Fitting An M52 Engine Into A BMW E30 [E36 24v M50 Swap] 047
In this E30 build episode, we reach an exciting milestone and finally get the M52 24v engine swap fitted.
Wezmoto Braided Clutch Line for RHD E30: ebay.us/yJ7IBQ
@CondorSpeedShop M50/M52/S52 Engine Mounts: www.condorspeedshop.com/produ...
Getting this motor fitted has been a very long time coming, and it couldn't have gone better really.
I start out the episode by fitting the clutch slave cylinder to the Getrag 240 gearbox along with a new Wezmoto braided line. Following that I fit the starter motor which is just two torx bolts. Its important to use an M20 flywheel compatible starter from an E30.
After this I moved on to more engine fitting related tasks, in particular fitting the engine arms back onto the M5X engine and getting them torqued up to spec. By good luck, the engine arms you need for an M52 engine conversion for an E30 are the same ones as found in a BMW E36 328i, so the engine arms I use with my M52B28 are actually original to it.
I managed to get a set of E28 engine mounts free with some other parts, but these are an old-school way to do the swap on the cheap. I was tempted to have a go with them but from reading online you will end up with the E28 rubber engine mounts failing prematurely simply because the angle of the subframe mounting point and the engine arms are not compatible with it, putting it under a lot more stress than it was designed for.
Further to this, these engine mounts make an M50 or M52 engine sit particularly low in an E30, adding to the problem of hitting the sump on speed humps.
I opted to import a set of polyurethane engine mounts made specifically for M50 M52 S52 engine swaps made by Condor Speedshop.
The quality of the Condor engine mounts seems to be very high. After a quick test fit on the subframe, I hung them loosely from the engine mounts as per the instructions.
With the engine and gearbox suspended on an engine crane via some heavy-duty straps (seatbelts), we shuffled the E30 into a better position and got it lifted up on blocks.
With that done, it was time for my E30 removable front core support mod to come in clutch. I unbolted it and set the core support aside. At this point, the M52 engine was staring its new home in the E30's engine bay directly in the face.
With some shuffling back and forth with the old man, and even some use of a trolley jack to raise the gearbox to align the engine mounts better, we managed to get the Condor engine mounts located on the subframe and tightened up to spec.
Fitting the 24v M52 engine into an E30 was surprisingly easy thanks to all of the work done leading up to this point. Putting this 6-pot engine in was actually far easier than removing the old M40 4-pot was. Mostly thanks to that removable core support!
With the engine mounts buttoned up, I crawled underneath the car to add the gearbox supports. Luckily on an E30 the gearbox mounting studs are adjustable, but captive in a slider. With these moved, I could simply tighten up the gearbox support in place.
With this done, I could bolt my front core support back on and drop the car back down onto its feet to admire our achievement. Who'd have thought 24v swapping an E30 could be so easy!?
Sadly there are a lot more fiddly parts to figure out yet, including the wiring for an engine swap, the exhaust, the intake, and even silly things like the prop shaft and gear selector. But that's all to come.

Wow. The engine is in !! Some thing troubled me on the condor mounts, think its the wrong side installed cos the engine arms should sit fully on top, not offset Currently can see the engine tilted more to right. The oil cap should be flat horizontally. I could be wrong, so best to check it again. The removal front panel is best so far for any front repairs.. 😊

Thank you Felix! And thanks for pointing that out, I thought exactly the same at first, really strange that the engine arm looks like it's not centred on the engine mount when it should be. 🤔 I triple-checked it against Condor's information and it has to be right, the mounts are on the correct sides and there's only one way to bolt them down. I might get in touch with them just to get full confirmation on that. And yes, the front core support was a godsend to say the least. Hopefully, I won't need to remove it too often in the future. 😆

Thanks Steve! The custom sump looks like it's only marginally lower than the subframe which I'm pleased about really. I'm not planning to absolutely slam the car, so speed humps shouldn't be a big issue for me with this. The sump plug position is looking a bit questionable currently, but I'll hopefully address whether that's an issue in the near future. The engine shims sound interesting, were they for use with E28 engine mounts to correct the angle on them?
@Flordeh
@Flordeh 8 ай бұрын
@@SPANNERRASH The custom sump is definitely the way to go mine is lower than the subframe. I have Ireland engineering sport/race Springs up-front so I can't run too low. As for speed bumps I try to stagger approach the two tires, also find turning tires lift the car tad. The sump plug position looks okay it's on the low side and doing an oil change we usually lift the front. I found the E28 engine mounts not to work with the transmission mount looking part on them. Think I ended up using either M20 or M50 to be able to space them up with a angled shim, like the condor engine mounts provide. You also have another layer on top of your subframe for a bit of height. So you should be golden. The exhaust collector subframe clearance will be something you'll find out soon.
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 8 ай бұрын
@@Flordeh Dang sounds like a constant worry with that sump then, I'm glad I'm avoiding that. Knowing my luck I'd be absent minded and crack it on the first hump I saw. 😂 I might be fretting about oil starvation instead though. But from reading its unlikely, and I plan to monitor oil pressure somehow for peace of mind on that front. I'm impressed with the angled shim idea. I hadn't thought of that at all but I can totally see how it could be a good solution to the uneven pressure the bushings would take otherwise. Exhaust is something I'll be tackling very soon so stay tuned for that. 😁
@Flordeh
@Flordeh 8 ай бұрын
@@SPANNERRASH 😉 It hasn't made contact yet but a 1/8 inch aluminum skid plate and rubber mat stips between to cover the oil pan should help. Thinking back the right side motor mount was shimed for M52 stock header and collector pipe to work. For mid pipe and muffler I found a stock S52 M3 setup for close pipe size and sound. I've always liked that quality clean factory look of the stock M3 stainless tips. Eisenmann sport would be a muffler I'd put on next👌

you should get gearbox bushings / mounts with the same hardness as the engiene mounts. with stiff engine mounts and soft trans mounts you wil strain the gearbox bolts in the engiene as the gearbox would want to twist alot and the engine wont twist with it during hard acceleration/decel :) or the engine mounts will take up all the strain and wear prematurley
@SPANNERRASH

Thats a very interesting concept, it makes good sense. To be honest I'd made a conscious decision not to change the gearbox mounts to Poly because I don't really want transmission noises passing into the cab. If I could have selected softer Condor mounts I would have too. 😄 Now you've said that I will make a note to revisit the gearbox mounts in the future. Cheers!

Awesome, I hope the video proves helpful for you. It's very similar to installing an M52B28 into an E36 chassis. The front core support is removable on an E36 very easily. I think there are two spot welds to cut and a couple of bolts to remove. Then it would be almost identical.

Hi that sounds like an unpleasant problem, have you got the correct oil in the diff? Its quite possible its just worn out, maybe run with low oil for a long time, and the crown wheel and pinion are now not meshing well. To be honest I'm no expert on this. Maybe someone else can chime in who is more knowledgeable. If it were me, I'd consider swapping it out. As its an open diff it wouldn't be too expensive to change for a known good one of the same type.
