Rod, in one of Kitty's float fishing videos I had asked how to prevent the bobber stop from getting stuck in the rod guides. Just wanted to thank you for your advise to use the string style bobber stops because it has worked beautifully. Thanks for the videos!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mustafa, these float stoppers are not ideal for getting onto the spool, particularly the baitcasters because they’re too big to go through the rollers etc. If you’re going to set your float that deep, it’s better to tie your own float stoppers by using thick braided line. I’ll try to do a tutorial on that soon. Thanks for watching the videos on both channels! 🙂

Good setup Rod, does all round and if you hook a big tank you got the back bone to work with. For the float stops you can also add a bead to prevent the stoppers from getting damaged and sometimes slipping inside the float. Another thing you can try is adding a single stopper above the sliding weight, I don't know if you have noticed but sometimes when you fish deep areas, the weight will slide up the line and when it comes down the line giving a false "down" or "bonk" to the float.

Hi Rod, Great video. Two follow up questions. What type of swivel do you use ie crane barrel? My second question what is the shortest rod you would use for the baitcaiting rod ie 9 foot?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
I personally use a barrel swivel. No particular reason, just personal preference I think. I usually go with a size 10, or 12. For drift/float fishing, the shortest rods I use are 9'. They work just as well as the longer rods most of the time. The disadvantage comes in when you're fishing in a much wider run where you need to pick up more of your line between the rod and the float.

I just got a baitcasting reel and having trouble casting with a few bird nests that take a while to untangle and leave me frustrated. Wondering if you can do a video tutorial on casting with a baitcasting vs what I learnt with a spinning reel.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kailey! Yep I will add that to the to-do video list for sure. There definitely is a learning curve on casting the baitcasting reel. I think my first suggestion is to try casting with slightly heavier weight than you would normally use, which makes it easier. Tighten up the tension of the free spool a bit when casting with the heavier weight, then gradually lower the weight and loosen the tension, and learn how to use your thumb to control how fast that spool is turning when casting. They key is to stop the free spooling when your weight hit the ground/water to prevent the birdnest.

For Kings in the river, I will stick with my SAMR1265C its a 10'6" rated 10-40 lb line, power is heavy, action moderate. My 5th Loomis rod. $375.00. From sm brook trout to steelhead, halibut, saltwater salmon mooching & now floatfishing, crankbaits, superbaits. I love these rods. Pricey but worth it - they really are like surgical instruments. You really do feel the difference. My saltwater mooching rod - when mooching on the bottom with frozen anchovie on a 6 oz banana weight - you can feel the salmon tail slap the bait b4 they take it & run - no joke. With braid these rods are like eyes in the water.

Excellent choices Jim. I also have quite a few G.Loomis rods from the lighter 6-12lb setups for coho to the heavier ones you mentioned. They are at a higher price point, but what an enjoyment they bring when catching fish on those rods....

@FishingwithRod

One option you do have for both is a 9' long baitcasting rod and a low profile baitcasting reel. It's long enough for float fishing in most situations, and short enough for casting and retrieving lures comfortably. I used to do this pretty often.

@@FishingwithRod any rod recommendations strong enough to handle chinook?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Yep, check out Shimano Clarus CSC90H2D, 9' long baitcasting rod, rated 10-20lb. That's more than enough for chinook salmon, and can be used for both float and casting lures. My only suggestion is to not get a huge baitcasting reel to go with it, otherwise it'd be too heavy to cast lures all day with.

Have u fished smaller fast moving rivers such as the Cap. I lose at least a hook an hour on the rocks and submerged wood. It’s urggghh. Do u adjust this setup at all. Where are those nice stoppers found?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
I don't fish fast moving sections of the river, there just isn't any point. Those aren't holding waters, fish are constantly moving through and you're basically attempting to hook one by accident. I would look for holding waters instead. Those float stoppers are available at all fishing tackle stores. Highwater Tackle in North Van, Pacific Angler in Vancouver should all have them.
@tommycodfish
@tommycodfish 3 жыл бұрын
I always use center pin reels however never tried bait casting reels. How is it fighting a fish on those bait casting reel in regards to using it’s drag? Also fighting a chinook has to put more pressure on your arm using a bait casting reel doesn’t it? Egg loop knot is great for skein at least that is what I call it. Great info and maybe I will try that setup some day. Happy fishing.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
Both reels are fun, but it really comes down to personal preference. I use both but I do find myself using the baitcasting reels more often. Mostly because it is a lot more efficient, and I have issues with my finger joints so I find the handles a lot easier on the baitcaster etc. One great thing about the centerpin is when river current is slow to absent, it allows you to drift more freely and naturally, something the baitcaster would never be able to achieve regardless how good the free spooling is.

@@FishingwithRod Thanks for the reply Rod. Thanks for what you do.
@jimsomerville3924
@jimsomerville3924 3 жыл бұрын
With a baitcaster you can set the drag relatively loose and use your thumb on the spool as a drag. That way you have instant variability by applying more or less thumb pressure- for example if you need to try and stop a fish, or let it run. Baitcasters are by far the best reels for fighting fish, IMO.

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, the medium heavy model (TNC106MH2A) is rated 12-25lb, which is fine if you are only targeting chinook salmon with it but it'd be a pretty beefy rod for coho or even chum salmon. I already find the medium one (TNC106M2A) in this video pretty heavy and can handle just about everyhing I hook (here in Southwestern BC). Have you asked the stores to see if they can bring in the medium model?

Rod, It was from your other video I had to zoom in on the sliding weight to go look for it at Cabela’s, Bass Pro and Canadian Tire; couldn’t find it. At Berry’s Bait, staff said they were out of stock and the weight typically very popular in the states. So was wondering If I was to look for it on Amazon, what’s the name of that type of weight and what size of that weight I should buy?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
The amount of weight you use depends on the size of the float. The bigger the float is, the more weight you add. You want to add enough so only the top coloured part of the floats sits above the water surface. You can use whatever style of weights you want actually, as long as they’re streamlined and don’t affect the drift.

Awesome video! Can't wait to get out there this October! I have a few questions about your setup 1) what do you think of the cigar floats where the line wraps around the float? 2) how do you adjust the float depth when you have that many float stoppers on? 3) I sometimes use a buzz bomb bumper instead of a bead to protect the knot from the weight. I thought the bead would transfer the impact whereas the bumper absorbs the shock. What do you think of that?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Adam! I personally don’t like to wrap line around the float because eventually the line will cut into the foam. It’s easy to adjust the depth just by moving those float stoppers one at a time (it’s actually a lot less time consuming than it sounds). The rubber bumpers would totally work too! Good idea. With the beads, they do shatter at times from impact after awhile.

Hey Rod! I’m looking to find a float fishing setup that I can use for all types of BC salmon. I know it’ll probs be a heavier set up as chum and chinook can grow quite big. What are your thoughts on a 10’6 Shimano Convergence medium-heavy 12-25lbs with a baitcasting reel. What are your thoughts on this rod paired with something like a kastking royal legend or abu Garcia black max baitcasting reel. Would something like this be ohkay for targeting several types of salmon ranging from coho to chinook? I know you like to use smaller and lighter rods for your coho fishing but I don’t have the funds right now to buy another rod strictly for coho. What are your thoughts on this rod and reel setup for general salmon float fishing and what kind of mainline/leader would you run. Thanks again for your time! I appreciate all you do for us new fishermen! Cheers- Paul

It’s cause I was gifted that brand new convergence (don’t want it to go to waste) and I was wondering if I could roll with that rod for the meantime to float fish the various species of salmon, then buy a lighter rod like the clarus down the road haha
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
ah ok. the 12-25lb test is fine for whatever drifting you wish to do, even for coho salmon, but you'll find it quite heavy/tiring to use over time compared to lets say a rod that's rated 8-12, 8-17 or 10-20lb. The 10-20lb like this one in the video is adequate enough to handle most chinook salmon, and still light enough for coho salmon.

@@DR-nu3jo You certainly can float fish with a 9'6" spinning rod. Does it do a good job? No. There really isn't a good spinning substitute for baitcasting or centerpin setups if you want to float fish. You'd be dealing with constantly trying to leave your bail open and let enough line out so you can create a smooth drift, you'd end up with too much loose line and the hooksets would not be great. Give it a try. If it doesn't work, then you'd have a good rod for spoons and spinners.

Usually that would concern me if I have the bead on its own especially for lake fishing, but in this case I'm not too worried because 1) there is a good chunk of weight sitting on top of the bead, 2) the bait is always drifting a little ahead of the weight/bead down the run, so the bait is always what the fish see first.
