Fitting an armrest into a Smart 451

A fit & fumble guide to installing an armrest into a Smart 451.
Was pointed to this guide on an American website, can't remember which one so I'm sharing it out from my cloud storage.

Hope this helps someone to take the plunge with doing their own bits and bobs.
Original part, A4519701601, supplied by Mercedes Benz of Newcastle at a very reasonable price and very quickly delivered.
Have since discovered that there is one to fit on the driver's seat but I don't know what the part number is.

Had the same problem as you so took the opportunity to film my less than perfect attempts. Glad you liked it but keep an eye out for that last clip, I think it is supposed to hold the plastic cover on to the casting but as I had already locked the armrest into the bracket I couldn't bothered to remove it again and it's fine since the day I installed it. thanks for the video, got my armrest today and installed in 30min. I thought and read somewhere in a forum that there is more to it and need to remove som upholstery clips but it was very easy, no need to drill holes in the seat if you have left hand drive, just push the upholstery with one hand, insert the armrest holder, tighten 3 screw, cross cut foam and upholstery and you done. good invested 98EUR as I was missing the armrest and did not know what to do with my right arm :)

Glad you like the video but maybe if I had bought the right hand drive armrest I too may have found the holes were predrilled.

Recently made a bit of an alarming discovery if you use the LHD armrest in a RHD car. When you lower the passenger seat to extend the load area you suddenly discover the hand brake lever is virtually impossible to operate single handed! I think the next time I do that I will wind the armrest up to its highest angle and hope that helps but being a clever sod I didn't think of that until several days later. DOH! again.

Yes I discovered that little gem about two weeks ago, DOH! Mind you, there's not much space between the seats in a Smartie so it's not going to make much difference to me.

Did you ever figure out what that small part was for?? I also installed, as you instructed, and also was left with that small cotter pin/picture hanger like piece? Thanks.

Stephen Olin no I never did find out what to do with that bit but nothing has broken or fallen off yet so either I've been lucky or it's just there to confuse simple sods like me. Hope the video helped and enjoy your armrest 😄

Well, the PDF shows that clip to be inserted at the top of the bolted on flange after the plastic cover is installed, followed by the spring; then inserting the arm rest. I too installed without this clip! And, have had no issues. Thanks. Steve

Thanks for a great video...I really really would like an arm rest in my Smart Prime(2015)model,which has leather seats...could it still be done?? any idea where I could get it done..where I could buy it from?.this is a mans world!!! and I don't have one of those..Haha!.....Thanks again

Hi. What year is your smart. My one is 2008 convertible with leather seats and apparently the armrest would not fit. Do you know your armrest part number? Cheers.

Hello Piotr, mine is also a 2008 convertible and the part number I used is A4519701601 but that is for a LHD model. At the time I did this I wasn't aware that there was a version for RHD models so don't know what the part number for that is but you might be able to find out from a Mercedes dealer. Good luck.

widewalt Thanks I spoke with Mercedes already and they said that part no. A4519701701 with is RHD equivalent of your one will not fit 2008 model. I personally hope that they don’t know what they talking about because I really like to have the armrest in my smart. I guess I will have to try myself. Regards Peter.

@@AmeliaWhite-qv7ns Hi yes the one I have mention earlier it’s the correct part number for RHD car and as you can expect genuine part to be - fits perfectly 👍
