The Menu is a 2022 American black comedy horror film directed by Mark Mylod, written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy,
Premise: Young couple Margot and Tyler travel to a remote island to eat at Hawthorne, an exclusive restaurant run by celebrity chef Julian Slowik, who has prepared a lavish molecular gastronomy menu where food is treated as conceptual art, but his approach to cuisine has some shocking surprises for the wealthy guests.

The funniest scene for me is when all the women are eating the "men's folly" dish and they are all praising the food (specially the ummeboshi) and then the assistant character tries to join and she says "it's the emoji for me" and all of the other women quickly correct her and say "ummeboshi". I laughed a lot at the moment.

I think horror comedies are getting better from this movie. It's my favorite genre. I definitely noticed the sarcasm right away within each joke. I love artistic food, so this excited me because of that. I do feel like it became over shadowed as the customers started complaining about certain dishes. I was also confused by the concept personally. So, I extra appreciate this break down. Different aspects were understandable. But, it'll still take awhile to digest lol. I do agree the movie was sad in away. I thought the chef was terribly cringy at first. Then I started to feel bad for him. I'm late! 😂😂😘 But still. Thanks for the review. 😘

I think them not mentioning the staff was intentional. The rich constantly look over service workers and in the movie the rich aren't given what they want. In a sense we as Americans are considered so much more rich compared to some nations so we as the viewer we would be considered the rich much like the absence of bread we do no get to know the service workers stories because we weren't paying attention to them anyways. In any other movie we may have been given backstory, but not this one because we don't deserve it. We were too focused on Chef

I absolutely loved this film. The trailer made it look like a "The Most Dangerous Game" scenario and I'm so glad they didn't give it away. From the lead performances to the ensemble cast, the sound design, shot composition and message the movie had to say... It was just chef's kiss 👨‍🍳💋. This movie hit especially hard having been in food service over 10 years myself, it just spoke to well to the burnout service staff get, the entitlement of guests and it did it all with humor and suspense aplenty. Easily gonna make my top 10 for this year

After watching The Menu and Avatar 2 in a span of two weeks, I personally enjoying watching The Menu (Not having the running time of over 3 hours helps). Ralph Fiennes hinted that the guests could have escaped if they banded together, but IMHO he was just planning mind games with the guests, because I remember seeing 3 beefy guys armed with knives guarding the door and that doesn't include the people working in the kitchen, who all also had access to sharp knives to control the guests. I thought The Menu was a Top 10 movie for 2022, in my opinion. And I also agree with you guys that if the ending was a bit better, this movie could have been truly epic!!

I agree with you, one of the very few criticisms I have is I also was waiting for some of the background of the staff members and why they were literally a cult devoted til death. I think the staff themselves were so keen of going on with chief is because they themselves are feed up with extreme work and conditions they have to do. I'm just guessing but its likely they hardly get days off, On a island and sleeping together so hardly any contact with friends and family. Not enough rest. Not to mention the customers were most likely not as friendly or at least said thank you. All this builds up. The staff probably thoughts is a high end place If I work there its gonna be worth it with amazing pay and benefits also wonderful work environment. Only to realized its not , they had to be heavily focused to obsession levels and all banned together in a suicide mission.

I am here for "cheeky-ironic horror" if a category exists, lol..the cast line up was fantastic, in my useless opinion. Also whomever cut the trailer did a good job. Are the chef's staff, more liken to "talented food cult members" loyal to him or his following? My favorite part to see will be forcing the "foodie" to cook a dish resulting in absolute humiliation.....obnoxious "faux" foodies are a pet peeve of mine 😑. Like whyyyyyyyyy?? Foam is not food, gastric is BS...one scallop topped with some rare strip of sautéed organic leek or some truffle that grows only on the northeast side of a mountain inhabited by goats that piss on it to give a "unique" flavor is NOT A DELICIOUS MEAL so why express the orgasmic over performance at each bite? I read another comment that mentioned she was like the head chefs prostitute/ assistant. The connection being she said “nobody can be in there besides the head chef” and she was already inside when the other girl sneaks in. Also she had the key to the head chefs secret room which had a bed inside of it too. And she said “she wasn’t going to be replaced” during the fight. She probably knew this girl was a prostitute and that the head chef liked her, or showed some favor to her. (The head chef also tried to have sex with that other sous chef)

I was thinking the same thing for 1250 and how it was cheap. But then I realized that they say In the movie you have to bring a plus one. So that’s 2500, which for 12 people alone for one night is 30k.

They had to bring a plus one, but there were 12 guests total. So $1,250 × 12 = $15,000

Just saw this tonight and loved the concept and execution (😉) but I did think it was going to have a bit more humor because of the tone of the trailer. Was expecting more camp but still really enjoyed it especially Hong, Ana, and Nick and it definitely had some ha moments. I liked being served 🧑‍🍳 all the different puzzle pieces about why the guests were chosen. I like this movie the way it is but I like the idea so much that I almost wish there was another version that was just as diabolical but had less Hannibal Lector vibes and more Hans Gruber or Landa's malicious charm.

I got hung up in the cheap price, too. When he said $1250 a person, I thought it should have been $12,500 a night. I’m not rich at all. But, I have been to fancy restaurants where bills easily racked up to over $500 for 3 people, w/ drinks. I liked this movie!

Where did you get the idea that he despises his mother? I didn't get that AT ALL. He doesn't hurt her. She's a drunk and he was a neglected child but the ire was saved for his father who was violent towards her. That he was violent in front of her suggests that they are both immune to violence because of his childhood.

I saw this last night. It was good and very unique to me. I would right off the staff so willing as being part of cult. I believe the few staff members tearing up before they die such as "the mess" as him fulfilling his role in life/ the chef's presentation

hearing your synopsis reinforces my meta theory about the island as the earth and her leaving early is how humans cope with the overall use of the planet. the original speech is very garden "do not eat-" and he starts them off in a place where they could literally all decide to become a commune, a literal garden of eden and two restaurants (the expansion home) with living quarters (and the staff could have a restaurant and they could have one.) but because they are all passive none of them truly escape the minor intimidation and brutality that they suffer in their lives.

There is no backstory or reason given that they would willingly commit mass suicide. The fact you have questions means the movie failed.

So the staff willingly killing themselves together with the chef at the end. Is that suppose to be some sort of symbolism on the service industry?

I mean, they live crammed in an island, all look and act and dress the same, and obsessively work like robots. One killed himself just because the chef told him how he messed his life, not hard to see that the other staff are the same. All very cult like. Not hard to see tons of symbolisms
