Should seal the frame before fitting it. Also seal the end grain on the bottom of door and cut out for the lock, helps minimise the door swelling up and binding. It is always those areas that start to catch.

Lovely job Ben. Glad I'm not the only one who still uses a chisel to chop out the pockets in the frame. Seen guys free handing it, but on those expensive, hardwood doors and casings, well, I'd hate to miss!

Nice installation very carefully executed. I was interested to see how stable the TREND door foot was when you were working on the door. I have 15 doors to install and have usually just clamped one end in the workmate. Would you recommend the trend

Hi mate. Thank you for watching. The trend door holders are really good. You need to fiddle with them a bit to get the width correct to start with but once that is right they are super sturdy. Perfect for a big door job like your one

Very new to this type of DIY as my day job is in the IT world. Love your videos. The only thing more I would like to see is when you use screws an fixings would be a quick shot/explanation of what you are using. For example, what you used to screw the frame to the brickwork?

I would have used 6mm self cutting screws into 7mm brown wall plugs, to screw the frame to the brickwork. 5mm are a bit too flimsy and can snap easy. My favourite are Screwfix Turbogold but there are stronger self cutting screws. Nice suspenders and tool pouches!

Hi Ben, just watched your TV unit build. Great seeing what can be achieved using a track saw, possibly the biggest game changer in the industry. I think you're tapping into an area that most people are interested in. Carpentry in the home is where I think the most interest is. Lots of KZfaqrs doing bits of everything, but not many doing round the house jobs. And remember that not everyone watching is a chippy, but they're easily influenced by being able to watch the process from materials to product. Other than Robin Clevett, not many people covering your content. Best of luck, I've subscribed 🤗 I'm not safety Police, but for your own sake get some protection on your mince pies🕶️👓😎 Jed

Hi Ben, iv just subscribed. Lovely demo of Robins hinge jig. My wife ordered one for me as a surprise which arrived yesterday. Only she didn't know Rob makes two versions. We got the 3 inch version but Robin has very kindly offered to send me a complamentry 4 inch one. What a service. I was queries to see that you prefer to install the hinge on the door before the frame. I usually do it the other way round, I also usually prefer to avoid the mid rail when installing the lock. Great video

That's a different door that you've hung as you hinged the first one the wrong hand? Unless you've planed the hinges out and started again? Use a one piece trend jig much quicker and easier to use, in all my years hanging doors I've never seen anyone use a single hinge jig it's too much messing around.

Nice job but personally I prefer to pre-assemble the frame,hang the door and pre-treat the frame and the door all around pre-installation. This is to ensure that the item's are truly sealed all round as off the shelf doors and frames are utter rubbish these days and don't last. The doors are either veenered chipboard or laminated softwood with a veneer on, complete crap. I suspect that the underside of that cill will never see a finish applied and will undoubtebly soak up the moisture hence any manufacture warranty on the door or frame void.
@BuiltByBen-YT
@BuiltByBen-YT 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, We all do it differently mate, based on the circumstances of the job in hand. I make decisions based on the project I am working on and the decisions I make are different every time. The end product is the most important bit and if that is correct it doesn't matter how you get there! If you watch closely there is a DPC under the cill and the cill itself sits 20mm off the brickwork anyway. This is a also a very dry area with astro turf instead of grass so no moisture is held for very long. Hope that explains it a bit better for you. Cheers for watching!

Nice video. Genuine question, why do you not use the cross string line method on installing the door frame? The existing brickwork can be ‘twisted’ and you dont want the frame replicating that. Biggest question though is, as a joiner of nearly forty years in the U.K., being as you are working outside, how come it wasnt raining???
@BuiltByBen-YT
@BuiltByBen-YT 2 жыл бұрын
I maybe trust the brickie too much 🤣 I do run my eye down it before any installation just to see if anything suspicious and if there is anything slight you can usually knock it a few mm on the screws. The sun was just a bit of luck I think 🤔

You can do it how you want really. I usually prefer to lift up to top because there isn't a brilliant way to cover the top without making it look disproportionate. Whereas at the bottom you can hide it all. The floor level wasn't a problem on this occasion
