver fresh ) before the fishing spot of Tamihi !!

There isn't a particular water level I am looking for, but rather whether it is rising or dropping, and the clarity of the water. If water is clear enough, and on the drop, you should be able to find fish somewhere regardless how high or low it is.

Yeah it has dropped back to somewhat low again which makes fishing challenging for sure, but I would say not as tough as earlier on because fishing pressure has gone down quite a bit. Coho fishing should be good for at least a couple more weeks.

Beautiful looking coho😊🎣 I have a question, I noticed that you don’t seem to use a snap swivel to quickly change spinners and spoons. Is there a reason for that?

I do sometimes but I prefer not to have that many parts hanging from my spoon or spinner. To me it just seems to cause more issues when you have more swivelsc etc on the line when you get a big fish on.

I just picked up some Prime Lure spinners. I can't wait to try them. Donyou recommend size 5 over size 4? Also, what weight Prime Lure spoon do you recommend? Thanks for your informative videos. I appreciate it.

I use their size 4 spinners. If there size 3 I'd just use those too. For spoons I use 2/5oz. I tend to use smaller lures than others. For slow and especially shallower water I want my presentation to be smaller.

I use an improved Albright knot to connect my braided main to the fluorocarbon leader.

@@ahmedb4316 I think that unfortunately is just trial and error, and over time you would lose less and less. After almost 30 years of spoon fishing, I am still losing lures from time to time lol.

hello,, i was just wondering as a new angler how i could/should go about finding new fishing spots? i tried asking pacific rivers and they gave me a really good spot that's not to hard to get to but i want to find more spots.

You walk and find them, that's pretty much the best advice I could give you. You're not going to know the river unless you don't walk it.

Any tips for avoiding the chum salmon now that they are in decent numbers in the Vedder for coho. Is shallower and slower-moving water a safe bet?

There really is no way around it but to just move and find places where chum salmon do not dominate the area.

My main line is 15lb PowerPro braided, and I tie a section (around 4ft) of Seaguar fluorocarbon (15lb STS) to the end of it before the lure.

I always have a swivel with the spinner (just about all spinners you buy would come with one). Without the swivel, your line (especially mono and fluoro) would be really twisted after awhile.

The likelihood of seeing a bear around where I was is pretty small. In twenty+ years, that has only happened once. A little further upstream, bear sightings are more common.

I noticed in Alaska most of the bear spray was from us tourists. The locals seemed ok with the bears. Fat salmon bears are not going to eat us.

I follow the hydrologic graphs religiously, but knowing the water clarity is just a guess. The first bump on the graph you show reportedly had brown water. I took a chance and drove out from N. Van on the 19th and water clarity was good 2-3' even as it was rising to the third peak. If they also measured turbidity it would remove a lot of guesswork (tough day for me as I went 0 for 4 bites!)

Yeah unfortunately turbidity will always be a guessing game, and that river surprises us every now and then. I was surprised how nice the water is yesterday morning even know level was higher than the day before. Freezing level/air temperature would be another factor influencing it beside precipitation.

Our grandfather always had us reeling left unless lefthanded.....just makes sense and it made transitioning to a flyrod very easy

@@FishingwithRod when I'm trolling for kokanee I like to have flyrods with opposite reeling....that way I always have the rod to the inside of the boat so the reel hand close to the water can net....get better leverage as well

I switched all my stuff to right handed just to be difficult too! I'm fairly ambidextrous, golf right, swing a bat on my right but play hockey on my left side. For me, I like to cast on my right and I'm more right handed than left, I don't need my smart side holding the rod. I fish solo a lot and netting with my right is the way, everything and everyone else just has to live with that it😊

That would depend on what you are targeting of course. I use a 2500 for coho salmon.

It was a big chinook salmon foul hooked on the back, way too big for me to bring in on the light coho salmon setup.

Love to fish in the rain. Some, ( a lot ) of my best days have been in the rain. Im sure it's because the barometric pressure is dropping. Or so I've been told.

Oh for sure, coho salmon tend to bite, especially lures, better when baraometric pressure and temperature drop.

Okay normally I love your videos an never have anything to criticize, but i hurt after watching you point your rod at the fish on your first hookup. Probably wouldn't have broken off and or would have had a harder time running if you had kept your rod out to the side allowing it to bend and do its job as a buffer for the line between your hook and reel 😅

That's how you need to do it when your gear and line are completely overpowered or you'll risk snapping the rod before the line.

The very first fish you hooked, ran down river an you just pointed your rod at it the hole time. As to littlegoobie stating that's how you prevent snapping your rod, 1 if your rod can snap under 5 pounds of load don't use 5 pound or heavier line as you'll snap your rod, DUH. Note I'm using 5 pound as a reference. If your going for bigger fish bring a bigger rod and line smaller fish smaller rod and like he stated he was under geared from the start so my question I guess is, why on earth would you rig your tippet/leader/bumper what ever you want to call it, why would you make your breaking point stronger than your rod. Seems pretty stupid to me... bring the right tool for the job or don't try to do a job your incapable of finishing 😂😂😂

James, I think you are confusing the second fish with the first fish. The first fish I hooked in the video was a coho and it popped off right away. The second fish I hooked was a chinook salmon, on its dorsal. There was no way for me to turn that fish around with what I was using.

Hmm, you are supposed to care a lot for theese fish so why do you use sardinegear when you might hook a chinook and leave ur lure in them? Losing gear in big fish because people use way too light gear is plain stupid in my opinion and no i am not very happy to see it from you of all people....

Hmm, you're obviously not a salmon fisherman. It's far better for the fish to leave the spinner in its back than to play the fish to exhaustion to pull the spinner out. Guaranteed that fish will live and spawn with l the lure in it, but it probably won't if you try and reel that fish in backwards.

You dont know much about catch and release do you mr PRO, when done right the survival rate is 95-98% measured by tons of radio tagged fish of all sorts in sea and fresh water....before you even TRY to argue read up on catch and release and watch a couple videoes about it too.. @@deej9367
