In part 2, I return to the Kong Han Wuzu Quan Association to learn more from Master Henry Lo. I wanted to find out his thoughts on the history of the style, as well as gain some insights into his experience in full contact fighting.

A teacher that admits to losing sometimes in fights or matches but gains from them is a keeper. The worst ones are those that don’t spar and discourage their students from sparring

Lol yea. I met this other guy who said he forbid his students from touching hands with people outside the school, in case they give away the styles secrets.

Facts, we all lose if we fight enough you lose streets or rings , teacher sounds like a true fighter much respect , as a kid I was too hot headed to compete in the ring but I have plenty of Street experience and you do you learn from a loss takes a while to let it settle for me anyways

Thanks for documenting and sharing this style. I love seeing all the Five Ancestors content and how it is being practiced in different regions. Also great watching the Master's Iron Body conditioning. It would be great to see a summary video with your findings about Five Ancestors after your two trips and a list of the forms that commonly make up Five Ancestors curriculums.

It is worthwhile to get some knowledgeable discussion on the topic of Five Ancestor Fist. Remarkably, I have found that it stands on it’s own regardless of how its concepts are interpreted. It takes some practice to understand no doubt! Good stuff

You can deffinitely use the phoenix eye fist in striking also. Once you understand how to ground yourself in your structure while striking, it is a devastating weapon against the ribcage. Even without really striking, just using it as a spear and moving your structure forward, you can easily crack ribs gravely. I also agree with his use of the phoenix eye. It really changes ground fighting, clinch fighting and in-fighting when the opponent can't feel comfortable leaving your hands alone in fear of receiving terrible body shots. I don't care how strong your muscles are, I'm driving a nail straight to the bone with all my weight behind it. Something is going to give. Sure, you can't use this technique on all parts of the body in a sufficiently effective way as to justify using it. Some parts you just can't use it for. But the ribcage is definitely a target worth conditioning your knuckles for. Great video!

9:51 Yes! That's what I've realized the "phoenix eye" "punch" stuff is for. No one's supposed to punch with it. It's for digging into people's soft spots. There's no aiming involved.

Nice techniques here. Must be very interesting growing up in this kind of environment especially as a martial artist So it's it possible to make some content on drills and sparring in the lineages you've studied, and talk us through what each lineage emphasizes ie safety, speed, weapons and counters

Hi Will - do you know much about tiger-crane combination kung fu? It looks a lot like Five Ancestors, guessing tiger-crane has Five Ancestors in its history. There are a lot of UK clubs training tiger-crane these days ( Fujian White Crane, Tiger Crane Kung Fu, Kung Fu Zone, White Crane Fighting Arts, Nam Yang, White Crane Martial Arts, Southern Crane Kung Fu, White Crane Scotland). They all trace their lineage back to Ang Lian Huat’s club in Singapore, Nam Yang Pugalistic Association. I’d be fascinated to know if people in or around Singapore are still training tiger-crane or if you know anything of it back in China. Thanks - these videos and the channel in general is brilliant!

Thanks for posting that. Love your videos Although I don’t feel he came across ask very effective it’s good to see his prospective and thoughts and how he has competed as most Chinese martial arts don’t as they claim to be too deadly. That’s very good whether you win or lose. Could you do an episode on Choy Lee fut also on the beginnings on Muay Thai or Muay Boran and what Chinese martial arts if any influenced it?

I forgot to comment and ask you about this in the previous episode, how scientific do you think Henry's description of body conditioning actually is? I've heard that shin conditioning is mostly about deadening nerves and not actually hardening bones, and when Henry said that Fujian commoners would bulk up despite poor nutrition is when I got really skeptical. Firstly, it makes me think that Henry is taking self-orientalisation too far because okay, us Chinese have definitely not been a bunch of malnourished masses since the founding of Taizuquan in the freaking Song Dynasty (he's already gone a bit over the top by constantly emphasising traditional and ancient). Secondly... yeah I believe that with a good diet, perhaps a Chinese one with Chinese habits and the practice of Chinese medicine on top of that you can get really tough, but without that I don't believe that for a second! Your body needs to activate its strengthening mechanics YES, but it needs to get its building materials from somewhere!
