Fitting lights to the TTS Sound Class 37 / 97

Pretty much as the title of the video suggests, feel free to follow this tutorial on how to fit an Express Models lighting kit to the Hornby TTS Sound Class 37/97. The loco was sent in by my friend Dan who loved the model's diesel sounds but was less than impressed with the lack of lighting. A short stay at Crewe Works rectified this without too much trouble.

I recognise the ambience of the offshore rig from Tomb Raider 2 in the background of this video. That was a good addition, so it sounds like a works.

Hey Simon! Great channel and great videos! Would it be okay to share your channel on social media and maybe as part of a video too? Love what you do and keep it up! Good point on the wiring too - it can be quite stressful - definitely a good idea to start with a few tester models first haha

For Crewe Works. Well made tutorial. Am ordering a DC version of the lights, for a Lima class 37 from the same supplier. This is an option I never expected for old Lima engines. Alan.

Great informative video.....showing every detail.....giving me the confidence to have a go myself... Would like to see a video on soldering and heat shrink in detail if you can recommend one... eg.how to solder such small wires ..prevention of damage to other parts ..heat shrinking etc

Very interesting and informative- I'm glad that all of my HO have the required lighting but not DCC (expensive) and my N scale, well you get the picture (too difficult), they all the head/ditch/tail lights and some interior lighting that I put in the coaches, but no sound. Nice going there Craig, and you too - camera man Will ;)

Nice video, I am just working on my conversion at the moment. I have not read all the comments but it is wise after making any alterations to your loco or decoder to see if you can still read the loco address on your programming track prior prior to attempting to power up the loco on your main track. If you cannot read it then it is likely your wiring is wrong. If you place it on the main track having been unable to read the address on the progamming track then you will probably blow your decoder. Done that, got the T shirt.

Hallo Will (and Craig) great to see the works again. These are quite useful vids so please do more when possible. It appears that blacking the inside front slightly darkens the outside paintscheme, though may not notice when body is back on chassis

I should think the process would be almost identical. I bet inside the models it's a very similar set-up.

did the lights work in the right direction with the motor ? I had trouble with a hornby TTS decoder and an express models lighting kit . the lights being in the opposite direction to the the motor. so I had the tail light on when going forward

They did indeed work in the correct direction. If you have found the wrong ones are lighting up depending on the direction it's going in, it will be down to wiring. It could either be wiring you have done or wiring on the lighting kit - but swapping the wires over where they've been twisted together will sort it. If you need any further help, let me know!

InterCity82 thanks for the offer but I got so frustrated with the model I sold it on eBay. I was asking as I might have another go with a different TTS model. It will be good to be able to get the TTS decoders as a separate item to upgrade your old locos

1: paint the sides of the leds to avoid light bleed, 2: cab lights are warm white not yellow/orange

Great tutorial, only thing missing for me was a close-up of the soldering of the wires onto the chip on the chassis. I find soldering tricky, so this would help me at least.

Nick Russell I found soldering difficult too until I got a demonstration at school. Once you practice, it becomes dead easy.

Thanks for the feedback. The next time I do a video featuring soldering, I'll be sure to focus on the soldering. A lot of it is down to practice and confidence. Start with basic jobs first and then move on to more technical ones. Just play, basically! :)

Thanks very much for this video, Followed your instructions and it worked, except the direction of the lights were the wrong way so just swapped the wires over, All ok. I am really pleased with my 37 now and I think this same kit might fit the horny TTS sound 47class so will probably try it. Thanks again. Really Useful Video . Ted

IC82! there's a game online called TrainStation its on a website called Pixel Federation its free to make an account you can use you google account and you start in the steam age and progress to the diesel age and so on its really cool i think you should check it out

Everything's relative really, in the world of models there are much trickier jobs - this tutorial might be quite hard for some people, but then others might think it's baby stuff. In the end, it's just a tutorial on one way of getting lights fitted to this particular model.

Haha well noticed! It's a sound effect of an industrial warehouse/workshop. In silence I felt the video lacked a bit of atmosphere but music seemed a bit... not quite right. So I thought the sound effect was worth a go.

It's just a reflection as the ends are so polished and there were several spot lights lighting up the work area :)

Haha it was just an industrial workshop sound effect. I can try music next time but it's not gonna be possible to please everyone with roughly 1/3 of people saying leave it quiet, 1/3 saying have sound effects and 1/3 saying have music lol lol

If your going to do instructional videos you need to get the info correct so if anyone follows your direction they dont blow anything. BLUE is pos+ and not common "neutral" whatever thats supposed to be.
