FishTales DIY: An even better kayak kart for next to nothing $$$

Slight modification of a previous version this one is made from an old lawn mowers axle and wheels with PVC pipe I had around the house. I custom fit this kart to my OldTown Loon 111 kayak but the design can be modified to fit most any kayak. Everything with me is a work in progress so I'm open to suggestions to make improvements in the future..

"One man's junk is another man's treasure", is what I always say. I had a sot but now have a sink. The cart I made for my sot does not work well for my sink. I was looking at other peoples designs just yesterday. Lo and behold my youtube subscription email showed up and sure enough Mr. Tedrick built one for me to copy. hah Thanks much and Happy New Year.

That is so neat if you have some blue or black spray paint to paint the pvc it will look real good nice job.

First, I'd like to compliment you on your taste in Kayaks. I have a Loon 160T tandem, myself. Being that you are so handy and I need one of these, I wonder if you'd permit me to give you some business? The only suggestion I have is to use bigger wheels when available, but you did bang-up job with yours. I really enjoyed your video.

I made one last modification to the new kart so that it has a handle/lock like the original square design and painted it flat black..

I do believe your onto something here, William. I have several commercial yak carts that I've just never been in love with, I may just scavenge them out and hit the plumbing department.

I see how guys struggle with those commercial rigs and I want none of that.. It would be better to make this kayak kart out of steel conduit pipe if I just had a way to custom bend it to the contours of the yak..

William B Tedrick My big problem is that I'd like to have something that works on multiple yaks and also one that breaks down for taking along with me. (Guess I'm not a trusting enough soul.) Personally and professionally (as a mechanical engineer), I think the schd 40 PVC is a good material for the task at hand. Cheap, strong enough, easy to work with. That said, if you want to bend metal conduit, all you need to do is fill the pipe full of sand first. This keeps the pipe from kinking as you (slowly) apply pressure to bend it. A "peg" jig can be made by driving a series of heavy lag bolts partially into a 2x12 or work bench. ( You can sometimes borrow a portable conduit bender from the home goods store for free too.. Heck, I've bent conduit right in the store to save time:-) ) Takes a little patience but not that hard to work with once you understand it.

Thanks for the video. I bought a new kayak and my DIY scupper cart doesn't fit. I'm going to try something similar to your design so it will fit both kayaks, but I'll probably just add a rope or strap to hold from the opposite end to keep the cart from sliding. I don't think it will slide much anyway given the angle it's sitting at.
