Warren McPherson offers Five daily tips to improve your scale practice.
Tip 1: Incorporate daily scale practice into your routine, allocating 10-15 minutes daily.
Tip 2: Group scales by fingering similarity to optimize learning efficiency.
Tip 3: Start with one-hand, one-octave practice; play slowly and evenly to build muscle memory.
Tip 4: Introduce pauses at crossover points in multi-octave scales as practice progresses.
Tip 5: Apply these steps to major, minor, pentatonic, and blues scales for gradual improvement.

Since I started watching your videos a week ago, playing the piano is becoming easier. Your tutorials are so easy to understand, and your speed not too fast for beginners. I really appreciate your good work. Am now on tutorial 6, will catch up soon. And by the way, you are just so handsome. I like your composure.

Merci beaucoup Warren. You helped me a lot especially when you pointed out the difference between a beginner and intermedicate player. So I have stepped back and am working on these fundamentals. I tend to watch more videos while I'm exercising for my shoulder, but my piano practice wasn't on an equal with my video level. I'm working to make sure my fingerings are consistent, so I'll be looking at your other video next. I realize that your videos need to be watched and use them as guides for the next several months.

I enjoy playing scales in different keys in either hand, like B in the right and E in the left. Then play them in different rhythms in each hand. It helps with hand independence as well as really ingraining the fingerings.

Putting in the crossover "speedbumps," especially when playing with both hands, gets me from start to finish but it sure is a painful process at first (figuratively speaking). Hey Warren! I want you to know this! I replay your videos ... a LOT!. It has been a few months since playing this particular video, but I remember these words "... you have to practice how to be anxiety-free...". I heard that after the umpteenth time of replay! On that particular morning, I had this video playing while practicing scales when I had a lightbulb moment about practicing scales slowly. I was trying to speed up and kept getting tripped up! My mantra: "...don't practice anxiety... don't practice anxiety...don't practice anxiety..." Lol! Anyway, thanks again for all you do!
@PianoLessonwithWarren
@PianoLessonwithWarren 5 жыл бұрын
Bonnie Simpson yes, we’ll all do practice anxiety without realizing. It’s also why adults have bad breathing habits. If you watch a baby - they breathe correctly, and sit correctly. B the time that baby become a teenager all that correct breathing and sitting is gone, because they’ve now learn from society how to practice shallow breathing and bad siting - and likewise, trying to do everything too quickly so anxiety start so take hold until it becomes apart of the daily activity.
@bonniesimpson7488

Oh wow! It's funny you mention correct breathing! I've stepped up my deep breathing over the last few months getting more of it in during the course of a day! I am singing more; so I've pulled out notes from my first vocal coach on how to strengthen my diaphragm. I need that to be a daily habit with my practicing. I'm working on it!

Hey, mighty man, can you tell me what type of musical instruments and equipment would you suggest for a musician playing at an intermediate level?
@PianoLessonwithWarren

It’s not so much about your skill level, but rather how much you have to spend on a keyboard. Generally he higher the price the better the sound quality. Check this tutorial on some keyboard reviews I did kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZmFn92ol7_caKs.html

@PianoLessonwithWarren
@PianoLessonwithWarren 7 жыл бұрын
joshua idode this might sound cliche, but...practice, practice, practice. Over time it comes naturally... just like walking down stairs with out looking, because your leg muscle memory knows the distance one step to the other... the same way over time your finger's muscle memory with know the geography of the piano.
@joshuaidode5200
@joshuaidode5200 7 жыл бұрын
Ok. Thanks so much. I will do that. How many hour should one practice per day sir?
@PianoLessonwithWarren
@PianoLessonwithWarren 7 жыл бұрын
joshua idode it's not so much the hours spent, but actually how you spend those hours. Try to have an attainable goal in mind each time you sit down to practice, and try to complete that goal by the end of that practice session. For example, say the goal is to learn F# blue scale today, set aside 15mins where you work only on F# blues for those 15mins. If you have an hour to practice, split the hour into three 20min blocks and focus on three different task where each 20min is spent on one of those task. Also remember to practice everything slowing and calmly... precision is "key"

I have a very important question to ask. What are the benefits of practicing scales besides those technical ones, i mean can i improve my hearing sense, and maybe start playing some nice pieces only by ear. Nice video man, by the way :) (sorry for eventual mistakes, not my native language)
@PianoLessonwithWarren
@PianoLessonwithWarren 7 жыл бұрын
Angeliko studios no problem, thank you for watching. Scale practice helps to improve all the things you mentioned above. Being able to recognize the notes of a key/scales Is critical for improvisation and for when you get into reharmonization... not to mention building dexterity, accuracy and speed. Think of scales as the blocks you'll use to built your "musical house." Can't build a house without the blocks, right? Same way you can't be a fully rounded musician without knowing scales.

@anudevdevarajan6493

Piano Lesson with Warren sir, I have used the term session is only for time separation for each part of the lesson. If we get one hour in a day to practice, as You told in other video, just divide that one hour like 20 minute x 3 interval and practice each assigned day lessons more effectively. sorry for the wrong terms.

sir, I was talking about practicing the major scale. hope now it is clear.
@PianoLessonwithWarren
@PianoLessonwithWarren 7 жыл бұрын
Anudev Devarajan now I understand, that you for the clarification. Say you practice CDE on Monday, then GAB on Tuesday, you can practice F with say Bb and Eb on Wednesday . The idea is to group scales with similar fingers when ever you can... however there will be scales that are not similar, Just go ahead and practice it anyway in another group. As long as you're getting to all 12 scales eventually, that's the most important thing.

Like even u playing like that even its just all white keys u playing .. is there some benefit to it? I mean jus wanna know why and when ppl play inbetween keys like that. I mean I understand that when u have to play black keys with lil fingre or thumb u go forward but thats not the case here... Right? Or its just personal style? 😀
