Re the window settings, everyone I know on the continent has inward-opening tilt-and-turn windows, and for the ventilation without a fully open window you either use the tilt setting or they have a little push-release stay built into the bottom of the frame to the 'turn' setting. Thoroughly recommend them as a technology, we got Internorm ones, and using a slim surface-mounted fake glazing bar across the middle of our 1900s sized sash openings we got triple-glazed tilt-and-turn aluminium past the heritage officer in our conservation area, which nobody thought we would. At a glance, they have pretty spot-on proportions for the original single-glazed sash windows (there's only one lot of those left on the street now, and I measured every bit of it).

As an amateur I now prefer to have a few cheap measuring tapes around and chuck duff ones, rather than just one expensive special which I can never find. I like Magnuson tapes as they hold themselves extended rather than having to fight the auto spring retraction. Easier for weak n feeble like me with small hands. Double sided, metric and imperial, with magnetic tip of course. Commonly found in the usual stores.

Best tape Bahco MTS525E Auto Tape Reversible Magnetic Tip Stainless steel innards, great quality, durable tape markings and doesn’t fly apart when it looks at water like all the rest. More expensive but had mine nearly two years constant daily use, dropped multiple times from height and it’s found it way into numerous puddle. Still going strong can’t fault it

But there’s a whole world behind that blue membrane ! I wonder: why do the windows open outwards in Great Britain?
@footplate0
@footplate0 Жыл бұрын
To allow ease of access incase of a fire. It's easier to fling a window outwards while jumping or preparing to jump. It also provides a "steady" when your on the sill. You can get windows that open inwards as as well as out and also open on the horizontal axis for ease of cleaning but mainly the windows open out.

@@Clothis64 Your welcome
@asilver2889
@asilver2889 Жыл бұрын
@@footplate0 Not sure about that. Firstly, the difference in time to open out or in is miniscule. Second, no window with a restrictor can be "flung" open. Some designs (most?) need two hands and are fiddly at best to release. But mainly - the escape window is really a rescue window. Climbing out can only be done by strong and able, as last resort. The idea is that you can be rescued into the welcoming arms of a firefighter. In many EU countries it is the norm to have outward opening main doors. No definite reason, but fire safety gets mentioned as a bonus. Inward opening windows allow external shutters. Very popular in Europe. But they do not allow (much) usable indoor window sill for trinkets.

I’m not sure how you can assure an airtight seal with the tape; if it is sticks firmly to the metal frame say then isn’t there a gap between the tape and the timber reveal (unless the gap is slightly thinner than the tape), Conversely, if bonded to the timber then the gap will be between the tape and the window frame? Or is that you are trying to seal any potential ‘air leaks’ from the timber opening into the house? In which case, why stick the tape to the frame before inserting frame?

If you restrict window opening, won't it stop the window being used in event of fire?
@asilver2889
@asilver2889 Жыл бұрын
The restrictors (should) have an unlock mechanism. The ones in my rented house were really fiddly, one each side of top opener, sprung loaded, needing both hands whilst pushing window open with head. I practised a few times as waiting til needed for real not wise! My new place has an easier design but still need to demo to guests - not intuitive.

@darrenwilliams7741 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRestorationCouple would not matter what ventilation you have in the building windows now new and old buildings must have a T/V by law that's if you was getting it signed off to get certass etc certificate but in your case it probably would not matter to much if you're not planning to have it signed off by certass etc, funny as certass say once a T/V is on a window you can no longer call it a energy rating A window🤷
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple Жыл бұрын
Just double checked and not required with the MVHR thankfully as that would undo all the work to create the airtight construction. Like you say, it would effect a regular non ventilated build though. 👍

On daytime TV about a year ago they had the child psychologist boffins all up in arms about Peppa Pig really teaching some proper iffy behaviour setting and teaching by example some behaviour/ empathy levels that are quite destructive to kids senses of right and wrong. You two work hard and would have easily missed this is so I am only saying because I'd want to know. They were really serious about it. Absolutely none of my business respectfully at the same time. Just saying, they made quite the fuss.
@ComeWhatThey
@ComeWhatThey Жыл бұрын
It's because it's a product for worldwide distribution rather than a tool for childhood development. If it contained moral lessons or challenged traditional gender roles at all then there's plenty of countries governments which would object to it being shown. We're used to high quality kids TV in the UK, but with budgets getting slashed there's less and less of that. Although to be honest I really don't think we understand the implications of the media landscape kids grow up in these days, I doubt one show is going to make the difference.

@@ComeWhatThey mmm they gave legit clips as examples and explained , nothing to do with global acceptance. Worth a Google, for the kids' sake for sure. Anyway, do people still trust governments? Not sure. The channel is fascinating thanks for all the lessons and may God bless the West country!!
